The Handy Motorsport squad made the move from the Renault UK Clio Cup to run Simon Belcher – with whom it clinched two Masters’ class titles in 2011 and 2013 – in the BTCC in 2014.
Belcher experienced two solid campaigns before handing over the reins of the Toyota Avensis to crowd favourite Rob Austin, who experienced front-wheel drive for the first time in the series in 2016.
The team endured a difficult start after taking a wrong turn in terms of the set-up of its Avensis, but following a mid-season breakthrough Austin was propelled up the order. Three podiums followed in the second half, including P2 in the Brands Hatch finale. Handy enjoyed another strong campaign in 2017, with Austin capping things off at the Brands Hatch with a race victory.
It was announced back at Rockingham last year that the outfit would be running an Alfa Romeo Giulietta, marking the beloved brand’s hotly-anticipated return to the BTCC after a near two-decade hiatus. In pre-season the signs were good, with Austin topping the first official test session at Brands Hatch.
