Richard Westbrook and David Pinkney have been signed by Norfolk-based Taurus Sports to lead BEAST Racing's challenge for the 2004 Porsche Michelin Carrera Cup GB.
BEAST Racing, officially launched at Snetterton today [Monday] is a new consortium of businesses operating in East Anglia and will enter two 911GT3 Cup cars in the 2004 championship. The team may expand to run a third car, subject to current negotiations.
On signing the team, Ian Dawson of Taurus Sports, said: "I am delighted to be able to work with Porsche again after being associated with them during the Group C Sportscar Championships in the 1980s.
"The establishment of Beast Racing to support our Carrera Cup GB entry is a very exciting prospect. We've brought together a highly credible and professional group of people. Both Richard and David are race winners and on our technical side Dayfd Richards has been appointed as Chief Engineer. I feel we can enter 2004 with a real chance of the championship."
The Human Performance Centre at Taurus Sports is getting the drivers into shape. Under the guidance of Dawson's son, Simon, a world ranked tennis player in 2002, qualified sports therapist and fitness trainer, Westbrook and Pinkney are being provided with the level of professional specialist nutrition advice and fitness that you might associate with Formula 1.
"Ian's experience in motorsport commands immense respect," says Westbrook. "With Simon's advice and training my physical preparation has never before been this good. We did well last year and should have won, but overall I feel the environment is better here. With Dave's technical Porsche experience, and having worked with him last year on circuits we're going to race again, plus a team mate who'll push me hard, I am confident that I can go one better this time."
"Richard's right, except that I'll be pulling him round showing him the racing line," counters Pinkney. "But, seriously I'm confident this is the right place to be. It's definitely the championship to be in and here I feel I've got a team that knows Porsche and how to get results."
Ipswich-based Propeller Design joined Taurus Sports as the first consortium member and sponsor. Charged with creating a new race team concept, identity and branding based on an initial consortium sponsorship idea suggested by Taurus Sports, Propeller is co-ordinating all the sponsorship, marketing and promotion of BEAST Racing.
Commenting on the project, Gareth Homfray-Davies said: "Not only is it an enormous amount of fun, consortium membership offers an unprecedented business opportunity. Porsche is one of the world's most evocative brands and apart from being associated with Beast's distinctively branded front running race car, it's one of the most exciting, affordable marketing opportunities available. Because of our unique approach, which I don't think has been seen at this level before, we've made the business benefits of motorsport sponsorship more accessible without any loss of quality. It's everything you'd associate with a prestigious brand, exclusive yes, and places are limited, but it's really putting the spotlight on business in East Anglia."
