Have they got it right - is Tim favourite?, will Westbrook take the title he just missed out on last year - Will the new combination of Templeman and VLR work out? - has Pinkney still got the pace?

FROM CRASHNET:-

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB starts at Thruxton this Sunday [11 April] with a strong field expected to contest the first pair of races in front of the British Touring Car Championship crowds.

The series features a 20-race programme for 911 GT3 Cup cars at all of the major UK tracks, and the opening two races will pit drivers against the unique high-speed challenge of Thruxton.

Three drivers stand out as the most likely pacesetters for the opening two races, while a gaggle of quick racers will be battling for a place on the podium.

Topping the field is former BTCC champion Tim Harvey, who drives for RPM Motorsport this season after a couple of guest appearances in the championship in 2003. Harvey, a former Porsche Supercup racer, is back racing a Porsche for a full campaign and will be a favourite, both in pre-season predictions and with the big crowd expected at Thruxton over the Easter weekend.

Other strong contenders include Richard Westbrook (BEAST Racing), who was championship runner-up in 2003 and Jason Templeman (Team VLR), who finished third last season. Both are determined to make 2004 their title season, and both are eager to get their campaigns off to flying starts.

However, amongst their rivals will be David Pinkney (BEAST Racing), a race winner at Thruxton last year. Pinkney rates Thruxton as one of his favourite tracks, and his pace at the venue is legendary.

A real dark horse, and another driver who loves the high-speed challenge of Thruxton, is Jonathan Fildes, the reigning Renault Clio champion. The Irishman is new to Porsches, and knows that he is on a learning curve with the TCR squad, but will surely develop into a strong contender over the early races of the season.

Red Line Racing and Team Parker Racing will head to Thruxton with very strong three-car squads. RLR has Yorkshiremen Nigel Rice and Des Winks, both returning to racing after a break due to injury and illness, respectively. They are joined by Jason Young who is back for a full Carrera Cup campaign this season.

Having guided Barry Horne to the 2003 title, Team Parker Racing has two Porsche newcomers in the form of Caterham aces Chris Cooper and Martin Rich, while Mark Hazell returns to Porsche racing after a year out in 2003.

Racing brothers Andy Britnell and Gary Britnell (Motorbase Performance) are back to build on the experience gained in 2003, and will be bidding for podium finishes, while series newcomer Marcus Thomas lines up with Templeman in the VLR squad. Though relatively new to racing, Thomas should prosper under the wing of Vic Lee and his team.

With Jonathan Cocker gone to GT this year, I'll be cheering on Richard Westbrook. He was awesome at Thruxton last year, let's hope he has another mega-overtaking day this weekend!

Dave sounded pretty pleased with todays test (unlike Mr Rich who visited a barrier - ouch - hope he is rich to pay for the repairs).
My spy says the car is very very very pink - now this I have got to see.
It looked as if Tim was on a mission - taking to the grass and kerbs.
Going to be a cracker of a season I reckon.

Tim Harvey looked mighty in testing last week at Silverstone, but if Dave Pinkney drives at Thruxton like he did last year, even Tim will have to work hard to beat him.
I rate Jonathan Fildes very highly too, and with the Britnell brothers joining in as well I reckon the racing should be very exciting.

With the Britnels there anything could (and does) happen. I just had to snigger when Dave came up behind the two of them at Mondello and in their rush to get out of the way they pushed each other off the circuit - very funny!

Jonathon Cocker should be good as well - well he will have enough practice what with GTs as well.
Fildes, Templeman, Tim, Westbrook & of course Dave - all good - all could win

That is the best line up for the Porsches I have ever seen, I am really looking forward to it!

Err race 1, Westbrook and race 2, Harvey.

:D

But I reckon Fildes for the Championship. 1st meeting and he has the pace. Had the upper hand against all bar he established guys.

Why does Pinkney always fluff it up? He is fast.

Was it only me, or do you think the sight of the ugliest car on the planet (Cayenne), in close proximity to one of the nicest (GT3) was perhaps the Germans attempt at irony.

Seeing the 4 wheel drive horror follow the pack round was either an act of brilliantly funny self deprecation, or a tragic attempt to treat us like the gullible Americans... Bling!

I know, I know, they have a job to do.;)

Very fast, very capable, but also liable to be sandwiched, thrown in the air and land busting the steering.
He did have his good moments this weekend - roll on Brands.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Jonathan Cocker turn up and race this weekend, although he didn't really seem competitive. Richard Westbrook looked good, and good to see Jonathan Fildes too - he's obviously taken to the Porsche like a duck to water.

When Autosport reported that he'd moved up to British GT, that gave the impression that he'd be doing just that. Also he wasn't listed in the programme at Thruxton this weekend, so that also backed up the idea that it was more of a guest appearance.
