Ingram stars at Silverstone again

Tom Ingram arrived at Silverstone as the most successful driver there in recent years in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship – and a sublime double victory behind the wheel of his Toyota Corolla extended that run in style during the penultimate event of the 2019 season on a landmark weekend for Team Toyota GB with Ginsters.

After featuring up at the sharp end throughout free practice, Ingram made light of the 24kg of success ballast aboard the #80 Corolla to line up fourth on the grid in qualifying amongst the 30 high-calibre contenders, a scant 0.092 seconds shy of pole position.

Despite the extra weight making his car the heaviest amongst the top five, he immediately went on the attack on race day, putting on a stellar show for the hardy spectators braving the distinctly inclement conditions and in front of both a number of Toyota (GB) top brass and the live ITV4 television cameras.

Morning rain meant Ingram’s side of the grid was less grippy at the start of race one, but the Bucks-born ace shrugged off that disadvantage to proceed to third when the lights went out, before muscling his way past three-time champion Matt Neal for second at the end of the opening tour. Immediately pulling away, he rapidly reduced the deficit to double title-holder Jason Plato in the lead, prising the door open going onto lap four and toughing it out along the start/finish straight to boldly seize the initiative.

Effortlessly edging clear as the race progressed, Ingram ultimately took the chequered flag more than four seconds ahead of Plato, prompting his pursuer to admit that he simply ‘didn’t have an answer’ to the Team Toyota GB with Ginsters star’s prodigious pace.

With his success ballast increased to the maximum 54kg for race two, the reigning two-time BTCC Independents’ champion knew he faced a tougher task, but he confidently held sway at the front of the field for the first nine laps until a tag from Plato – as spots of rain began to fall – sent him into a wild sideways slide that he did well to control.

The delay allowed Tom Oliphant past into the lead, but as the rain intensified, Ingram refused to let his namesake get away and following a late safety car intervention to recover a car stuck in the gravel, he immediately pounced on cold slick tyres at the re-start to reclaim the top spot.

Revelling in the challenge on an increasingly greasy and slippery track surface, he was more than a second ahead when the action was red-flagged on safety grounds with four laps left to run, cementing his 13th BTCC career victory, fifth at Silverstone in the last four years and first touring car ‘double’.

From 11th on the partially-reversed grid for race three and carrying maximum ballast once again, the 26-year-old progressed to seventh on the opening lap before a knock from a rival broke the Corolla’s rear suspension toe link, necessitating a pit-stop for repairs and leaving him two laps down. Thereafter, the Toyota man lapped consistently amongst the fastest drivers on the track in evidence of what might have been.

Despite the non-score, Ingram’s earlier results were enough to elevate him to fifth in the Drivers’ standings in the UK’s premier motor racing series, and for the third consecutive year, he will travel to the Brands Hatch season finale on 12/13 October still in the title fight. Team Toyota GB with Ginsters is locked in a tight three-way tussle for seventh in the Teams’ table, as the single-car Speedworks Motorsport-run squad continues to outperform multi-car adversaries.

“What more can you ask for?” said Team Principal Christian Dick. “To take two wins in a single day is just a phenomenal achievement by the whole team – a real milestone for Speedworks Motorsport in the BTCC, and a rarity in the modern era – and we’re all absolutely overjoyed. Better still, both wins were earned entirely on merit. I genuinely couldn’t be prouder of the entire crew – everybody here shares that same relentless, tireless dedication to winning. They just never stop pushing, consistently going above and beyond to generate results.

“We always knew Silverstone would be a good track for us, as it has been in the past – albeit with a different car. Race one was a stunning performance and a commanding victory, and even with a sizeable amount of ballast on-board, Tom looked confident and comfortable throughout.

“He then produced another cracking drive in race two, building up a gap before the rain began to fall and doing a remarkable job to catch the slide when Plato tagged him, which really showcased his supreme car control.

“By the time the safety car peeled back into the pit-lane later on, the rain had worsened, yet Tom didn’t put a wheel out of place. A lot of drivers said afterwards that they were glad the race had been stopped early, but Tom was disappointed it didn’t carry on, which I think speaks volumes. For me, it was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen from him.

“There were a variety of different tyre strategies at play in race three, but we were looking good until the contact and I think we would have come away with another decent points haul. As it was, all we could really aim for was fastest lap, and despite running on maximum ballast again, Tom came very close. Now we’re all immensely fired-up to go and sign off the season in style at Brands Hatch!”

