TURKINGTON: "WE WILL BOUNCE BACK FROM THE SETBACK"

After a difficult outing at Oulton Park, Team BMW's Colin Turkington is determined to put the past behind him and move on to better times this weekend as the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship heads to Knockhill for Rounds 13, 14 & 15 of the 2021 campaign.

Catch up with the four-time champion in the Q&A below…

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS AHEAD OF KNOCKHILL?

I'm going to Knockhill with less success ballast than I can ever remember. It’s key to exploit this and take advantage of the championship position I’ve found myself in. We’ve seen before with this series how you can play your way back into contention, and this is the script we must aim to follow. It’s certainly not going to be easy, the cars are so evenly matched on lap times this season, but we will bounce back from this setback.

ARE YOU PLANNING A CHANGE IN APPROACH?

I’ve spent years and endless energy fine-tuning my preparation and how I approach a race weekend. I’m always adjusting and trying to improve whether things are going well or not. Setbacks can easily lead to self-doubt so it’s important we focus on our strengths and keep faith in our systems. There are still 18 races to run and that’s a lot of action incoming over the next couple of months!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT KNOCKHILL THAT YOU LOVE SO MUCH?

Knockhill is such a quirky circuit and you are always on the attack! As a driver, you need a lot of confidence in the car and bravery by the bucket load. It’s such a busy time in the car for us, but there’s just something about the intensity of the lap and the intensity of a race that I love. Historically, the BMW has achieved great results here, so I hope we can continue this tradition on Sunday.

As Turkington and Team BMW aim for a change in fortune this weekend, you can follow all the action trackside or at home via ITV's exclusive coverage with Saturday's qualifying session from 1440 at itv.com/btcc and Sunday's programme starting at 1115 over on ITV4.

OULTON PARK RECAP: ROUND 12

SENNA PROCTOR SECURES TRUNCATED RACE THREE VICTORY

BTC Racing’s Senna Proctor eventually took the result that his pace clearly deserved as the Yorkshireman claimed victory in the final Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship encounter at Oulton Park a little under a fortnight ago.

Drama ensued from the outset – as it had throughout the weekend – when the race was red-flagged on the first of two occasions, the latter incident ending the race ahead of schedule.

The first accident involved a pirouetting Ford Focus of Sam Osborne, which had been sent spiralling off-track by another rival, before catching out the likes of Jack Mitchell (Team HARD. with Autobrite Direct), Jade Edwards (PHSC with BTC Racing), Jack Butel (EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com) and several others, who were all involved in subsequent contact.

The restart was no less dramatic – this time it was reigning champion and standings leader Ash Sutton spinning out of the race as he attacked Proctor for the lead. The duo, who are good friends off-track, went side-by-side through turn one before almost inevitable contact sent the #1 car sliding down the order.

Sutton’s race was run as he tried to return when contact with Laser Tools Racing team-mate Carl Boardley finally ended his challenge.

Ironically, Boardley was involved in the accident that brought a high-speed end to proceedings with both him and Toyota Gazoo Racing UK’s Rory Butcher careering into the barrier on lap eight.

When the dust had settled on track it was Proctor winning from Stephen Jelley, the latter having been Team BMW’s brightest light throughout the weekend.

Scotsman Gordon Shedden completed the podium as the Halfords Racing with Cataclean star enjoyed his most promising weekend of the season so far, as did Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat, who secured a top six hat-trick on the day.

Adam Morgan (Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport) and Dan Rowbottom (Halfords Racing with Cataclean) – arguably vying for ‘Driver of the Day’ bragging rights between them – ended the action in fifth and sixth respectively.

Jake Hill (MB Motorsport accelerated by Blue Square) and Colin Turkington (Team BMW) scored solid championship points in seventh and eighth, whilst Tom Chilton (Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport) and Chris Smiley (Ginsters EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com) completed the top ten order.

OULTON PARK RECAP: ROUND 11

BUTCHER BAGS FIRST SUCCESS WITH TOYOTA GAZOO RACING UK

Race two at Oulton Park was another enthralling encounter, as Rory Butcher clinched the first victory since his off-season switch to Toyota Gazoo Racing UK.

