The Handy Motorsport squad made the move from the Renault UK Clio Cup to run Simon Belcher – with whom it clinched two Masters’ class titles in 2011 and 2013 – in the BTCC in 2014.
Belcher experienced two solid campaigns before handing over the reins of the Toyota Avensis to crowd favourite Rob Austin, who experienced front-wheel drive for the first time in the series in 2016.
The team endured a difficult start after taking a wrong turn in terms of the set-up of its Avensis, but following a mid-season breakthrough Austin was propelled up the order. Three podiums followed in the second half, including P2 in the Brands Hatch finale. Handy has had a strong pre-season ahead of the 2017 campaign and Austin will be looking to push on, with much potential still to unlock.
