I remember Gareth saying so, but it was a sunny day too.
it'll be my first one, as I was unable to go last year, I was gutted, but Gaz shared his pictures with me so it wasn't all bad. :)

I'll be there. Shame it's not at Brands though, if it coincides with an early shift I could have gone to work and been there by 1:30 and saved having to take a days holiday. My eldest doesn't have college on Thursdays so he'll probably be with me. Not sure on youngest though as he'll be at school.

Went to my first ever media last year, as it fell on my birthday. Will probably not go this year as its probably not worth the hour or so drive. Was good to see all the cars for the first time but unless your there for photo opportunities you soon get bored.

Well Rockingham has a pit roof, so if you have a good lens you can take photos quite closely. The cars are worked on in the garages, so you can't watch them as freely as you can at Thruxton.

last year quite a lot of people went to the pit lane early and was rewarded with some quality close ups of the cars and drivers before we were all kicked off the pit lane, the cars are in every two or three laps for tyre changes anyway so being on the pit roof you dont need a flashey camera to get some good shots, the lap tower was working last year so you could keep an eye on who was fastest, towards the end it was getting pritty serious last year so try stay to the end, just remember its a test day aswell so drivers and teams are trying to do the last tweeking of the cars.also if you get there a little early some of the drivers (turkington and flash) were in the cafe/bar having some food before testing started and were quite chatty and hospitable.

Let's hope for some sun. Any point in taking a scanner along?
Can you get fairly close to the cars or not?
I havent been to Rockingham before, and doubt I will make race day this year, although I plan to do Brands for the first meeting (also a long way) and Oulton Park, as well as Croft (my local circuit) and hopefully Knockhill. Possibly Slilverstone. Who knows!

The cars will only be testing so I doubt their will be that much worth listening to over the radios.
As far as getting close to the cars, public only have access to the pit roof, and the paddock at the back and grandstands so th epit roof is as close as you will get.

I don't think having a bigger grid is neccessarily out of the question. Look at all the seats that have yet to be confirmed:
1, maybe 2 Fords
1 Motorbase BMW possible
1 KWR MG
1 Maxtreme SEAT possibly
Michael Doyle
AFM Racing's BMW 120d's
1 Tempus Lacetti
Mat Jackson
Team Dynamics still need to confirm their plans
Ian Court might be entering too
Say all of them enter. You have a field of nearly 30 cars! Chances are they won't all be filled, but we will see some of them filled. I reckon we will still see mid-20s per race. But we will have to wait until the Media Day (8 days ) to see who all is entered.

I don't think having a bigger grid is neccessarily out of the question. Look at all the seats that have yet to be confirmed:
1, maybe 2 Fords
1, maybe 2 Motorbase BMWs
I have heard that sadly Michael Doyle may not be with us this year. Damn shame as he was a breath of fresh air last year and showed some real promise.

Well "the cars driving round in circles" is pretty much what they do all year racing, and that pays to put it on the TV.

Well, there's about 17 or so already confirmed, with some other seats still to be filled e.g. Tempus, KWR. Plus there are still teams evaluating/not confirmed their options e.g AFM, Dynamics, third cars for Motorbase + RAC. So I think that once it comes to Media Day, we'll find the entry list could be early-mid 20s. Who knows, if we're lucky with some unknown teams coming in, we may hit 30, but that's wishful thinking :p
Seriously, I expect mid-20s, around the 24-26 bracket.

Looking at who's confirmed thus far im quite happy with this Year's Grid.
truth be told we don't need a 30 Car Grid just to produce a good Race, id honestly be happy with just an 18-20 Car Grid,
We currently have Cars from Vauxhall, Honda, Seat, BMW, Chevrolet, MG and Ford.. and we could potentially see an Alfa Romeo and Volvo at somepoint.
4 Days to go, Might aswell be 40.. I have a feeling these next 3 Days are gonna be the longest off my Life ¬.¬

I have a few questions about Media Day as never been before:
1 - Is the PA/Tannoy system on, with Alan Hyde telling us whats going on/interviews etc??
2 - Are the grandstands open to have a sit in?
3 - Is there any kind of programme/guide available?
4 - Are all the drivers happy to have photos? Are the teams cheerful and happy to let you have a look around the cars?
5 - Are there food vans around to grab some grub?
6 - What time is it? 1pm start?
Ill think of some more as i go along.

