The talk of manufacturers in the BTCC got me wondering, so I decided to e-mail Fords motorsport media relations (if they dont know then who will?)
I got a very detailed and constructive reply, which I have pasted below.
"What exactly is the BTCC? "
I think that says it all.

suprise suprise.
If Ford ever return to the BTCC I will eat my hat.
Mind you, when you walk into dixons these days and ask to look at a camcorder, they think your talking about something in spanish! So maybe the jobsworth the other end of your internet connection is just put there to deal with Ford and its rally efforts etc.

Wasn't there some talk about a diesel Focus for 2004? Or will that go the same way as the TMSR Lexuses...

I think that was more of a rumor than anything. With the new ETCC rules, I dont think they would also change the diesel thing aswell...

Ford have said if the BTCC fitted in with their plans sometime in the future then they'd be there.
Think their boss also mentioned that if diesels were allowed they'd also have to consider as diesels are not to be underestimated!!

It's a myth that there rubbish, think this came about because they happen to be the best selling cars around so everybody assumes they must be cheap and nasty.
Let me assure you now, if we had Ford back in the BTCC, the series would be stronger competition wise and popularity wise. As there a huge manufacturer it's inevitable the smaller makes would be out to beat them.
Same applies to BMW..;)

Ford is a manufacturer the BTCC NEEDS to have. Ford would bring so many new people to watch the series, especially with its WRC and F1 connections.

Conversely, what if Ford and BMW were seen to be beaten by the likes of Proton or the Indie teams?

Those aren't Ford's anymore Les! ;) Called New Hollands nowadays and I'm pretty sure a big Italian car manufacturer owns them, whose exploits include F1 and the ETCC with one of the makes they own...;)
If Proton were to beat them one race, then the ballast would sort it out for the next, either that or they'd find a loophole to throw more money at to make their cars faster!

that's right - been New Holland for quite a few years now.

Depends who you emailed. If it was Ford's corporate media contracts then they are mostly US based and deal with F1, WRC, NASCAR and NASCAR Trucks. Not surprising they have no idea what the BTCC is.

He fathers a son who races in the Formula Renault UK Championship - Matthew Wilson. Not much you can draw from that, I'm afraid.

I think it translates as "I hope the Mondeo will be in Touring cars."

oh right - not very likely though
if vauxhall enter with the new vectra it might give ford an incentive, but thats about all.
focus is more the size of the current cars but we know ford wants to 'focus' the focus on rallying!
