Jason Plato, 2007, Thruxton podium (October)

SEAT praises 'superhuman' Plato

Jason Plato has been called ‘superhuman’ by his SEAT boss Scott Dennis after narrowly missing out on the Dunlop British Touring Car Championship title despite racing with injuries at Thruxton yesterday.

Plato raced on with his hands and neck wrapped in bandages after they were badly burnt when a super car he was driving at 150mph for television burst into flames six days before the title showdown.

He shrugged off any pain to achieve two second place finishes and a fourth but it was not quite enough to prevent Vauxhall’s Fabrizio Giovanardi from taking the title by just three points.

Dennis, SEAT UK’s Motorsport Manager, said: “When Jason telephoned on Monday to inform me of his accident, in typical Jason style he said he’d had a slight drama.

“When I saw him the next day I realised it was significantly more than a slight drama.

“For him to have done what he has done at Thruxton just goes to prove that not only is he an out-and-out professional… in my book he’s the best touring car driver out there.

“We’ve come to a circuit that we know doesn’t suit our Leon, so it would have been hard enough for him to drain every last ounce of power out of the car, but to have done it in the condition he’s been in this weekend is amazing. He’s superhuman.”
