EXPERTS VIEW FOR MOTORSPORT NEWS’ BTCC DRIVER OF THE YEAR

Weekly newspaper Motorsport News has this week revealed its top ten drivers of the 2020 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship – as voted for by the experts on the pit wall.

As part of the issue’s five-page review of the 27-race season, Motorsport News has polled key members from each of the 13 different teams up and down the paddock to unearth who they thought was the racer of the year. The only stipulation was that the team chiefs were not allowed to select anyone who had driven for their own squad.

The results make for interesting reading as title winner ace Ash Sutton tops the pack in the MN ranking as well as on the Tarmac.

There are some surprises too as the Laser Tools Racing Infiniti Q50 man is joined in the top 10 ranking by drivers who the team managers thought had delivered some head-turning performances in 2020.

Motorsport News editor Matt James said: “This poll has become something of a tradition in Motorsport News, and it is not just a case of us shirking our responsibility to rate the 2020 talent.

“The team personnel who have had an input into our findings are the ones who have studied every on-track session, seen the data traces and crunched the numbers. They are fully aware of the back-story of each driver too. Who is better to give us a definitive order of who shone most brightly in the season just gone?

“The opinions don’t just take into account who scored the most points: it is a forensic examination of who was performing beyond their limits during the races given the machinery at their disposal.

“It is a fascinating order – and the good thing is, MN is not held responsible if a driver’s nose is put out of joint!”

The bumper double-issue Christmas special Motorsport News is out on Thursday December 17 and also includes an interview with champion Sutton, the full top 10 BTCC drivers list and a host of other features.
