OK there's been a lot of discussion, and mainly slating of Matt for the 1st race incident.

I was up at Paddock Hill Grandstand, so a not bad view, although it was the other side of the track. My inital reaction was that there was no way he should have tried the move, as he was a good car length, maybe 2, behind Paul as they came through Surtees. It looked very much like a desperate lunge that was only going to end one way, and would need another car there to act as his brakes.

Having watched the replay on Motors TV last night, and seen the angle from behind, I've changed my mind.

By his own admission, Paul says he had slowed too much, and you can see he brakes earlier and more than needed as he gets to Mclaren. Bearing in mind that this is the final lap/chance to make a lunge, Matt seized the chance and went for it, as Paul HAD started to get wide in the corner.

Paul tried to close the door, but Matt was committed by then. I really do think it was a racing accident, against my 1st opinion at the track. Paul was also naive to put himself into sucha vulnerable position, and should have realised that Matt would bite his hand off if he left any kind of gap. He could have at least have fought him round the outside if he had stayed wide.

I know that plenty of you will disagree with this, but the rear camera ciew shows this quite clearly.

I've not seen it yet but I'm prepared to give Matt the benefit of the doubt - I reckon he's been about long enough to know whats on and what's not on, and usually when a driver does something blatently wrong they get punished for it - and he will know this.

I think Paul will learn from this.

Matt has done this at least once before at the same corner, but I can't remember the circumstances exactly. Give Matt a gap and he will go for it - most of the other drivers would have done exactly the same thing.

Really would like to see the replay from the TV coverage. Only saw the giant screen at the circuit on Monday from one camera angle. Will reserve judgement until then. From the views I have seen though, to be charitable, it was clumsy at best. Given Matt's reaction to Gavin Pypers mistake/misjudgement at Mondello, how ironic looking back. Paul O'Neill could easily have been punted out of the race. Haven't drivers, (Pyper and Bennett, if recent memory serves) copped bans for misdemeanors in the past ?

You can't call it a misdemeanour if you're reserving judgement stig.....

Really, seeing the footage changed my view completely - I slated Matt something chronic on the day...

Take you point Frank. Will wait for the TV highlights and then give a more considered opinion.

Wasn't lucky enough to be at Brands so had to watch the race on Motors TV. The replay they showed from the rear camera shows the gap was there. Even Tim Harvey said at the time it was a racing incident.

Glad to see that we have got back to a proper discussion without all the name-calling of one of the earlier posts I saw.

Eventually got round to watching it last night.
From the front (and where I was watching) it looked as if Matt pushed Paul off but from the back it was a totally different story. There you could see a gap, Matt went for it (OK it was not a very big gap), Paul tried to defend and clash. Bit of inexperience from Paul and eagerness from Matt = racing incident. If Paul had moved over a few yards earlier then the gap would have gone, a few yards later and Matt would have been forced off on to the grass.

What got me though - I looked closely at both boys in 'parc ferme' and Matt looked guilty as sin but Paul wasn't that unhappy.