“What a weekend!” said Ingram. “We were optimistic arriving at Silverstone that we would be on the pace – the Toyota Corolla is just insanely good at these fast circuits – and I was very pleased with the performance of the car throughout free practice and qualifying. I was actually disappointed to miss out on pole position, but the weight definitely played a part in that so we weren’t too concerned and I knew we had a good shot at bringing home some silverware from there.

“We had a lot of quick guys around us on the grid for race one in lighter cars, but I was confident we could hold our own and I love conditions like that – you’ve just got to man up and crack on with it, and I got a fair bit of practice at Croft earlier in the year of running on slick tyres on a greasy track! Jason [Plato] is a wily old fox and I knew he wasn’t going to be beaten easily, so to be able to drive up to the back of him and make a move pretty much straightaway was tremendously satisfying.

“The Corolla felt fantastic – superbly balanced and very strong, as it did all weekend – and after taking the lead, I was able to control it almost at will. It was great to keep our winning run going at Silverstone, and then to repeat the result in the next one – in a totally different kind of race – was just incredible.

“Despite losing the lead when Jason hit me, I could see Oliphant wasn’t getting away. With a lighter car, his only real advantage was straight-line speed whereas we still had the edge through the corners, so I knew it wasn’t over and when he ran wide at the re-start after the safety car, I didn’t need any second invitation!

“It’s so difficult to know how hard to push when you are the first one to explore the conditions, but at the same time it was really enjoyable. It was a shame it was red-flagged because I was having fun out there and felt in a good place, so I would have been more than happy to keep going.

“With a lot of high-profile people from Toyota (GB) in attendance at Silverstone, it was super important for us to perform well – and I think it’s fair to say we managed that. Back-to-back wins is a first for us in the BTCC, and full credit must go to the team for such a massive achievement. What a special day!”

BTC Racing maintains title challenge with home podium

The BTC Racing team secured a tenth podium finish of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship season at Silverstone to remain firmly in contention for title honours.

The Brackley-based team headed into its home race looking to build on a solid weekend at Knockhill, where Josh Cook had secured an impressive podium finish and Chris Smiley had battled to three strong points finishes.

Qualifying around the 1.64-mile National circuit saw both Honda Civic Type Rs lapping strongly, with Smiley matching his best qualifying result of the season to secure second on the grid and Cook lining up in P9 despite the additional success ballast on his car.

Although he would slip back to fifth after a slow getaway, Chris wasted little time in battling his way back into the top three when the opening race kicked off, fighting ahead of Tom Oliphant and Matt Neal to run in third.

It was a position he would then hold to the finish ahead of Cook after he made the most of a strong start to jump into the top six on lap one before also passing both Oliphant and Neal.

The pair would maintain their places through the opening laps of the second race before Smiley was forced wide as Oliphant’s BMW tried to come through, dropping him behind Cook on the road.

Smiley would slip back to eighth spot as Cook continued in the top four until contact dropped him back to seventh, with the two Hondas then running together for the remainder of the race.

As rain started to fall, the pair had fought back up to fifth and sixth when worsening conditions saw the race red-flagged.

Race three would prove to be an action-packed affair after further rain arrived at the circuit just as proceedings kicked off.

A fine start from Cook saw him rocket up into second on the opening lap before he battled ahead of Ash Sutton’s Subaru at turn one and he would lead the race until lap 14 when those cars which had pitted for wet tyres finally fought their way to the front.

Despite being on the wrong tyres for the conditions, Cook continued to run inside the top four until contact with Dan Cammish at turn one damaged the rear suspension and forced him into the pits, resulting in him not being classified as a finisher five laps down.

It would also be a tough end to the weekend for Smiley, who was acting as rear-gunner for his team-mate early on before he lost power and was forced to retire.

At the end of the weekend, Cook sits fourth in the overall standings and has extended his lead in the Independents championship to 22 points with 60 still to play for. Smiley meanwhile sits 14th overall and is just a point outside the top six in the Independents title race.

In the Teams’ Championship, BTC Racing now lie an impressive third behind the works Honda and BMW teams, and is just four points off the lead of the Independents Teams’ Championship heading to the season finale at Brands Hatch next month.

“Am I disappointed about race three? Of course I am,” said Smiley. “But I would have been really disappointed without the first two races. We had a good P3 in race one and I think we could have had more from race two had it not been red-flagged as we were strong in those conditions and some of the cars ahead would have slipped back in the rain.

“We’ve made strides forwards with the car, and it’s taken us time to find out how to get the best from it compared to the older Honda. I think we have shown here that we are getting to the sweet spot with it.