It was the seventh career success for Butcher although it looked an unlikely prospect as his Toyota Corolla lined up fourth on the grid, a position that he maintained off the line when the lights went out.

A ballsy move around the outside of Adam Morgan’s Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport BMW at Cascades followed and then the #6 produced a dynamic double as he forcefully made his way past the Halfords Racing with Cataclean duo of Daniel Rowbottom and Gordon Shedden at Island Bend.

Butcher was already pulling clear by the conclusion of the first lap and continued to extend that gap for the full 12-lap duration.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Butcher. “I’ve taken time to adapt to the car and recently we’ve kind of adapted it around my driving style and it just seems to be clicking now! I was sitting on the grid raring to go and knowing that I can make up places and once I got into the lead it was just a case of managing the lead and then on the last couple of laps to bring it home! It just goes to show that when you’ve got the car feeling right for you it can make all the difference. It’s the hard work from all the team that got us to this point.

“The car’s a lot of fun, if I’m honest! There’s nothing worse than not feeling at one with the car and at the moment we’ve really got it in that window. It’s just a lot of fun and you can play around with it more, just how I like to drive. I’m smiling from ear to ear and just looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Rowbottom clinched second despite coming under race-long pressure from Morgan – both drivers expertly taking their second podium of the day.

“When we started that race, I thought that if I could hang on to a top ten finish, we’d be okay,” said Rowbottom. “But we got off the line okay, me and Rory had a bit of a spat in the hairpin on the first lap and that was it. I just had to control the race.”

“Rory left like a rocket ship, he just disappeared,” said Morgan. “Then it was three abreast going into Knickerbrook chicane and I just basically shut my eyes, hoped for the best and somehow we came out in P3! It was really good fun.

“A mega result for everyone at Ciceley Motorsport. That’s three podiums out of three races now so hopefully let’s make it four out of four.”

Jake Hill quietly went about his business to earn an impressive fourth place in the MB Motorsport accelerated by Blue Square Ford, as the Kent driver continues to mount a genuine championship challenge.

Aiden Moffat’s pacy performances continued with fifth for Laser Tools Racing as he fended off fellow countryman Shedden, the latter having been shuffled down the order on the opening lap.

Ash Sutton made stellar progress in the sister Laser Tools Racing Infiniti but he couldn’t make it by Team BMW’s Stephen Jelley. With both Colin Turkington and Tom Oliphant hitting trouble during the day so far, Jelley has emerged as the German marque’s main threat and the multiple race-winner has been driving beautifully at a circuit he really enjoys.

So Jelley held seventh from Sutton, whilst BTC Racing’s Senna Proctor and Ginsters EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com’s Tom Ingram completed the top ten positions.

OULTON PARK RECAP: ROUND 10

DAN ROWBOTTOM DELIGHT WITH MAIDEN BTCC WIN

As the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship heads to Knockhill this weekend, let's refresh our memories on what happened last time out, at Oulton Park...

Halfords Racing with Cataclean scored a fantastic one-two in the opening race in Cheshire as Dan Rowbottom claimed a first career victory ahead of team-mate Gordon Shedden.

The contest came down to a six-lap shootout after the initial bout was red-flagged following heavy contact in an incident involving Tom Oliphant (Team BMW), Chris Smiley (Ginsters EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com) and Rick Parfitt (EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com).

Much of Team Dynamics’ progress was completed in the first segment as Shedden nipped by the BTC Racing Honda of pole-sitter Senna Proctor, whilst Rowbottom nearly flew from fourth to first with his own brilliant start.

The hard work could have been undone, however, when they were made to do it all again following a sizeable shunt on lap seven.

The PMR-run Vauxhall of Jason Plato and Oliphant’s BMW made contact at Lodge corner, which left the latter sprawled across the race track. The Hyundais of both Smiley and Parfitt unfortunately collected the stricken 3 Series and stewards were left with no option but to red flag the race.

