Here are my pics - hope you get a good idea of the atmosphere of the weekend. I chickened out of trying to photograph the rain - I was trying to hang on to the umbrella, and anyway the last time I used my 70-300 zoom in heavy rain it went into a coma (it's never been the same since - I desperately need a new one).

Other than playfully pretending to throw it at one of the team a couple of times,:D , I think he was just helping the lads clear up after they had been practicing their pit stops in the morning.
This photo of the Team Dynamics/Halfords member asleep against the tyres on the pit wall was actually taken during Race 1. Obviously confident that Gordon wouldn't be needing hima and Tom had the right fuel in his car.:D

Hi all, i am in the process of ordering a 500mm lens. but i have a question i would like anwsering!
i am torn between two lenses, both are Sigma ones, one is 50-500mm without images stabilizer and the other is 150-500mm with image stabilizer (which isnt released yet)
The question is do i hold fire and go with the one with image stabilizer when it is released or will the one without be fine?
Thanks
Paul

I'd go with the 150-500 image stabilizer one assuming you don't mind paying the extra. Although the 50-500 is more flexible with a greater range so it might be better if you don't have many other lenses.

Thanks Marc, there isnt much price difference in them to be honest one is £730 one is £750.
Would there be a noticable difference in image quality with the image stabilizer? or as we pan to follow the cars would there not be that much difference!

I think it depends how steady you are in the first place, I've not had an image stabilizer until recently and the photos I've taken with it since have not been noticeably different. If your photos are generally okay anyway then I think you'll be able to manage fine without it, if you end up with lots of camera shake then it would certainly be helpful. I guess I've contradicted what I said earlier with that! The descision really is whether you want the extra range of the 50-500 or the stabilizer of the other lens.

Could also buy a monopod to help stabilise the picture. :)

You could, although I hardly ever use mine as I find it stops me moving the camera freely. It helps when its really windy though!

Yeah, Gaz found the same thing, harder to track the cars to take the picture.
Though the sigma lens is quite heavy. I'm glad he's the one carrying it!

Thanks thats a big help, i am ordering a monopod too as the lens was sooo heavy when i tried it in the shop, couldnt hold it for a whole day shooting!

The other option i thought about is getting a 300mm lens with a teleconvertor or just putting one on my current 200mm?
Marc W
20th Apr 2008, 07:23 PM
A lens with a bigger focal length is a much better option than a teleconvertor, they are okay if you don't have a choice but they reduce the available aperture and don't work well in low light.

Thanks Marc, just the desision of stabilizer or no stabilizer!

Quite by accident, when I was in a situation where the monopod wouldn't reach the ground (at Thruxton, on the banking at the chicane) I found that if I tucked the bottom end into my belt. it gave me the same stability as if it were on the floor (in terms of countering vertical camera shake), but I was able to move the camera much more freely.

I find that as well - especially as I take a lot of angled shots.

I agree. I use a 300mm telephoto lens and a teleconverter got shooting through the fence at Druids at Brands Hatch. While you get good results, it does take a long time to "hunt" if you lose your autofocus, and it does reduce light by another extra stop.

There is even a picture of me and Damon Hill! A rather large selection of pictures now on there but you'll be wanting the album called "BTCC 2008 - Rockingham"
I can't seem to see a Brands Hatch thread? So pictures for round's 1, 2 and 3 are also there under "BTCC 2008 - Brands Hatch 1".
Hope you all enjoy!