“To stick it on the front row and back it up with a podium was good, and I’m looking forward to going to Brands Hatch where hopefully we can be near the front again.”

“We deserved more this weekend and I’m a bit gutted for the guys in the team that we haven’t taken more points from it,” said Cook. “We’ll go to Brands Hatch with a chance of the title, and I wouldn’t want to be one of the three in front of me as it’ll be elbows out as far as I'm concerned. I have nothing to lose, am confident in the team and we’ll see what we can do.”

“It’s great to have secured another podium finish this weekend and once again, both drivers have done a cracking job on track,” said Team Principal Bert Taylor. “We’ve shown good pace across the weekend from the moment we hit the track, and it’s unfortunate that we couldn’t get more from the final race, as it would have strengthened our position in the standings.

“As it is, we still have a chance of the overall title and Josh has extended his lead in the Independent standings going into the season finale, and we’ll be giving our all to secure some silverware at Brands Hatch in a few weeks.”

Double points finish in challenging conditions for Trade Price Cars Racing at Silverstone

Trade Price Cars Racing fought hard on track in tricky conditions to bring both cars home in the points as the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship headed to Silverstone for the ninth event of the year.

The team was hoping to build on a breakthrough event at Knockhill but it would prove to be a much more challenging weekend on track.

On the back of his first win in the series, rising star Jake Hill endured a frustrating qualifying session to end up 22nd on the grid for the opening race – although his best time was just half a second off pole.

Race one saw Hill slowly start to work his way through the field and eventually make his way up to 16th place at the finish, just missing out on securing the final point.

A similar result would then follow in race two, which was red-flagged due to worsening weather conditions, leaving Hill to try and secure some points from the final race of the weekend.

The arrival of more rain as the action kicked off led to a number of drivers electing to pit during an early safety car period to switch to wet tyres, although the 25-year-old elected to stay out on his soft Dunlop rubber.

Having climbed to the fringes of the top ten prior to the safety car coming out, Hill showed impressive speed and car control to work his way through the order despite the conditions worsening, and climbed as high as third at the three quarter point of the race.

Unfortunately, the increasing levels of rain would ultimately favour those who had switched to wets as Hill slipped back to eleventh at the finish, although that was still the best of those drivers to have remained on slick rubber.

Team-mate Mark Blundell was hoping for another solid weekend in the sister Audi S3 and he bounced back well from losing track time in free practice to a mechanical issue to secure 28th on the grid for race one, having lapped within a second of pole.

The former F1 racer went into the opening race in confident mood and had made up three places in the early laps before he was unfortunately forced to retire due to contact with the BMW of Stephen Jelley.

That left Blundell at the back of the grid for the second race of the weekend and he was unable to make up much ground on the opening lap after being forced wide. A solid drive from there on saw him climb up into the top 20 as rain started to fall, before the safety car was deployed to remove a car from the gravel.

With the rain intensifying as the race restarted, Blundell moved up into 18th and was lapping quicker than the cars ahead when the decision was made to red flag proceedings due to the worsening track conditions.

Having lost ground on the opening lap of race three after contact in the challenging conditions, Blundell was one of the drivers who elected to switch to wet weather tyres behind the safety car and rejoined back down in 25th place.

Biding his time as track conditions came to him, he then started to storm through the order, breaking into the top 20 by lap 16 and then moving into the points scoring positions just six laps later.

He would eventually cross the line in 13th place for his best result of the season to date, and his second overall points finish.

“It’s been challenging this weekend and the car didn’t quite perform how we expected it to,” said Hill. “We needed to take a bit of a different direction with things earlier on because when we did that for race three, the car was a lot better.

“Had the rain not come down as heavy as it did, I think we could have had a podium finish as the car felt great in those slippery conditions and I was storming through the field. I think I showed my worth to hang on for as long as I did on the slick tyre, and it was good to be first car home on dry rubber.

“Going into the final weekend of the season, I can still finish inside the top three in the Independent standings, and that has to be the target to cap a strong year on track.”

“We didn’t do it the easy way,” said Bundell. “But I’m really pleased to be able to go away from Silverstone with some more points under my belt and two decent race results.

“It was unfortunate that race day started on a low but there was nothing I could have done to avoid what happened. I could see the cars ahead battling for position and I tried to get the inside line onto the back straight. Jelley then had a moment and came back across into the car as I was going through, which put me out.