Rowbottom made it stick on the restart as he blasted his #32 Honda Civic Type R around the outside of Shedden on the run down to turn one, and he subsequently went on to claim an outstanding maiden BTCC victory.

“It’s a little bit surreal to be honest!” enthused Rowbottom. “I shed a couple of tears, as I’m sure you can see from the in-car camera. It’s fantastic. For Halfords Racing with Cataclean to get a one-two is great, I kind of wanted to get the first as it’s Cataclean’s home circuit and they’ve got a lot of people here today. It’s one ticked off the list, but the list goes on and the work never stops.

“[Shedden] is a bit of a hunter. We had a couple of nips in the rear corner of the car, and I thought ‘oh no he’s here’ but I just managed to collect it all together, pull a bit of a gap and it was just enough at the end. To be honest in the first part of the race before the red flag I couldn’t keep with him. He was too far gone, so that worked out great.

“I think perhaps we were unfairly criticised due to my 2019 performance, so the aim this year was to come in and get top tens and make people realise what we could be here. But to come in and start winning here is fantastic and great for the championship too!”

“The red flag was falling at the wrong time for me but thank goodness everyone’s okay,” responded Shedden. “A one-two for the team is great, Dan’s first win is just fantastic. Now we’ve got to try and keep scoring for the next two races today, so fingers crossed.

“My start felt okay. Starting on the soft tyres but with so much temperature in them was a little bit hit and miss with what it would be. My green flag warmup lap start was terrible, but I thought my start was okay. Dan just made a lightning start like he did in the other one, and that was really race done. It’s just very difficult to overtake especially in the same car around here.

“We have history here, so I was thinking about that. I think obviously your priority is to get both cars home, but you both want to win and are going to make moves. But that was good!”

Adam Morgan got the better of Rory Butcher (Toyota Gazoo Racing UK) and Stephen Jelley (Team BMW) in an eye-catching battle between the trio for the final place on the podium, and the Ciceley Motorsport man will have been further encouraged that he was running the harder of the two Goodyear tyre compounds.

Morgan’s podium follows his win at Brands Hatch last time out as the Lancastrian team continue to make progress with its BMW 330i M Sport.

“I heard [Rowbottom and Shedden] were on the soft tyre and I thought they’d just disappear,” said Morgan. “But I think we kept them honest and were sort of on the pace. Matt Neal will hate it, but I was hoping we were going to have a repeat at the last corner and they’d take each other off. But a mega result for the team. Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport on the podium two races in a row!

“We’ve still got the soft tyre to use, but the BMW carries weight really well, so it makes sense to use it in race two. We’ll get ourselves up at the front again with hopefully another podium and then just take the reverse grid draw as it comes.”

Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat was lively throughout as he claimed sixth, ahead of Plato and MB Motorsport accelerated by Blue Square’s Jake Hill.

Proctor eventually finished ninth, whilst Team HARD. with Autobrite Direct’s Jack Goff completed the top ten.

RIVETT TO SUBSTITUTE FOR NEATE AT KNOCKHILL AND THRUXTON

Four-time Renault Clio Cup champion Paul Rivett will join Motorbase Performance to stand in for Andy Neate at the next two Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship events at Knockhill and Thruxton respectively.

Rivett has been drafted in to pilot the second Racing with Wera & Photon Group Ford Focus for this weekend’s trip north of the border and will stay with the team for the visit to Hampshire on 28/29 August.

Neate continues his recovery after suffering from COVID-19, having previously been forced to withdraw from the recent Oulton Park event after qualifying, and is now targeting a return to full fitness at Croft in September.

Rivett brings a wealth of experience to the team having won four Clio Cup titles (2002, 2004, 2011 and 2018) and made his BTCC debut last season after securing a drive in a TradePriceCars.com Audi S3 for the final rounds at Snetterton and Brands Hatch.

The 42-year-old picked up his maiden points finish with a credible run to 15th in only his fourth race in the championship at his home circuit Brands Hatch.

“I can’t wait to get into such a fantastic car with such a fantastic team,” said Rivett. “After my first experience in a BTCC car last year I have been waiting to get back out in a touring car ever since.

