Hi
I was wondering if their are any tom chilton fans out there because from some of the threads I have read he doesn't seem to popular. Im a fan of tom chilton as he bring excitment to every race and I wondered what everyone else's opinions are of him.
thanks

He's certainly a controversial chap, which is probably part of the reason you find him exciting.
My diplomatic answer is that he's definitely no respecter of reputations, which can often be a good thing. however he does tend to get people's backs up by upsetting them on track then rubbishing them in interviews.
He also has a reputation of being very aggressive and impatient on the track, even for someone of such youth. A good example is qualifying a Brands a couple of years ago where I saw him roll at Paddock simply because he got progressively more aggressive on the kerbs to the point that the car was so badly unsettled that he couldn't control it through the rest of the corner, especially since there was a bit of gravel on the track from someone that had an excursion a couple of laps earlier. You could argue that wasn't his fault but a good driver will leave something in reserve. As a result he had to miss the race.
He started to show maturity in the latter part of last season, so who knows what's to come?

I saw him at Brands Hatch signing autographs at 0900 keeping the fans happy, he is a young, keen, talented racer learning his trade. With a driver like Chilton the racing is never boring, and if he does go to far then it is up to the Officials to keep him in line. I think when he controls his aggression on the track he may well be a future champion of the BTCC.

I wouldn't say I was a fan, but I have no problem with the guy. He does need to mature up a bit though and think his actions through, he seems to get impatient and reckless and that may make for spectacular racing, but he's playing with other peoples livelyhoods and maybe even lives.
He may well be a more "exciting" driver that Muller, but have you noticed how many titles and races Muller has won........Same with Montoya vs Schumacher in F1, aggressive and exciting doesn't always win races..
I do find this obsession some people have with his rich daddy interesting, the world of motor sport is full of kids with rich parents buying them a ride (Matt Neal started in a similar way), I just wonder why some are so obsesssed with his good "fortune"...

he really needs to calm down at Knockhill last year the way he was bouncing the kerbs at Duffus was just plain dangerous, he could be a better than average driver but he isnt in the class of Colin Turkington or even luke Hines

I'm sorry but Chilton has been racing in the BTCC for years, if he still has a lot to learn then he'll be 40 before he's any good. Nobody looks at Raikkonen and says he's good, but has a lot to learn, and he's been in F1 as long as Chiltons been in BTCC.

But he has a point without his dad he may not even be racing at all - originally quoted by btcc2
the same could be said for his brother max though! at the end of the day racing is obvious in the blood and if their dad wants to pay for them to enjoy the sport why not!!!!
as much as i like luke hines the same could be said for him and many of the other top touring car racers out there! it seems to me that there is alot of envy and because toms doing something alot of people will never get to do like many of the other drivers people want to bad mouth his dad for letting him do something he enjoys!!!!
i'm definetley a tom chilton fan he is 1 of the nicest people you'll ever meet and he always has the time to stand and talk to you!

Hear hear!!
I met him yesterday (albeit for a very short time) and he was the only guy to say "Thank you" when I handed him something to sign, and actually asked me how I was! None of the others even spoke to me, and when they spoke to other people when I was listening, it was all about football teams (Dan Eaves) or themselves.
Ok so Chiltern's style isn't "safe" in your eyes... someone must think he's ok or he wouldn't be up there! If he was that unsafe they'd drag him off track.
Sorry but he enamoured himself to me yesterday, I can tell when a guy is genuinely nice and he is.

Yesterday was an example of him at his best. No mistakes in that final race and a consistent run to the flag without throwing caution to the wind and chucking it off. Although to be fair, since the Thruxton incident, he's been well behaved and back to the way he was at the end of 2004. Consistently fast, but not doing anything rash.

I was impressed by his racing yesterday, and the control he showed through the day, proof that when you drive like that it reaps rewards, Tom deserved that wim, he drove with his head and stayed cool when other lost theirs, ok the weather helped, but he managed to stay on when more experienced drivers threw away their chance.

I have to agree that Tom boy impressed with his drive in the wet yesterday. He is definitely one of the best drivers in the championship and we need him to stay for the rest of the year. It's vital to have drivers who can run at the front of the field and mix it with the leaders and Tom is certainly one of those.
The team is still playing catch up don't forget and im sure Tom will get quicker during the rest of the season.

My point is that Tom in a Sportscar is a very good driver and his 16 yrold brother is even better.
Their ability to drive through traffic at the Silverstone LMS was inspired.

good point that i think chilton has took a bit of stick recently i to have in some way have given him a bit of stick but like you have said tom is a works driver for one of the biggest teams there so when it comes to it he cant be that bad of a driver and a big outfit like vauxhall i would imagine they no there stuff if they didnt think he wasnt up to the task then he wouldnt be driveing for them i say the best of luck to him next year anyway hes a young lad and like anything the more you practice the better you get.

Yeah i'm quite a fan of Tom Chilton...he seems a canny lad and after standing talking to him and obtaining an autograph from him at Knockhill...he seems pretty down to earth.
I think I may have said a few things prior to this on the forum regarding bad feelings towards him but I'll take them all back since meeting him face to face...as this certainly changes your view rather than just know them from armchair viewing!

You are right there Laura, it is easy to get an impression of someone that isnt entirely accurate. Having said that though, its just as easy to get the wrong impression when you meet them.

I think Tom shows a huge amount of potential and is really settling into a role in a top flight team. Yes he does seem a bit OTT, big hair, perma tan, sunglasses; but as I've said before judge a driver by their results. He's done a rock steady job for VXR this year and I'm sure he'll go from strength to strength. So what if his family have money and financially support his career, which of us can say we wouldn't do the same for our offspring?

I dont have a problem with how people pay for their drive & your right sinclat, given the means I think most of us would do the same.
I think your wrong about Chilton this season though, he has not been rock solid at all. Chilton should be picking up race wins & podiums, but he's not. I can remember quite a few instances where he's finished outside the points. I dont think you can put it down to luck either, over exuberent maybe, under pressure definately, but he should be able to handle it.

Yes he was, but I put that down to the machinery underneath him. Only Yvan Muller could make that car anywhere near good enough over race distance.
Well, heres his results so far & I have to admit he's had a few more podiums than I thought. It does seem as though he is regressing, maybe confidence is an issue although it doesnt seem like it.

Looking at the points table, there are quite a few drivers I think he should be well in front of. Turner being his biggest rival, but 40 points doesnt seem that big a failure. Its a big ask to turn it around at Thruxton, but not impossible, it does seem like it could be a big weekend in this young mans career though! Do you think a good showing at Thruxton will be enough for him to retain his drive at VX? Personally I think it should be, but im no team manager!

all drivers have bad seasons, and tom's not had done well with vxracing at all really, i think he's much better in the smaller cars and i think shove him back in a civic and he'll do much better!
but think of the amount of pressure he must be dealing with, i mean, if i was a racing driver and i had all the pressure on me id be put off quite a lot too, which obviously causes mistakes.
i think he's proven he can do it and that he's a good driver, but he's just had a LOT of bad luck these last two years,
