Formula 1 star Giancarlo Fisichella will drive for the works Alfa Romeo team, Autodelta, in the final round of the European Touring Car Championship at Monza next weekend.
In its attempts to win the drivers' title with Gabriele Tarquini, Autodelta will run a five-car squad also featuring Nicola Larini, Roberto Colciago and James Thompson. Fisichella is no stranger to touring cars, having raced for Alfa in the International Touring Car Championship in the past.
"It will be like coming back to his roots," said Autodelta team manager Monica Sipsz, "Because I was his team manager then. And our technical director Marco Calovolo was his race engineer."
Fisichella raced an Alfa 155 V6 for two seasons in 1995 and '96. His F1 career then took off, and this year featured his first victory in the rain-affected Brazilian GP at Interlagos.
BMW's Jorg Muller is tied with Tarquini at the head of the points table going into the final round. The Monza event will also be the venue for Alex Zanardi's return to racing.