“It meant there was work to do in race two and I was happy with the progress we were making after the opening lap. It was a shame for me that they red-flagged it, because I think we could have scored points if it had gone the distance.

“Race three was a challenge in the conditions but I really enjoyed it and it was great to score some points to pay back the team, and also all of my partners for their support – particularly on a weekend when we had a lot of them with us trackside.

“I finally feel like I’m starting to get my head around what needs to be done to extract more from the car, which has been difficult given how different it is to the cars I have raced throughout my career. Hopefully we can now end the year well when we go back to Brands Hatch.”

Advantage Colin Turkington after sensational action at Silverstone

It’s advantage Colin Turkington in the race for the 2019 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship after the Team BMW star got the better of his title rivals on a sensational rain-affected day at Silverstone.

A double win for Tom Ingram around the 1.64-mile National Circuit confirmed the Team Toyota GB with Ginsters star as the fifth and final title contender before the series moves to its season finale at Brands Hatch in two weeks' time.

It’s all still to play for as Turkington leads Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Dan Cammish by 16 points, with BMW Pirtek Racing’s Andrew Jordan a further point in arrears.

BTC Racing’s Josh Cook and Toyota man Ingram also remain within touching distance, as the battle for Britain’s premier motorsport series again goes down to the wire.

There was a fantastic underdog story at Silverstone too, as Jack Goff secured the first ever BTCC victory for Kent-based Team HARD.

The day began with Ingram claiming his third and fourth wins for the new-for-2019 Toyota Corolla, as the 26-year-old reignited his championship challenge.

Ingram snatched the lead away from pole-sitter Jason Plato in the opening race, as the Sterling Insurance with Power Maxed Racing driver continues to search for his first win of the season.

The Vauxhall Astra of Plato dominated the early proceedings in greasy conditions, but the Toyota Corolla of Ingram soon had the double champion in his sights.

Plato and Ingram rubbed paintwork on lap four before last year’s championship runner-up got the job done through Luffield to take the win.

Manufacturer-backed Ingram then doubled up, having reclaimed the lead during a dramatic yet shortened Race 2.

Team Toyota GB with Ginsters’ Ingram led from the outset before contact with Plato’s Vauxhall Astra let the BMW of Tom Oliphant nip by both of them and into first.

Mid-race rain left the field running on slick Dunlop tyres in treacherous conditions, and the safety car was soon called for after the Mercedes A-Class of Adam Morgan spiralled into the gravel and out of the race.

Oliphant’s BMW 3 Series twitched wide on the exit of the first corner at the restart and he was soon shuffled down the order, as Ingram swept into an unassailable lead.

Plato was another who fell away late on, but the same couldn’t be said for the charging title contenders of Turkington and Cammish. Team BMW’s Turkington surged from 14th to second, whilst Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Cammish came from 11th to third.

With the rain worsening every lap, a decision was made to red flag the remainder of the contest.

Goff then grabbed the headlines in a dramatic wet/dry finale at the famous Northamptonshire circuit.

The race commenced in dry conditions but was quickly turned into a very damp occasion as drivers had to choose between the gamble of staying on Dunlop Sport Maxx dry tyres or switching to the Dunlop BluResponse wets.

The likes of Cook and Cammish led the way early on and were seemingly strengthening their title credentials, but that all changed when a safety car was called for after the Honda of Matt Simpson spun into retirement.

A number of drivers then chose to switch to wet tyres during the safety car period, and it proved to be a masterstroke as the conditions worsened considerably.

RCIB Insurance with Fox Transport’s Goff and Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat were the first to surge through the field and it would quickly become a two-way fight for victory. It was either going to be a first for Team HARD or a first ever win for the Infiniti Q50, and the moment of truth came shortly after the duo hit the front.

Moffat, pushing too hard through Copse, slid wide and spun around whilst trying to catch Goff, meaning the latter could comfortably cruise home for victory.

Scotsman Moffat recovered to claim second, whilst Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Matt Neal completed the podium.

When the rain clouds eventually drifted away at Silverstone it was Turkington who had enjoyed the better of the day in terms of the title contenders; 14th second and seventh place finishes wouldn’t normally represent a particularly outstanding weekend for the three time champion, but his points return on a dramatic day saw him extend his advantage over the chasing pack.

BMW still lead the Manufacturers’ standings, whilst Halfords Yuasa Racing top the Teams’ order.

Josh Cook is leading the Independent Drivers’ with Cobra Sport AmD AutoAid/RCIB Insurance holding sway in the Independent Teams’ table. Rory Butcher maintained his lead in the Jack Sears Trophy.