As far as I know we only have access to the Grandstands, Pit roof and the paddock at the back of the pits. There will be no pitlane access. No Media Day I've been to before has had anykind of programme/guide. We are allowed in at 1pm, the rest I don't know.

media day is designed for the media 1st and foremost, teams will be getting their sponsors logos in a many pictures and videos as possible. there will be odd vehicles circulatiing the track with various lens and camera attachments taking a variety of images for use on here and the many printed magazines, advertisements and pr brouchures that the championships and teams used each year. drivers are also hauled of to get their individual and group mug shots taken and tv crews get those little snipps they drop into the live coverage
then once all thats over most of the teams take to the track with various agendas, things to try , things to prove, points to score etc the media circus continues with more candid shots and maybe the odd incident to keep the attention
the rockingham pit roof is an excellent spot to watch it all from, peer down on ur fav driver or team then shuffle from side to side to watch the cars round the infield sections and back over for the blast down the front straight. its a long way from a btcc meeting in terms of entertainment but then we are all just sad addicts and will watch a touring car do just about anything lol

I have a few questions about Media Day as never been before:
Based on previous years..
1 - No
2 - The lower part of the main grandstand and the pit garage roof will be open
3 - No
4 - The pit garages and pit lane are off limits unless you are a team member or guest of a team, so unlikely you will get a close look at any of the cars.
5 - Diner under the main stand will be open
6 - Gates will be open 1pm or if your lucky a few minutes earlier.
The thing to remember here is that the afternoon is essentially a normal test session. The drivers and teams may be happy to chat if they have time but their priority is to get some test mileage. The publicity photos and general smoozing goes on in the morning before the public get in.

we got lucky last year and went across to the pits early and got some good close ups before being kicked up stairs to the roof, the cars are in every couple of mins so you dont have to wait long before your fav driver is in changing tyres ,there is no programe but if you look for the big tower youll see whos fastest, just remember this is a offical test day aswell as being media day .the cafe under the main stand was open last year and had the pleasure of having flash on one table and turks on the next table to us.you should get some good photos without having a flashy camera.have a wonder round the pits and you could be lucky and meet a few drivers while the pit crews set up the cars for another test stint

Turks 1.23.648 is damn damn fast!!!
Current records -
Lap Records/
Qualifying: Gordon Shedden (GBR), Honda Civic, 1m24.327s (82.81mph) on 13 April 2008
Race: Tom Onslow-Cole (GBR), Vauxhall Vectra VXR, 1m24.698s (82.45mph) on 13 April 2008
The pit lane entry is quicker than completing the lap, so thats why some people appear to go faster, but don't move up the pecking order. ;)

Effectively Turkingtons lap will mean nothing.
The only lap records that will be held are those which are done in qualifying and during the course of a race.
The only way Turkington could get that time recognised is if he does it during a qualifying session.

im surprised with Jason Plato being so "passionate" about BTCC that he's not there just to see whats gonna be happening this year.

One thing i've noticed about Plato over the years is he talks a good fight. If he was that passionate he'd buy a drive the Focus and Lacetti are both good cars. He needs to put up or shut up. Take a leaf out of Petter Soldberg's book, thats passionate about a championship.

Couple of non-driving faces I saw today:
Mickey Doyle (along with most of his team.) - chatting to various people today.
Nick Leason who was mooching around. :)

It wasnt as good as last year.
But atleast i had people to talk to this year :D
Overall iam very happy with this Years Grid, I think we could be in for quite a Competitive Season.
I don't think it will a VXR Runaway season and i honestly Believe guys like Turkington and Sheddon can be Title Challengers this Year..
There could even be afew Upsets instore.
I have to say being at the Rock today really has got my Blood pumping and really wishing the New Season would just start.
Bring it on :)

Hi Guys, just got back from the Rock. Nice to meet a few of you from here too :D
Few points from the day, would agree that it wasnt quite as good as last year but:
- Saw Onslow-Cole hanging round the Vauxhall garage
- According to his mechanics Pinkneys livery will be like Sheddens but "imagine all the silver bits in pink"
- Warren Hughes is just helping out Tempus Sport and will not be driving for them
- Expect an announcement from Tempus about a second driver in the next few days, Harry will have one team-mate by the next test early next week and possibly 2 team mates by Brands Hatch.
If the deal comes together it will be a "big name" or "you can probably guess" as Harry put it :D
Will upload some photos later, hopefully.

