Just returned from watching ITV, and have to say that the coverage was very good this week... not focusing soley on the VX Racing cars out front, but shwing some good battles throughout the field (Pyper/Turkington/Howell/O'Neill/Chilton) which were very entertaining. Was it me, or did the cameras seem to wobble a bit more than is normal - it was like the cameramen had trouble keeping the cars in shot and had to keep correcting it.

p.s. - the person who thought up the question for this week's competition certainly has a sense of humour ;)

LOL. They could make them harder. BTW it was great coverage and I have to say Silverstone has been the best meeting so far in this dissapointing 2003 season.

The cameras were a bit wobbly, but they were pretty high up and the wind towards the end of the day was horrific! Who'd be a cameraman?!

Claw, not sure if this has been a disappointing season thus far.
Hopefully things will improve even more when teams such as MG and Honda can acquire some speed (MG) and reliability (Honda)

the replays of the crashes was appaling though. eaves one, we saw it from Leslies car which shows nothing apart from eaves sideways, why cant we get external views? there is a camera that covers that bit. O'Neil with the MG, we only saw the external in the end credits for all of a second. and morrisons, the view from neal or someone that showed nothing. at least show us incar with morrison! ive found this with all meetings so far aswell. it aint too good

They showed the Morrison/Turkington/O'Neill crash from on board Morrison on the Motors TV coverage and it didn't show anything - you couldn't even see the other cars.

I thought the O'Neill angle was great - It showed the force with which the MG hit him - enough to bend the camera, and you then saw how Matt Neal got passed both O'Neill and Turkington.

The Eaves crash wasn't shown at all on the Motors TV programme, which probably means none of the external cameras caught it. The Leslie angle is very revealing - it looks like Eaves thought he was clear of the Proton, and pulled in front of it...they must only have touched by a few millimetres...

I noticed an excellent wide-angled camera in Bennett's car... good stuff - I'd like to see more of them!! Compare that to the Leslie on board footage and you can see with Bennett more around the car, and also more in the car :D

Quote of the day from Ben Edwards:

"They are racing on the shorter Internatonal Circuit, which means the cars come round more often and we see more racing!!"

Long or short, 25 laps is 25 laps!! :D

The point is that if they used the GP circuit, there would be a gap of nearly 3 minutes each time you saw the leaders...and the races would only last about 15 laps.

The races are calculated on total distance, not on number of laps, which is why Brands Indy has more laps than other races.

Personally I think the race distance should be calculated by time - so there were more laps on fast circuits like Thruxton, and fewer on long slow circuits like Mondello.

I saw the second race on Motors TV and I thought it was fairly dull for the most part of the race.

I missed the ITV coverage, maybe I should be more attentive to their times.

Your explanation make sense, but when he said it it did sound commical , even my mate looked at me as we watched it, he thought it was a strange comment too.

Mmmmmm...

But then the problem with holding "short" races over a specified length of time brings its own problems.

All you need to do is look back to the 2001 Powertour - they started out by holding all the races (bar the GTs) over 20 mins, but they stopped that after the first few rounds. The reason?

As soon as you get the safety car out, the field slows down and so takes longer to complete a lap. The clock ticks down all the time and after one F3 race (at Snetterton, I do believe), I think they only had something like six racing laps in total once they'd allowed for all the time spent behind the safety car. It is a good idea, but for races less than say an hour, it doesn't really work.

Better keep it to a set distance / number of laps IMHO.

I think Silverstones ITV coverage was only the 2nd highlights programme I've managed to catch this year and it was good. Specially liked the feature on the "lone ranger"...:D

Good job it was good because the live coverage is starting to turn me off the BTCC, ever so slightly (it may be the fact it's not MG winning all the time though ;))