So, the race for one of the most coveted prizes in motor racing will be decided on the final day of the season at Brands Hatch on 12/13 October, where one of Turkington, Cammish, Jordan, Cook or Ingram will be crowned the 2019 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Champion.

Colin Turkington said: "I’ve drank a lot of coffee today! We’ve been through every scenario on the track in terms of tyres. We’ve been fast all weekend. It’s been the most challenging weekend of the season to-date and we’ve come out in good shape. I didn’t give up after race one and I’ve fought back and scored good points. I’m pleased with my performance and I feel like I’m leaving in a good place. The key is going to Brands with a chance and that’s the position I’m in. You only have to watch one race day to see how unpredictable the BTCC is. It’s the pinnacle of UK motorsport. It’s top level touring car racing across the world. When you win this championship, you get the messages through and you realise just how many people are watching around the world. I’ll continue to work harder and I’m going to give it absolutely everything."

Andrew Jordan said: "It’s been a full-on day for the drivers and the guys and girls in the team. To have Colin (Turkington) extend his lead isn’t ideal but we’re still in touch on a day when it could have ended in tears for any of us so we should be happy with that. We’ll go to Brands Hatch ready to fight, recharged and refreshed. If I were stood on the outside, I’d want to see a bit of fire from people and as a spectator, that’s what makes it. You can agree and disagree with views and that’s the way it is. We’re not here to make friends, we’re here to win championships. If emotions boil over or whatever, that’s all part of it. I’ve not really got much to plan. All I’m going to do is go there and drive the car quickly and win some races. I’d love to win it."

Dan Cammish said: "It’s been a really tough weekend for everyone. It was getting desperate out there for a few people and I’m just going about my business. Those laps in those conditions could have been the ones that make the difference, so you have to give it everything. A few things didn’t go my way like the red flag 100 metres before the line, where I would have gained second. It cost me six points. I feel deflated but I’ll pick my head up, drive the wheels off the thing and go for it. It’s not a million miles away, 16 points. If you’d said that in the middle of the season, I wouldn’t have believed you. The team have done great, I’ve been consistent and we’ve put up a fight. The BMW is the fastest thing out there when it’s like for like – they’ve done a fantastic job. They’re still scrabbling around though, trying to get the job done. I’ll keep hanging in there and make myself a nuisance."

Josh Cook said: "The gap’s 36 points, which is frustrating but leaves me with a bit of an outside chance. I’ll be getting my elbows out like everybody else has this weekend. My eyes are solely on the Drivers’ standings at the minute. I know the team are keeping their eyes on the Independent Teams’ and Independent Drivers’ championships but I think we’re doing okay overall. We’ve seen what happened today with Tom Ingram getting two wins. I’m not just a mathematical option at the minute. I’m still in with a good shout. We’d have to have a stonking weekend and rely on others having a bit of bad luck but we’ve got two cars in this team that went well around Brands last year, so we’ve got to make the most of it. It’s going to be one hell of a showdown."

Tom Ingram said: “It was fantastic. I’m really pleased as I love those conditions! What we’ve found with the Corolla is that on the faster circuits it’s just so, so good. We keep making such massive changes between events. We find things that really work and refine those. It’s never going to be a five-minute process. It was really enjoyable, and what a massive achievement for the team. I was happy to keep going. It’s nice in that situation with the drivers battling to see who’s bravest.”

Jack Goff said: “It started to sprinkle on the out-lap of race three and we made the call. It means so much to me, my family, our sponsors and the team. I couldn’t see anything. My windscreen completely steamed up with ten laps to go and I was driving through a little clear spot in the corner. It was so tricky. It’s unreal. I won my first podium with this team at Brands Hatch in 2013. It means so much for all of them. Things haven’t gone our way this year so I’m chuffed to bits.”

Jack Goff secures maiden win for Team HARD

Team HARD's Jack Goff secured the first ever Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship victory for the Kent-based team in a dramatic rain affected finale at Silverstone.

The race commenced in dry conditions but was quickly turned into a very damp occasion as drivers had to choose between the gamble of staying on Dunlop Sport Maxx dry tyres or switching to the Dunlop BluResponse wets.

The likes of BTC Racing's Josh Cook and Halfords Yuasa Racing's Dan Cammish led the way early on and were seemingly strengthening their title credentials, but all that was to change when a safety car was called to retrieve the stricken Honda of Matt Simpson.