Today has excited me 100% for the upcoming season. Good day all round, despite the bitter cold, i nearly froze!! Really impressed with the cars out there.
I must say, before seeing the offiical test times, I really noticed how quick Turkington was driving. I said to my brother all day that he was right on the money, through the last chicane he was visibly quicker than anyone else, so didnt suprise me when Kerry text me and told me he was quickest by a fair bit. Jelley also looked good and quick, good luck to him for the year!
The Vauxhalls looked good, all as competitive as i thought they would be, and its good to see Jordan has brought along some of his sponsorship with the team, wouldnt look right seeing Jordan racing without John Guest written somewhere on his car!!
The Aon Focus looked good, and it looked like it was going pretty quickly. Therefore imagine my suprise when i just got home and found out he was second slowest    Was there a timing glitch or was he very deceptive with how he drove??
The Tempus Lacetti looks very bland in my eyes, I was saying to Kerry, seems like its missing a major sponsor somewhere on the car! He looked pretty quick though, which is alrite.
The Dynamics Civic of Shedden looked terrific going round! The black suits it, and if they paint the silver flames along the side in pink for Pinkneys, it would be perfect. Im expecting great things from Shedden this year, a possible title challenge me reckons.
As for the rest, the CVR Leon's look alright, but couldnt get a sense of how quick they were as it seemed they werent pushing it too hard for now. John Georges beast looks much better in black, new colour, new levels of luck for him hopefully! The Motorbase cars look horrible with the RIDICULOUS blue doors, where have they come from, because it looks rubbish  But Adam seemed to be doing ok, till it broke  As for Johnson, i mean i read last night there was a rumour he would be entering, but still a shock when I saw that car roll out! Its ancient! Good luck to him though, hope he does alrite! As for the sunshine boys, car looks decent, and im a O'Neill fan so how he does alright.
Media Day has really excited me for the coming season. Im just stuck with who to support  With Jackson and Kane seemingly gone for the season, Im stuck between supporting either Jordan, Turkington, Shedden or Chilton  Im swaying towards Shedden as i love the little Civic and it looks awesome in Black, but not entirely sure yet :(
I would like to apologise to the forum members around. I was trying to get away for a few minutes so could come and speak to some of you, but didnt get the chance, so will make an extra special effort at Brands. I recognised many of you when walking around, including one who managed to be in the pit lane most the day   haha!

Yeah it was good, some proper BTCC banter on the way home. And i definetly will do :)
One thing I forgot to mention. The Aon transporter had a car on one side with #10 Chilton, and the other side #20 with no name. Therefore the second car should run as #20, but who driving?? :D
Also just thought I shall say some other interesting things I saw:
Alan Gow driving his posh Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
Alan Hyde having a nice ciggy in the dunlop cafe.
Tim Harvey having a chat with Adam after he broke down.
Tom Chilton winding up everyone in sight, including Motorbase mechanics and Andrew Jordan.
Matt Neal and Dave Pinkney chatting in the Vauxhall transporter.
Andrew Jordan's funky helmet.
And more when I remember them :D
One thing that really annoyed me today though   Blooming school children EVERYWHERE  aaaahhhh! Everytime a driver appeared, before I could get a chat, an autograph or a photo, a swarm of children would descend on him, asking him questions like "whats your favourite ice cream" Why were they all there??? It really took the edge off the day for me, hearing them screaming all the time and shouting, not having an knowledge of the BTCC at all, and most of them not even caring about it, they just saw some fast cars and got a day off school. I know the BTCC should encourage new supporters to the series, but this annoyed me, as us diehard fans taking the day off work/college didnt even get the chance to talk to drivers cause of these kids, many of whom will never step foot at a race circuit again

I guess he means JP then because the 3rd driver they apparently want is someone from the Seat Eurocup or Supercopa.

Yeah it was like that last year too, didnt really bother me that much though. Guess some of the teams invite them from the local schools.

As it was a Media Day my guess is they had a school project as Media. I was asked a few questions too.

Yay! i had me some fun today taking pictues and generally getting the smell of hyperflo and burnt rubber re-familiarised! couple of points:
- Was it just me or did the vauxhalls of Giovanardi and Jordan pack up for a while?
- Mr Vaulkhard didn't look too impressed, managing a lap before coming back in and the bonnet going up again :(
- Did one of the sunshine integra's engine give up? sounded a little sick then one was towwed back
- Good to see Micky out and about, i know he's still aiming to be in the championship at somepoint this year!
- fairly impressed with the pace of Johnson in what is a "Ye Olde Car", something like .3 off mr George
Hope everyone else had fun and was warmer than me! lol :p

They only had one and it did eventually get towed back after briefly causing a red flag.

The school children's atendance is something the BTCC has done for a number of years, it's all part of involving the local community.
Usually on a friday of a race weekend a local school is invited along to meet the drivers, sit in the cars etc. it can be frustrating, especially after the 20th time of answering the same question or repeating " don't touch ANY of the buttons!!" But,IMHO it's a good thing, making friends in the local community is important, you only have to look at Croft to see locals onside is good.
I can appreciate a "die hard" fans point of veiw, of not being able to get close, but you did have some pretty exclusive access today.

I had a great day.
top of the list - meeting up with friends of course. Micky, Nick and Tom all working hard to get out and sooner rather than later I hope.
Catching up with some old friends like Martin Johnson. That was great and for his first time in a touring car and first time out in a car for sometime I thought he did really really well.
I think I am going to enjoy this year

What do you mean by recently? I've been going for 14 years, only missing one or two.
