Rookie racer Simpson unveils 2016 contender

Matt Simpson has taken the wraps off his brand new Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship challenger at the pre-season Autosport International show at Birmingham’s NEC today (14 January).

The former European Hot Rod Champion will be making his BTCC bow in 2016 in a Simpson Race Exhausts-branded Honda Civic Type R, fielded by front-running independent outfit Speedworks Motorsport. The 34-year-old admits he is eager to get out on-track to begin the learning curve.

“It’s exciting to be unveiling my first British Touring Car,” he enthused, “and the sheer interest and buzz around the Dunlop stand at Autosport International blew me away – to be racing in such a popular and prestigious championship is a huge deal for me.

“I can’t wait to get started, but at the same time, I’m keeping my feet firmly on the ground. There are so many quick and ultra-experienced drivers out there on the grid, and I’m aware I have a lot to learn. If we can make consistent progress over the course of the season, then it will have been a good rookie year.”

WIX keen to continue giant-killing exploits

WIX Racing is ready and revved-up to take on the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship’s big guns in 2016, after unveiling Adam Morgan’s new challenger at the Autosport International show today (14 January) at Birmingham’s NEC.

Morgan was one of the championship’s leading lights last year, claiming his first ‘on the road’ victory at Thruxton and adding to it with a clutch of rostrums en route to seventh spot in the final standings and third in the Independents’ Trophy behind the wheel of his striking Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

As he enters his fifth campaign in Britain’s premier motor sport series, the 27-year-old is palpably eager to continue his progression up the order.

“After such a strong year in 2015, I really can’t wait to go racing again!” Morgan enthused. “Our A-Class will be entering its third season in the BTCC and the development work we have carried out should make it a regular podium finisher and contender for race wins.

“Although WIX Racing is only a small, family-run team, we have consistently punched above our weight and hopefully David will continue to slay Goliath on a regular basis in 2016!”

Eurotech 'hyped' about new Civic Type R

Eurotech Racing is eagerly anticipating the start of the 2016 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship campaign, and after making substantial investments to its expanded stable of new Honda Civic Type Rs over the winter, the independent squad is confident its upgraded package will drive it further up the grid.

The first of the three new Civic Type Rs was shaken down at Donington Park in December, leaving the team pleased with its performance. What’s more, the sleek new bodywork was a huge hit on social media, with Type R fans from all over the world going crazy for the first images of the new car.

The second car is now also complete, whilst number three will be ready to take to the track shortly. The team is looking forward to starting a full testing schedule immediately after the livery unveil at Autosport International today (14 January).

Eurotech is remaining tight-lipped about the identity of its third driver, stating that no deal has yet been finalised but the squad has confirmed it is in negotiations with several very capable competitors with the ability to push the team forward in 2016 alongside the returning Martin Depper and Jeff Smith line-up.

Team principal Smith said: “All of us at Eurotech are very excited about the forthcoming BTCC campaign. The expansion of the team to run three cars in 2016 has made for an extremely busy winter, and all the boys have worked their socks off to keep us on schedule. Martin and I are both massively hyped about doing battle in the awesome new Civic Type R! We think it looks great – and if it’s as quick as it looks, then we should be onto a winner.”

RENAULT UK CLIO CUP & BTCC EXTEND PARTNERSHIP

The Renault UK Clio Cup is today proud to confirm it will continue to race at the Dunlop British Touring Car Championship’s high-profile events through to the end of 2019 at least after signing a new minimum three-year deal with BTCC organiser TOCA.

Renault UK has run its championships alongside the BTCC every year since 1992. Its UK Clio Cup is very much viewed as the leading category to compete in for drivers aspiring to careers in touring cars – in fact half of 2015’s BTCC grid comprised drivers with Renaultsport categories on their CV…

The BTCC is by far Britain’s biggest motor racing championship. Its events attract huge trackside crowds (average 38,200 people) plus 145 hours of live free-to-air television coverage per season in the UK on the ITV4/ITV4HD channels – this includes the UK Clio Cup action.

