SIR FRANK WILLIAMS 1942-2021

The British Touring Car Championship family was very sad to hear of the death of Sir Frank Williams, a legend of the sport and a man who enjoyed a raft of success in the BTCC.

Former racer Williams was an entrepreneur in the truest sense, building up his own race preparations firm and parts supply business to become a major player and, at the same time, focusing on his ambitions to create his own racing team.

Once that was achieved, Williams Grand Prix Engineering became the benchmark in Formula 1 in the 1980s with some smart technical solutions and a desire to succeed that was unmatched.

With victory in the top-flight already assured, WGPE looked to expand its operations. Along with Renault, it entered the British Touring Car Championship in 1995 with the Renault Laguna model.

Within three meetings of that initial season, the team was a winner with headline driver Alain Menu going on to claim the crown in 1997. Williams set new benchmarks in terms of operations and professionalism which helped push the BTCC forward and those are philosophies and attitudes that have been copied by many who have graced the entry list since.

British Touring Car Championship chief executive Alan Gow said: “Frank was such a fierce competitor, which showed through right from the beginning of his team’s BTCC assault.

“He knew exactly the resources needed to be successful, brought a new level to the Championship and was entirely honourable in all my dealings with him.  Rest in peace Sir Frank.”

On behalf of all BTCC teams, drivers, partners and supporters TOCA send our thoughts and condolences to the Williams family.

A switch to Toyota Gazoo Racing UK proved to be one of the major headlines during the off-season as Rory Butcher secured the first manufacturer drive in his BTCC career.

Consistency initially proved hard to come by for the Scotsman as he acclimatised to new machinery, but his first win impressively came at Oulton Park in July.

A near perfect weekend at Silverstone towards the end of the campaign, where he claimed pole position and two wins, helped Butcher to take seventh in the overall standings.

Having scored points in 25 of the 30 rounds, the 25-year-old ended the year eighth in the Drivers’ battle, with nearly a hundred points more than he’s secured in any other season.

DRIVER SPOTLIGHT: DAN LLOYD

The Official BTCC website’s Driver Spotlight feature is getting underway from today (24 November), as each driver who took part in the 2021 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship gets their moment in the spotlight with key stats and some of our favourite images from the year for fans to check out!

Kicking off the feature today, it’s Adrian Flux with Power Maxed Racing’s Dan Lloyd.

In his first full campaign in the series, Lloyd enjoyed a strong run, ending the year just shy of the top ten in the Drivers’ Standings, with an impressive four rostrum finishes in the final three events.

Qualifying proved a strength for the 29-year-old, whose average position put him into the top ten over the year, despite a difficult session in the curtain raiser. Bagging P2 in Donington Park’s Top Ten Showdown marked a highlight for the Huddersfield racer, who held the position in the opener to cross the flag second.

Check out the driver fact file and image gallery of Lloyd’s 2021 campaign below!

WHO RULED QUALI IN 2021?

Today the Official BTCC website is looking at the 2021 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship's top qualifiers throughout the campaign, crunching the numbers to find out whose average qualifying position puts them on top.

The man heading the way in 2021 is Team BMW driver Colin Turkington with an average of P6. The two-time Goodyear Wingfoot Award winner bagged a pair of pole positions and consistently qualified in the top 15 throughout the year including six top six finishes.

BTC Racing's Josh Cook holds the second-highest spot with seven, marking the average place of any driver who didn't secure pole position throughout the season and proving that consistency is very much key within Britain's premier motorsport series.

Jack Sears Trophy winner Dan Rowbottom and 2021 Drivers' Champion Ash Sutton's average qualifying positions are tied on 7.7, while a pair of pole positions for Halfords Racing with Cataclean man Rowbottom gives him the edge over the three-time champion.

Despite only taking part in nine of the ten events on the calendar, Senna Proctor's pace in qualifying proved impressive and his appearance in the top five qualifiers throughout the season makes it three out of five for the Honda Civic Type R.

TITLE TRIUMPH TOPS 'GREAT YEAR' FOR LASER TOOLS RACING

Brands Hatch’s nail-biting Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship finale set the scene for ultimate triumph for Laser Tools Racing almost four weeks ago (23/24 October) as the West Lothian-based squad secured a quartet of titles to end the 2021 campaign on a high.

Leading light Ash Sutton headed to the Kent circuit topping the Drivers’ Standings and with the aim to retain his championship crown for a second consecutive year, having adopted a more measured and consistent approach to the title battle in 2021, but with four rivals in mathematical contention, the pressure was on.

Qualifying on Saturday saw Sutton and team-mate Aiden Moffat start strong, but as the front-wheel drive machinery came to the fore, the pair dropped out of the top ten. The final ten minutes of the session became a sprint to move up the order and the team threw everything at it, putting Sutton into P6 and Moffat seventh on the grid, while stablemate Carl Boardley took 27th during a difficult session.