Over the next three laps a number of drivers chose to switch to wet tyres under safety car conditions and it proved to be a masterstroke as the conditions worsened considerably.

RCIB Insurance with Fox Transport's Goff and Laser Tools Racing's Aiden Moffat were the first to surge through the field and it would quickly become a two-way fight for victory. It was either going to be a first for Team HARD or a first ever win for the Infiniti Q50, but that was soon decided after the duo hit the front.

Moffat, pushing too hard through Copse, slid wide and spun around whilst trying to catch Goff, meaning the latter could comfortably cruise home for victory.

"Race two we did the exact same thing," said Goff. "It started to sprinkle on the out-lap of that one and we made the call. It means so much to me, my family our sponsors and the team. I couldn’t see anything. My windscreen completely steamed up with ten laps to go and I was driving through a little clear spot in the corner. It was so tricky.

"It’s unreal. I won my first podium with this team at Brands Hatch in 2013. It means so much for all of them. Things haven’t gone our way this year so I’m chuffed to bits."

Scotsman Moffat recovered to claim second, whilst Halfords Yuasa Racing's Matt Neal completed the podium.

"Frustrating not to win," said Moffat. "The car felt brilliant and I knew I had the pace. I was still confident I could come back. I need a bit of a change of overalls after that spin! It was my first rear-wheel drive wet race, so I’ll learn from it. We put a setup on it and hoped for the best. It was a big step for us today and I was confident battling at the front with Jack (Goff). It’s great to reward the team. I’ve put them through a lot with some tantrums and it’s great to be back up there.

"They were horrible conditions but we called it a lap too late," confirmed Neal. "I was confused who was running wets around us. It was still giving the slick runners good grip. I’m over the moon to be on the podium again but a bit disappointed not to get further up the road. I thought about hanging around to help Dan (Cammish) and his title battle but the disparity between him on dries and myself was just too great."

Tom Oliphant (Team BMW), Tom Chilton (Team Shredded Wheat Racing with Gallagher) and Jason Plato (Sterling Insurance with Power Maxed Racing) were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, whilst the BWW duo of Colin Turkington and Andrew Jordan were next in the order.

It was a nervy contest for both Turkington and Jordan – the pair touching at one point as they both looked to keep their respective championship challenges intact. Turkington now leads Cammish by 16 points with Jordan a further point in arrears as we move to the final rounds of the season at Brands Hatch in two weeks time.

Team HARD's joy was further bolstered with Michael Crees and Bobby Thompson completing the top ten positions for the stable's GKR Scaffolding with Autobrite Direct outfit.

Tom Ingram claims truncated race two victory

Manufacturer-backed Tom Ingram has taken a first double victory for the all-new Toyota Corolla having reclaimed the lead during a dramatic yet shortened Race Two at Silverstone.

Mid-race rain left the field running on slick Dunlop tyres in treacherous conditions, and the Mercedes A-Class of Adam Morgan was soon spiralling into the gravel and out of the race. The Safety Car was briefly called upon but with rain worsening following the restart the Race Director was left with no choice but to red flag the remainder of the contest.

Team Toyota GB with Ginsters' Ingram led from the outset before contact with Jason Plato's Vauxhall Astra let the BMW of Tom Oliphant nip by both of them and into P1.

Oliphant made his first ever restart while heading the pack, which also meant he was the first man to experience the wet conditions as the huge grid swarmed down to Copse. Oliphant's BMW 3 Series twitched wide on the exit of the first corner and he was soon shuffled down the order, as Ingram swept into an unassailable lead.

"Totally different race there and that rain was scary!" said Ingram. "I love it when it’s like that and you’ve got to be so mindful with everything. It was really enjoyable, and what a massive achievement for the team. I was happy to keep going. It’s nice in that situation with the drivers battling to see who’s bravest.

"I felt for Tom (Oliphant), losing it like that but I was trying to force him into making a slip. I’ve no idea where Jason (Plato) came from. He was tight left before the back straight and I don’t know if he came for a lunge and I didn’t see him. You always check your mirrors before turning in and next thing I knew I was broadside across the track!"

Sterling Insurance with Power Maxed Racing's Plato was another who fell away late on, but the same couldn't be said for the charging title contenders of Colin Turkington and Dan Cammish.

Team BMW's Turkington surged from 14th to second, whilst Halfords Yuasa Racing's Cammish came from 11th to third – both drivers now hold the top two positions in the overall standings with the reigning champion leading his Honda rival by 11 points.

