Some may have seen the FB group called 'Petrol Prices' but I thought I'd share it with the forum anyway.

The price of oil is as low as it has been for a while, the oil companies have simply jacked their prices up and the government will not do anything as they rake in extra VAT for every increase.

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it

We are hitting 114.9 a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying 1.50 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... ..

THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference . If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 90p a LITRE RANGE

It's easy to make this happen. Just join this group and get all your FB friends to join or forward as an email to everyone in your address book, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e.. boycott BP and Esso:D

Not this old chestnut again. Do a little research into how the petrol industry works.

Tesco get most of their supplies from Esso, Sainsbury get most of theirs from BP, but in practice all the supermarket buy raw product from many suppliers.

Boycotting Esso and buying from Tesco is like becoming saying you should become a vegetarian and eat at McDonalds instead.

I just copy & pasted what the Facebook group says, it's not like I wrote it so I'll have to decline you instruction to research the petrol industry cause I have better things to do :D

It all come from the sameplace anyway, But Supermarket fuel does not have Aditives in it like BP or Shell so it makes no odds they win anyway.

The only way it will work is if no one fills their cars up for a very long time...

We all know thats not going to happen cause this country is Spineless and has lost its bottle, in 2000 the tanker drivers went on strike and that had some inpact as most service stations ran out of fuel.

This email/post/facebook group has been going round for about ten years now with different Oil companies pasted into the relevant parts. So much so that its now not even accurate as Bp and Esso aren't one company! As others have said its rather pointless, the big thing that has an impact on prices is tax and the government are still wanting to put that up rather than down. :(

Oh yeah I totally agree with all your statements, if any of these theories actually worked then we would have done them by now.

Agreed, luckily I was out of the country on holiday then. I don't think people are necessarily spineless, it's just that we need our cars more and more these days.

Luckily I'm not effected cos I cycle to work and travel by public transport most of the time. I only get a lift every now and again.

No the Greatest Team in the world but It beats a Skysports season ticket at any of the big 4. Sheffield Wednesday are my team, its a good laugh at the Games with the Lads, the Football useally spoils the day out though, wish we could just miss that out. ;)

I realise you didn't write this yourself. If you'd done a little research you'd be able to think for yourself and realise how flawed the proposal was rather than just quote verbatim from a group of gullible fools on Facebook. Still, your loss.

Let me just say as a night shift worker in a Petrol station. We A) dont set the prices B) Cant give discounts C) Dont get discounts ourselfs. And also Being where I am our deliveries come from Stanlow(Shell) even though we are a Texaco station. Almost all the Petrol Stations in the are be it ASDA, Tesco, Total etc all get there fuel from Stanlow. So the above stratergy wont work as others have said.

Think you'll find the tax is more like 87%. I only use Tesco 99 anyway so wouldn't have to worry about boycotting anyone of the big companies. Most of my mates buy at supermarkets as well anway.
As for not using the car, stuff that, I'd drive it regardless of the cost to be honest. As much as I like cycling, I'm not getting up at 3:00 in the morning to cycle to the gym before work, 5:00 am is early enough for me. As for public transport, that is a joke, it could take me 2 hrs to get to work (instead of 20 minutes) and at far greater expense than petrol even if it went up to £2.00 per litre.