“While it is a great opportunity for me I really hope that Andy is back to full fitness soon.

“I would just like to say a massive thank you to Motorbase and Wayne Eason for making this possible. Dreams can come true.”

Andy will now focus on his recovery in anticipation of his BTCC return next month.

“Sadly, COVID has truly taken a hold of me this past month, and having spent some time in intensive care post-Oulton Park, there is simply no way I can be fit in time for Knockhill or Thruxton,” said Neate.

“I’ll be back for the final four weekends of the BTCC all being well and if things work out ok for me. Until then I’ll be wishing Motorbase luck in my absence. More importantly though, if I can’t make it to the track I’ll be watching Aiden Neate in F4 from my sofa in his next two race weekends.”

TOM OLIPHANT CONTINUING QUEST FOR POINTS

Tom Oliphant was left singing the praises of his West Surrey Racing team and the volunteer marshals in attendance at Oulton Park following the latest rounds of the 2021 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, as the 30-year-old aims to put the weekend behind him and look firmly ahead.

Oliphant had headed to his home event riding a wave of momentum after claiming his first win of the season at Brands Hatch last time out and was keen to put on a show for the bumper trackside crowd.

Qualifying proved to be as competitive as ever with times continuing to tumble throughout the 30-minute session. Despite his best efforts, Oliphant would manage a best time of 1:26.044s, which was good enough for 14th.

Lining up on the seventh row of the grid for the opening contest, the BRDC member was running on the fringe of the top ten when a move from a rival and subsequent contact with his right rear tipped him into a spin.

Sprawled across the track, the Team BMW driver was unfortunately then collected by the Hyundais of Chris Smiley and Rick Parfitt which caused substantial damage to his rear-wheel-drive machine.

Attended to by marshals within seconds of the impact, Oliphant thankfully walked away unscathed from the incident – testament to the build of modern-day touring cars.

With what appeared to be an insurmountable amount of work to fix his stricken car, the reigning Teams’ and Manufacturers/Constructors’ Champions rallied together to repair the damage in time for him to make the grid for the reverse grid encounter, although the #15 machine sadly missed out on the second contest.

Starting what would turn out to be another truncated bout from the back of the grid, the two-time race winner produced an impressive drive to carve his way up the order and finish 14th, netting him a pair of points.

“Coming into the weekend, that wasn’t what I had in mind,” admitted Oliphant. “But given everything that has happened, those two points in race three have never felt better.

“Firstly, I have to say a massive thank you to all of the volunteer marshals and medics. They were at the scene of my incident – and others over the course of the day – within seconds, and were just amazing.

“I’ve also got to say a huge thank you to everyone at West Surrey Racing because they did an incredible job to get me out for race three; I’m still not quite sure how they did it! I had two pretty big hits and was pretty sure I’d be watching that last one from home.

“They’ve built a really solid car and everyone mucked in to get it back to looking pretty much brand new. They showed the real meaning of never giving up and what it means to be part of a team; I’m so proud of them!

“We’re off to Knockhill next so hopefully we will have better luck there. I’ll head there without any ballast so that will be something we can utilise in our quest for a big points haul.”

The Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship heads north of the border to Knockhill next on 14/15 August for Rounds 13, 14 & 15 of the 2021 campaign.

INGRAM ‘REMAINING POSITIVE’ AFTER LUCKLESS OULTON PARK OUTING

Oulton Park – scene of the fourth outing on the 2021 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship calendar – has been likened by some to a rollercoaster ride, and Tom Ingram certainly experienced its highs and lows as he unleashed a scintillating turn-of-speed but was ultimately unrewarded for his stellar efforts.

Arriving at Oulton sitting second in the standings in the UK’s premier motor racing series, Ingram knew he would face an uphill struggle around the undulating Cheshire circuit with 66kg of success ballast aboard his Hyundai i30 Fastback N Performance, but a turbo wastegate issue in qualifying made his task doubly difficult as it consigned him to the rear of the grid for the curtain-raising contest.