Sunday’s opening race saw Sutton take a tactical approach, working to keep his points advantage intact by maintaining his sixth place starting position throughout the encounter, despite title rival Colin Turkington on his heels.

Moffat, who had lost a place to the BMW driver on the opening lap, held eighth to the flag, while Boardley made his way up to P22, as the 45-year-old struggled to find the optimum set up.

It was a second sixth-place finish in race two, as the 27-year-old once again took a measured approach, securing enough points to provisionally claim the Drivers’ title in the penultimate round of the 2021 campaign.

A less fortunate affair for Moffat saw the Scotsman involved in a skirmish with another driver which caused damage sufficient to send him to the pit lane. Returning to the action with a new wheel and tyre, the #16 Infiniti would take 22nd at the end of the 18-lap contest.

Boardley would fair better during the encounter, moving up from 22nd on the grid into the points with 15th – his ninth points-finish of the campaign.

The gloves came off in race three as the reverse grid draw put Sutton’s #1 machine fourth on the grid. The Hertfordshire racer rocketed off the line, taking second place before the end of the opening tour, and would steal the lead from Team BMW’s Stephen Jelley on lap three, holding the position from an attacking Dan Rowbottom for the rest of the contest.

His team-mates would endure a more challenging race, with Boardley forced to retire on the opening lap, while Moffat was into the points by lap two before dropping down the order. A four-lap safety car period hampered the 25-year-old’s recovery from the back of the pack, but he began his attack on lap ten, working his way up to 18th.

Sutton’s race three triumph marked his fifth victory of the season and also his 50th career podium in Britain’s premier motorsport series, as he continues his pursuit of record-breaking glory.

The squad’s efforts throughout the campaign were rewarded with Teams’ and Independent Teams’ honours, as well as Sutton’s Drivers’ and Independents’ crowns.

“We’ve worked so hard and changed how we approach a year and it’s paid off massively,” said Sutton. “To have done it with one race to spare is absolutely phenomenal. I’ve had a fantastic crew behind me all year, and fantastic sponsors with Laser Tools and it just couldn’t have been any better.

“This year’s racing has been very close. But we’ve got a very well-engineered car in terms of carrying this ballast and that’s played a big part.

“Obviously, race three was so good and the best way to send [the campaign] off. I could have the handcuffs off and do what I wanted to do, and it was absolutely phenomenal!”

“What a season it has been,” said Boardley. “I want to thank all of my sponsors for making this possible for me, and a huge thank you Laser Tools Racing for all the hard work of everyone on the team.”

“A great year for me and Laser Tools Racing,” said Moffat. “It was a shame to end the season like that after finishing eighth in race one. It wasn’t the weekend we wanted and we had a lot of pace that we didn’t get to make the most of, but it’s been a great year and I can’t thank the team and sponsors enough.”

OLIPHANT HOLDING HEAD HIGH AFTER TOUGH SEASON

Tom Oliphant drew his 2021 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship challenge to a close with a valiant double-points performance at Brands Hatch last month (23/24 October) after a mixed campaign in which highlights included a second career victory amongst three other rostrum finishes for the 31-year-old.

On what proved to be a rollercoaster race day, Oliphant also helped Team BMW clinch a record sixth consecutive Manufacturers’/Constructors’ Championship title.

Having worked tirelessly to understand the cause of his hampered results at Donington Park between events, the WSR driver enjoyed a competitive showing in both free practice sessions on Saturday at the Kent circuit, but in what proved to be another record-breaking battle for pole position, Oliphant wound up just three-tenths of a second away from the top spot and would start the opening race of finals day from 14th on the grid.

The initial encounter around the 2.43-mile venue saw the rear-wheel drive ace begin his race day fightback with a charging drive to 11th, making a number of moves as he hounded the back of Ollie Jackson’s Ford Focus.

Unfortunately, race two was over before it had really begun as he found himself entangled in a multi-car incident on the opening lap which caused race-ending damage to his BMW 330i M Sport.

Following a sensational repair job by the team, Oliphant made the start of the final race of the season with moments to spare and duly rewarded them with an impressive drive.

Starting from the back of the grid, the two-time race winner carved his way up the order in what was a fraught reverse grid encounter to finish 15th.

“It wasn’t the way I would have liked to have ended the season, but I had fun and the car was mega,” reflected Oliphant. “We were unlucky, but that has been the story of our year.

“Race one went to plan in terms of making progress, but we sadly were in the wrong place at the wrong time in the second race. Given the amount of damage we suffered, the team did a mega job to turn the car around, so it was nice to reward them with some more points.

“I’m really pleased that BMW won the Manufacturers’/Constructors’ Championship for the sixth year in a row. It was fantastic to have played a part in that with some big points scores.

“Overall, it has been somewhat of a frustrating season. We’ve had a couple of great weekends but the rest of them have been tough. I’ve picked up four trophies though and held my head high throughout.”
