I have learned today of the tragic death of Clio Cup competitor Kevin Lloyd. Kevin was involved in a accident whilst racing at Thruxton. As I understand it, no other driver was involved.

Motorsport has suffered a great loss today. Kevin Lloyd, an enthusiastic competitor who really enjoyed his racing and took part 'just for fun'.

This tragic news comes as a terrible shook and I am sure we are all united in offering our condolences, thoughts and prayers to KevinÃ*s family and friends.

Kevin, you will be missed. Rest in peace.

This is the first I've seen of such horrible news....

Words are usually insufficient in these times, but of course my thoughts are with his family, friends, fellow compettitors and marshals who had to attend such a tragic scene...

RIP :(

That is absolutly devastating to hear - he was always such a fun loving character who obviously loved to race, and I have to say that not once did I ever see him with any bad driving standards - such a rareity these days. I saw him quite a lot last week in the Oulton Park paddock and I just cant believe this has happened. All of my thoughts and wishes are with his family and friends, and as codename_47 pointed out, the marshals and doctors who had to attend the scene. I hope a fitting tribute will be made at the Clio's next outing at Croft

From the Renault site:

Renault UK, the British Automobile Racing Club and Thruxton Circuit very much regrets to announce, following a racing accident during SaturdayÃ*s ELF/BTE Lawline Renault Clio Cup race at the Hampshire venue, much-loved competitor Kevin Lloyd succumbed to his injuries, despite immediate attention from the circuitÃ*s four doctors.

Kevin, who was 43-years old and leaves behind wife Sandra and two children, had been a regular fixture in the Clio Cup paddock since he first became associated with the category as a driver sponsor two years ago before turning his hand to racing himself towards the end of the 2002 season.

His first full season of racing came in 2003 when he competed with his close friend Lee BrookesÃ* Total Control Racing team. While his sheer size meant he would never challenge at the front of the pack, Kevin didnÃ*t care. He was in the Clio Cup for one reason and one reason only, to enjoy himself.

This year, heÃ*d opted to have even more fun by setting up his own Kal-Tec team ñ named after his Wolverhampton-based company ñ and was his usual, jovial self ahead of the ninth race of the season which, very sadly, proved to be his last.

In a sport which many can often take far too seriously, Kevin was the proverbial breath of fresh air and was a true friend to many within not just the Renault paddock but also the British Motorsport scene as a whole. He will be sorely missed by all involved with the ELF/BTE Lawline Renault Clio Cup, his close friends and, of course, his family.

In tribute, Renault UK Motorsport Manager Tim Jackson commented: ìIt is with deep regret we make this announcement today and on behalf of Renault UK, the BARC and Thruxton Circuit, I wish to extend our deepest, heartfelt condolences to KevinÃ*s family and friends.

ìKevin was a unique character, not just in the Renault paddock but through the whole of British Motorsport. He competed every race weekend with the sole aim of having fun and this he achieved while also making many good friends along the way.

ìIÃ*m sure I speak for everyone who knew Kevin when I say we will all sorely miss him and itÃ*s with great sadness we announce the passing of a truly great sportsman, competitor and inimitable character.î

This is a terrible shame. I've read a number of items about this now, but no-one actually said what happened. Does anyone know how he crashed?

My sympathy to his family and friends.

Very sad. You see so many crashes in Clios that you start to imagine that the drivers are invunerable.
Never knew Kevin to speak to /or recognise even but he gave a lot of amusement watching him battle for lower order places. Anyone who can have "Lightweight" on his car when he obviously wasn't would be a guy I would have liked to meet. The fact I will never have the chance makes his demise even sadder.
I just want to add that to all the sentements expressed above.

He was a lovely bloke and liked by all in the paddock and it was a terrible shock which still hasn't really sunk in.

He was having a great race and had managed to keep Steven Wood behind him for quite a few a laps. Steven managed to get a run on him at the chicane and passed him on the start/finish straight. He knew he had to defend for 1/2 a lap otherwise Kevin would try and get past again, and he did and managed to eek out a lead of 4 or 5 lengths. The next lap I saw Steven go through the complex and then Kevin some 3/4 seconds behind. The next I saw was Steven coming out of Village but no Kevin. The red flags were out immediately.

All the drivers had a meeting and decided to race and we had a one minutes silence on the grid. He would have enjoyed that race.

Our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and racing pals.

As Les said he would have enjoyed the second race and its ironic that it was one of the best races of the year but it still was not the same without Kevin. The whole atmosphere in the paddock today was just a numb feeling and last night u could not describe the shock and devestation that swept throught the paddock.

As the commentators said he was a true racer who was outhere to enjoy himself and was actually having a good scrap with Steve Wood and barry sime who was just ahead but as les said that lap when only 2 cars reappeared on the far side something was not right.

It was when I saw the ambulances and the immediate red flags thats when i realised it was serious, and when i heard what had happend i couldnt beleive it such a likeable guy, well respected with the drivers and a very clean driver who gave lots of room but would have a bl*ody good battle too.

Kevin, Clios will never be the same

Rest in peace mate