Undeterred, the Bucks-born ace put on a display in front of the live ITV4 television cameras and – for the first time in almost two years – a full trackside crowd, as he thrilled fans with his overtaking prowess.

Belying the difficulty of passing at Oulton, the weight he was carrying and the disadvantage of running on the less favourable medium-compound Goodyear rubber, he gained seven spots on the opening lap alone and was on the cusp of the points when the race was red-flagged for an accident halfway through. Unfortunately, with his tyres and brakes by then past their best, he struggled to maintain position at the re-start and wound up a frustrated 19th.

With the ballast removed for race two, Ingram went immediately on the offensive, posting the fastest lap for an extra point as he scythed his way into the top ten by mid-distance. Rapidly zeroing in on a multi-car scrap for fifth in the closing stages, he narrowly ran out of time to launch an attack – the quarter-of-a-second separating him from ninth place at the chequered flag costing him pole position on the partially-reversed grid for race three.

Still, with the benefit of the soft tyres, when the lights went out in the day’s finale, the Ginsters EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com star hooked his Hyundai up beautifully away from the line to climb to sixth within just a handful of corners, before the action was halted due to an accident at the tail-end of the field.

At the re-start, Ingram again made up ground to eighth, and with his chief title rival Ash Sutton – the sole other driver inside the top ten on the grid on the soft rubber – retiring due to contact, a golden opportunity looked to have presented itself to snatch the championship lead, but then the 27-year-old’s Oulton Park curse struck once more...

Having had to jink off-track to avoid the wayward Sutton on the run down the Avenue, Ingram was forced to pit to get grass removed from the radiator of his i30N. Rejoining the fray almost half a minute behind the pack, all that was left to fight for was fastest lap, which he duly delivered, almost four tenths-of-a-second quicker than any of his adversaries could muster.

While it was a weekend of ‘what might have been’ for the two-time BTCC Independents’ Champion, Sutton’s dramas at least meant he only conceded two points at the top of the Drivers’ table, retaining second position heading next to Knockhill in Scotland this weekend (14/15 August). Ginsters EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com occupies fourth spot in the Teams’ classification.

“I don’t quite know what I’ve done to upset Oulton Park, but it clearly doesn’t like me very much as things never go to plan there!” admitted Ingram. “Saturday was obviously a difficult and disappointing day for us; the Ginsters EXCELR8 with TradePriceCars.com guys worked their socks off both during and after qualifying – they’ve got the burns on their arms and legs from the heat to prove it – but it was a herculean task and there just wasn’t enough time to rectify the problem before the end of the session.

“Still, we stayed level-headed and did what we needed to do on race day to claw our way up the order and haul ourselves into the mix. It’s so difficult to make progress with that much ballast on-board, and when you’re starting from the back like we were, you can’t think about the end of the race – your entire focus is on making up places whenever and wherever you can.

“That meant that by the time the re-start came around in race one, I had practically no brakes or tyres left, which combined with the weight made me a sitting duck in the final laps – we were simply in survival mode by that stage.

“With the weight removed, the Hyundai came alive and felt fantastic in races two and three, but it would have been so much nicer to be able to show that pace at the front of the field. After rising to sixth at the start of race three and with virtually no ballast, I felt like we were in a really good place but then, of course, the red flags came out and we had to do it all over again – and we know how that turned out...

“Once I’d set the fastest lap, I backed off to look after the tyres in case there was a safety car that would have allowed us to try to regain some ground, but when it did come it was too late to make much difference and it was immediately followed by a red flag anyway, which kind of summed up our weekend.

“Remaining positive, though, whilst the other drivers have closed in on us in the standings, we are still there, we are still in second position and to achieve fastest lap on both tyre compounds was really encouraging and shows the speed we’ve got in this car.

“Yes, we might very well have been leading the championship now had things gone differently, but by the same token, at least Ash [Sutton] didn’t score many points either so it could definitely have been worse and at the end of the day, it’s important to put all of this into perspective. What happened to us pales into complete insignificance compared to the events at Brands Hatch, and above and beyond anything else, my thoughts go out to everybody affected by that tragedy and the family and friends of the marshal involved.”
