anyone on here recall this driver, the same Mike Smith who used to be a big TV celeb.? Is it me or was he a really dirty driver at times.?I jujst found an old tape from 88/89 and he seemed to pull some very dodgy moves on people. Proof I guess what many of us get upset about nowadays has been happening for a lot longer than we think!

Ah Mr Smith!!!!
No he wasn't 'dirty driver'. He just made silly mistakes as do some of the current BTCC drivers.
Unfortunatley if he was involved in a incident, he would have got the blame, even when it wasn't his fault!
Where have I heard that before? :D

I used to watch alot of the races on Saturday Grandstand with Smitty in his mk3 Escort and later in his Sierra, he never struck me as being a dirty driver.

You're right - he was a Radio 1 DJ. He was a mate of Rob Gravett who was in Touring cars at the time and got involved himself. I think the best way to descibe him would be................ enthusiastic ;). (Actually he was pretty good).

Mike raced before then, he won the Willhire 24 hr race. He and Rob formed the Trakstar team together, but lost their major sponsor partway through the season leaving barely enough money to run one car. Rob continued but it was only down to getting wins and Ford paying them prize money for the wins that meant Rob could finish and went on to win the championship.
Mike was/is also a good mate of Noel Edmunds.

from what can remember, Mike Smith was "tagged" as a wild driver by his collegues, a la Patrick Watts in the 90's and when he was involved in an accident, whether his fault or not, he would get the blame. I am not saying patrick watts was a wild driver though ,just that he got the blame for accidents from other drivers too, before I get told off by Patrick Watts fans