"Sometimes you can get races like that where the dice rolls your way," said Turkington. "I had weight out of the car for the first time this weekend and I don’t think I’ve a round tyre left on the car! It was so tricky coming through the pack. I feel like I’m back in it now, so on we go!"

"What a crazy race," responded Cammish. "I knew I had to be more aggressive which I was. It was one of those races where doors open for you as people squabble. As the rain came we were so strong. I was almost by him coming to the safety car period. It might have been a chance at a victory but I’m happy with that and I’m right in the mix."

Plato took fourth ahead of the BTC Racing duo of Josh Cook and Chris Smiley, whilst Oliphant eventually wound up seventh.

BMW Pirtek Racing's Andrew Jordan lost ground in the championship race with an eighth place finish, whilst Mike Bushell and Matt Simpson completed the top ten positions.

The top 11 cars were chosen at random during the reverse grid draw, which means Adrian Flux Subaru Racing's Ash Sutton will start the Silverstone finale from pole position.

Title race takes another turn as Tom Ingram wins

Team Toyota GB with Ginsters' star Tom Ingram claimed his third win of the 2019 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship season after snatching the lead away from pole-sitter Jason Plato in the opening race at Silverstone.

The Vauxhall Astra of Plato dominated the early proceedings in greasy conditions, but the Toyota Corolla of Ingram soon had the double champion in his sights after seeing off the Hondas of Matt Neal and Chris Smiley during the first few tours of 1.67-mile National Circuit.

Plato and Ingram rubbed paintwork on lap four before last year's championship runner-up got the job done through Luffield to reignite his own title hopes.

"It was fantastic," said Ingram. "I'm really pleased. I love those conditions and I had plenty of practice back at Croft! What we've found with the Corolla is that on the faster circuits, it's just so, so good. We keep making such massive changes between events. We find things that really work and refine those. It's never going to be a five minute process.

"We knew it would come, it was a just a case of how long it'd take. We got a bit of an undercut on Jason (Plato) at Luffield and it was really tricky out there all the way through. There were bits where the car would start to rotate. You had to be mindful but as soon as I saw Jason run wide I had to go for it. He could have squeezed me more than he did so fair play to him."

Sterling Insurance with Power Maxed Racing's Plato held second until the finish, with BTC Racing's Smiley completing the podium.

"He didn't take the win off me, he was quicker," confirmed Plato. "We didn't have the pace in that race. A couple of key areas left us lacking. I couldn't get it right into Brooklands and it kept on biting me. He had a slightly better car all race through Luffield. He was better than me. I should be looking good on hard tyres in race two."

BTC Racing's Josh Cook was the first home among the main title contenders as he produced a great drive to take fourth, having started ninth on the grid. Cook made a number of impressive moves during the 22-lap race, confirming that his race pace his up there with the very best.

BMW Pirtek Racing's Andrew Jordan was the 'best of the rest' with regards to the main title protagonists, whilst Halfords Yuasa Racing's Dan Cammish and Team BMW's Colin Turkington could only manage 11th and 14th respectively – the latter recovering well from a mid-race spin.

Turkington's standings lead had been further reduced to four points back to Jordan, whilst Cammish is just nine points off the championship summit.

The remaining top ten position in the race belonged to Tom Oliphant (fifth), Matt Neal (sixth), Mike Bushell (seventh), Adam Morgan (ninth) and Tom Chilton (tenth).

Plato pips chasing pack to pole position

Double BTCC champion produces stellar Saturday performance at Silverstone

Sterling Insurance with Power Maxed Racing's Jason Plato claimed pole position for Round 25 of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship after producing a stellar performance during qualifying at Silverstone.

The double BTCC champion – still searching for his first win of 2019 – dominated proceedings throughout Saturday around the 1.64-mile National Circuit, having set the pace during both practice sessions before taking the 51st pole position of his career.

It looked as if the old guard would come out on top with Halfords Yuasa Racing's Matt Neal joining Plato on the front row for the first time in many a year, but BTC Racing's Chris Smiley had other ideas as he fired his stealth grey Honda Civic Type R up to second in the closing stages. It was an exciting duel for second, but third still represents Neal's best qualifying result of the season so far.

Tom Ingram experienced a fast but wild session behind the wheel of his Team Toyota GB with Ginsters Corolla, setting a time good enough for fourth on the grid for tomorrow's opener, before spinning off at Copse on his final run.

Team BMW's Tom Oliphant led the way for much of the running after he enjoyed an early tow from team-mate Colin Turkington. Oliphant eventually had to settle for fifth as he failed to improve in the second half of the session.

