It seems there is another wave of second generation drivers on the march towards the top of motorsport. We've had the most famous examples in the form of the Hills, Villeneuves, Rosbergs and Piquets. Now there are a number of young hot-shoes intent on following in their fathers footsteps.
We already have 16 yr old Kevin Magnussen, son of Jan, who raced in the Formula Renault Eurocup last season and is stepping up to F3 this year. Josh Hill, son of Damon, is third generation and will be starting his second season of Formula Ford in 2010. Jos Verstappen's son, Max, won on his European karting debut in KF3 at the weekend. Then we have two young men who are sons of Rallying legends and have decided that circuit racing is much more to their liking. Tom Blomqvist, son of Stig, will be racing for Fortec in Formula Renault this year and has already proved his blinding pace in pre-season testing. Then there is Carlos Sainz Jr who won on his debut in the World Karting Championship and is so highly rated that Red Bull have already signed him up to their young driver development programme. Finally and most exciting of all, we may see Schumacher v Hakkinen all over again. Ten year old Mick Schumacher has currently been racing at his Dad's karting track in Kerpen for a couple of seasons now and is beginning to show some real pace, while Hugo Hakkinen has taken to a kart like a duck to water and is preparing for his first season competing in Finland. It seems it definitely is all in the genes.
