Really? Will be quick lap times for the CART cars then!

thommo_fan
2nd Feb 2003, 10:13 PM
about 30 second laps they reckon, very quick

King Cleland
2nd Feb 2003, 10:15 PM
Great for spectators then! :)

we won't have to wait about 30 seconds for a car to come past.
there will just be one continuous line of cars coming by.

There were talks of changing padock hill bend for saftey reasons but this was dismissed I think.

King Cleland

Do not change it! They would be crazy if they did!

I thought they were going to do something to the run off area or something.

King Cleland
3rd Feb 2003, 09:39 PM
Well.... that might be sensible!

thommo_fan

yeah, they are extending the gravel traps at certain parts of the circuit. trouble is this will mean the spectators are further away from the action.:(

Better safe than sorry I spose.

Last time I was at Paddock was in 1999, when Muller did his amazing pass at Paddock..... Shame they are moving it back!

the run off area is alright for every other championship, so why not CART.
i doubt their entry speed into paddock will be much different to a formula renault or F3 car, or will it?

King Cleland

The CART cars can be quicker than F1 cars can't they? Their acceleartion could be huge..... not a big follower of CART though, so I am not sure...

thommo_fan

CART cars are faster in a straight line then F1 cars, but i don't think their cornering speed is faster then F1 because F1 cars are better aerodyamicly.
plus the CART engines produce 100+bhp less then F1.

King Cleland
5th Feb 2003, 12:12 AM
Their acceleartion is bound to be much quicker than a BTCC/F3 car anyway!

thommo_fan
5th Feb 2003, 12:22 AM
i'd be surprised if it was much more then an F3 car, but acceleration isn't really as big a factor as the cornering speed.

King Cleland
5th Feb 2003, 12:25 AM
Well yes... acceleration off the start!

thommo_fan
5th Feb 2003, 12:35 AM
what do u mean KC.
they don't keep their foot planted going through paddock, they will be braking hard.
hence cornering speed is a bigger factor then acceleration.

King Cleland
5th Feb 2003, 12:37 AM
Acceleration towards the first corner.... also they will be aerodynamically better than the F3/BTCC cars, of course they will!!!!

King Cleland
5th Feb 2003, 12:38 AM
it is still a factor!

I didn't say it was the main factor!

thommo_fan
5th Feb 2003, 12:48 AM
if a driver is going to go off at paddock then it will most likely be at the apex of the corner.

King Cleland
5th Feb 2003, 12:53 AM
Most likely, but then the unlikely accidents do happen and they have got to protect for that!

thommo_fan
5th Feb 2003, 04:19 AM
yeah but if they did that for every type of accident there would be 50 feet high fences and the spectators would be 100 feet away from the track..

thats why on the back of tickets it says motorsport can be dangerous

I think it's more something that CART have asked be done rather than something which HAS to be done for them to race there.

They are not extending the gravel. They will take it away and replace it with tarmac, which will act as a run off.

Ah, that makes more sense. Stop the car digging in and rolling over.

What effect will that have for other types of car? Saloons etc will have different problems/need different things if they'd go off there.

the run off area at copse at silverstone has been tarmaced too.

but i know CART boss chris pook said they would need to be extended.

by extending the tarmac, it might actually help them to stay out of the kitty litter and so prevent delays for recovery. not sure if they'll have a small raised portion to mark the edge of the proper track and the start of the extension. having watched the cart safety crews at the rock directing the local marshals, expect to see faster clean up times than you're used to at british circuits.

After May 5, the gravel will be put back for other events e.g. World Superbikes and the 2nd BTCC event in the Summer.
