you would expect someone too, diesels make up a large amount of car sales.

I would be surprised if they brought diesels in, as it would first have to br ratified by the FIA. This is only likely if some ETCC cars go down the diesel route first.

I'm afraid you are a bit behind the times, Bill.
Diesel powered cars were ratified by the FIA for use within the S2000 regulations (i.e. ETCC spec) some months ago, and thus are eligible to compete in both the ETCC and BTCC from 2004.

I think a team arriving with a diesel would be great for the profile of the series.
It would also be great to watch, the diesels must be lightening off the line.

Sorry Alan - I missed that.
However, I would still think it unlikely that Seat would bring a diesel car into the BTCC unless it has been already tested in the European championship

Why ?? ...
... never heard of a 'Dynometer' ?
Also Audi used the same engine to compete at 'The Spa 24 hrs'.:)

I thought SEAT had already run a diesel-powered Toledo - and with some considerable success - in Italy. I'm pretty sure that development of this technology is already some way down the line.

Well, I'd have thought that if Seat UK decide to do the BTCC, they will want to take a well-grounded engine, simply to take advantage of the development work already done in the ETCC.
Having said that, I think that the Seat engine is its real weak point, so if a diesel project materialises, who knows?

I think Seat will use a diesel - but they won't do it until 2005.

It depends what they think of the two championships. They could choose to develop a diesel in the BTCC with the plan of using it for an ETCC assault if it's successful. In fact, that could be a reason to justify a BTCC campaign as well as an ETCC one.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

That is a fair point Paul.
Of course we must remember that that VW group are no strangers to diesels and have already raced them. So they wouldn't exactly be starting from scratch.
As Bramble says - it would be interesting to see a diesel off the line - all that torque!!;)

I hope that the SEAT's will use a diesel unit, it would be nice to have somethig different outhere. As Alan said diesel are competitive, they have been very sucessfull in the VW Cup in the uk and there is a series for diesel only Alfa 147's in germany. So I say bring the diesel engine into the BTCC:)

Autosport today has some info about SEAT, they say their plans should be announced within a week. No final decisions have been taken yet though.

Well said Kestrel!!!!
I think there will be some sort of SEAT involvement in the BTCC next year, that is a cert now.
Hope it does involve Rob Huff and Jason Plato.

Let's hope Seat avec Plato and Huff are confirmed for 2004 soon.
Remember last year with Muller and just about everyone ? More please, this time with Jason Plato in the thick of things.

Would that mean Reid would be beaten up from 2 sides next season?
He will definately have to renew his Lonsdale sponsership.
But I agree Plato would add a little extra to the mix and maybe Yvan won't be able to bully his way through quite so often with another driver who knows how to play rough.
:p :D

so were thinking that seat (currently) are not entering next year, and that if they do in 2005, they 'may' use a diesle, according to all you "boffs".
Alan
18th Nov 2003, 10:21 PM
Boffins have been known to be wrong of course!!!:D
Judging by the number of Seat Leon Cupras you see around these days (and other models) Seat may view the UK as a significant market. But then they already run the Cupra series so why do BTCC as well?
Just have to wait and see I guess!!!
Alan

So the boffins were wrong!!!
All deliveries of humble pie to tvgod!!!!:D
Still don't know if diesels though but no doubt that will become clear in the next few weeks.

There is an article in Auto Express this week about Jason and SEAT in the 2004 BTCC. More good coverage for the series.

How about Motorsport News - they've made the live ITV deal their front page splash (surely no bad thing on newsagents' shelves) and also run Plato v Muller all over page 3. Very good stuff.
