The Fujitsu V8 Supercars season started with tragedy. Ashley Cooper died from his injuries received in the crash in Adelaide. The Confederation of Australian Motorsport today confirmed the tragedy.

Cooper was sustained his fatal injuries in a big crash where his car went in to the barriers at over 200 km/h. Medical personnel was quickly at the scene and Cooper was transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Sadly there was nothing that could save his life.

This was the second fatal accident of in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar series in the last two years. In 2006 Mark Porter from New Zealand died from his injuries after a multi-car crash at Bathurst.

I heard that he had been in the accident first thing on Saturday and then this morning i turned the pc on to find out that he had died from his injuries :( very sad start to the V8 Supercar season and motorsport season in general.

I personally think that will be the end of motor racing at Adelaide because there was 4 big crashes there at the weekend one of which was fatal in the end.

There was a 3 car pile up in the V8 Utes and one of the drivers involved in that crash ended up in intensive care aswell.

What Dreadful way to start the Motorsport Season for 2008. My thought go out to his wife and family.

It was a big hit however I am suprised that with it being on the passenger side that yet it would have hurt but not kill him. Something must have broken in he car i.e seat or belts. Apparently there is a Full investigation being carried out.

or maybe the roll cage snapped because i dont think V8 Supercars hold up to accidents as they should with the speed theyre capable of

with so many deaths I think they should take a serous look at there specs for the cars.

Thoughts go to the family members.

It's always sad news, to hear when a driver loses his life. If he crashed into the barriers at over 200/kmh, it must have been the way the car crashed into the barriers, that caused him to pass away from his fatal injuries

But my point is that if the cars are capable of those speeds then they should be able to stand up to impacts at those speeds without hurting the driver

Im no man to talk about V8 supercars as ive never followed it.
But id be a bit worried about Gio and Matt neal racing in them later in the year with them concrete walls and them speeds, they look really dangerous and there stupid quick cars.

ok after seeing that crash they definetley need to look at the cars strength.
I would understand if someone came into contact with him. The de acceleration would have been immense hitting the wall like that but it was sideways on.
Do they use the hans device there?