Pressure was building throughout the 30 minutes of running for championship leader Turkington as he languished outside of the top ten in his success ballast-laden BMW 3 Series, but the reigning champ showed his class on one of his final flying laps. The Northern Irishman hauled his #1 machine through the Complex and crossed the line to snatch sixth – edging out all of his main title rivals in the process.

Halfords Yuasa Racing's Dan Cammish will be frustrated with only seventh, particularly having set the second-fastest times during the earlier practice sessions, but at least he has Turkington in his sights ahead of him.

The Subaru Levorg of Ash Sutton showed better form than it has done on recent Saturdays as the 2017 champion grabbed his first top ten qualifying position since Croft back in June, ending a run consisting of 14th, 18th, 12th and 14th qualifying positions during the previous four events.

BTC Racing's Josh Cook kept his championship hopes alive with a solid lap to take ninth, whilst Adrian Flux Subaru Racing's Senna Proctor completed the top ten positions – setting the exact same lap time as Team Shredded Wheat Racing with Gallagher's Tom Chilton.

To further emphasise the highly competitive nature of the session, the top 28 cars were covered by less than a second.

Fellow title contenders Rory Butcher and Andrew Jordan will have to fight from further down the order tomorrow, after the multiple race-winning duo could only manage 12th and 14th respectively.

Rounds 25, 26 and 27 of the 2019 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship will take place at Silverstone on Sunday with a huge crowd expected to attend the 'Home of British Motor Racing'. Many more will watch the action on ITV4, which will be live throughout the day from 10:20.

Jason Plato said: "I'm really pleased for everyone here. We've kept chipping away all year. I've made a couple of parking errors that have cost us a couple of good results I think. We knew it was going to come, we just had to keep motivated and keep at it. It's great. I started to look at getting a tow early on but it was just ruining my vision. I did all my times this morning in clear air so I just thought 'let's get on with it'. Lining up on the grid is easy here because it's a straight piece of Tarmac. I've had two uncompetitive years – that hurt. I knew I hadn't forgotten how to drive a car. I just needed the right equipment. This Astra is a great little car and it's nice to be back with Vauxhall – where I won my first title. We've got a lot of that team here and it's working nicely."

Chris Smiley said: "I'm happy enough. Second is good enough. There's a little bit left in the car. We're on the front row and the guys have done a great job. We've worked on the car in a few different areas and the lap time came to us. We've got the faster soft tyre for the opener tomorrow and we want to win races. The weather looks sketchy but it's the same for everyone. I'm hoping it's not changeable and a gamble. I don't mind the rain, so we're looking forward to it."

Matt Neal said: "Old feuds never die. I was trying to get on the front row just to be alongside Jason (Plato). That gave me extra motivation and it looked to be on the cards for a while. Joking aside, I am really pleased with third. I was hoping we'd do a bit better as a team to get Dan (Cammish) up there as well, but the weight on his car was just a bit too much. Tomorrow, we need to see what the weather does. I imagine the BMWs will be all over us from the start, but we should have good race pace in the dry. If it's wet then it could be a bit more of a lottery, but either way it will be a team game on our side."

Jason Plato doubles up

The Vauxhall Astra of Jason Plato has topped the timesheets in both free practice sessions ahead of qualifying for Round 25 of the 2019 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at Silverstone.

The Sterling Insurance with Power Maxed Racing star is yet to take a pole position or victory this season, but this weekend suggests this could be his best chance yet.

"I've had a good season so far and made a couple of errors," said Plato. "I firmly believe I should have had two or three wins this season and we've currently got zero. I want to win this weekend, so does Matt (Neal) and so do any number of other lunatics so it's going to be a great race weekend."

As per the opening session, it was Halfords Yuasa Racing's Dan Cammish in second place with his Honda team-mate Matt Neal following him home in third.

Manufacturer-backed Toyota driver Tom Ingram was fourth with BTC Racing's Chris Smiley in a solid fifth – making it three Honda Civic Type Rs inside the top five.

The BMW duo of Tom Oliphant and Andrew Jordan were next in the order, with Knockhill race-winner Jake Hill seventh in the striking Trade Price Cars Audi S3.

Adam Morgan (Mac Tools with Ciceley Motorsport) and Ash Sutton (Adrian Flux Subaru Racing) completed the top ten positions.

Qualifying for Round 25 of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship takes place at 15:15 and will be streamed live from 15:10 via www.itv.com/btcc.