FAN-FAVOURITE AUSTIN JOINS HANDY MOTORSPORT

Inimitable touring car race winner and ‘fan-favourite’ Rob Austin has this morning, Thursday, 14th January, been confirmed as Handy Motorsport’s new driver for the 2016 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season.

The hugely exciting announcement from Swindon-based Handy Motorsport, made on the opening day of the annual Autosport International Show at Birmingham NEC, is a real “game changer” for the outfit according to Handy’s team principal Simon Belcher.

Austin, who has spent the past five seasons in the BTCC at the wheel of an Audi A4 with his eponymous Rob Austin Racing outfit, will pilot a brand new Toyota Avensis during the coming campaign – marking a return to front-wheel drive for the 34-year-old Pershore racer for the first time in almost a decade.

“I’m really excited to be joining forces with Handy Motorsport”, said Austin, “The new car is a lot more suited to the [championship] regulations than my Audis were and through this deal we’re combining the best bits of both teams. I think we should be able to do a really good job with the new Toyota and spring some surprises.

“There will be some adapting back to front-wheel drive but, as Colin Turkington [two-time BTCC Champion] has proved, if you can drive you can drive. It’s bloody hard work organising the money, running a team, sorting the sponsorship and driving as well, so I’m looking forward to focusing on the thing I do best rather than spreading myself so thin. This really is a perfect opportunity.”

One of the other key aspects of the deal sees personnel from RAR joining the existing Handy Motorsport structure, which is already supported from an engineering perspective by successful BTCC squad Speedworks Motorsport.

“It goes without saying, we are absolutely ecstatic to announce Rob as our new driver for 2016”, said elated Handy team boss Belcher, who himself hopes to continue in the BTCC as a driver this year in the team’s original Avensis, “He’s a quality driver, a proven race winner in touring cars, and brings a huge amount of experience to the team.

“We’ve been discussing the possibility of working together for a while and, thanks to a new sponsor package, we’ve been able to put this programme together. We’re at the start of a very exciting period in the team’s BTCC story and very much looking forward to making big strides this season.”

Austin, of course, needs no introduction to fans of the BTCC and UK motorsport in general. Initially plying his trade in single-seaters in the Formula Renault UK Championship, where he was 1999 Vice-Champion, and British Formula 3, where he claimed a maiden victory in 2003, he switched to closed wheel competition in 2007 in the SEAT Cupra Championship and Ginetta G20 series.

After dalliances in the British GT Championship and Ginetta G50 Cup, Austin joined the BTCC in 2011 with a family-run Audi A4 and he became a podium finisher in his maiden season. Going on to claim a breakthrough first victory two years later, he won again in 2014.

Across his BTCC career to date, Austin has secured a total of 11 podiums, one pole position and four fastest laps. Away from the track, the Worcestershire driver is famous for his appearance in the Ron Howard movie Rush in which he portrayed former Formula 1 racer Brett Lunger.

“I really want to be part of the whole project with Handy Motorsport, I want to contribute to the whole success of the team”, added Austin, “There is so much potential and Simon [Belcher] has some very big plans for the team going forward. These are exciting times…”

Alongside the newly launched Handy Motorsport Toyota Avensis on the main Dunlop BTCC stand in Hall 6 at Birmingham’s NEC, Austin and Belcher will be meeting and greeting fans across all four days of the hugely popular show.

The team has an additional presence on Stand 6505 in Hall 6 where the 2015 Avensis is on display. Autograph sessions are scheduled to take place at 13.30 each afternoon where fans will be able to obtain pictures with their heroes ahead of the season. Austin and Belcher will also be interviewed live on the Dunlop BTCC stage at 12.00 on Sunday, 17th January, during the final day of the show.

“We always look forward to the Autosport show and, unsurprisingly, we have more than ever over the last few weeks”, said Belcher, “The BTCC has such a huge following, as does Rob, and it’s a real treat getting to meet so many fans. Jack Goff signs for Team IHG® Rewards Club

BTCC young gun joins West Surrey Racing-run outfit  

Team IHG® Rewards Club is delighted to confirm the signing of talented young driver Jack Goff for this season’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

The proven race-winner has enjoyed a strong start to his relatively short BTCC career so far, with a number of podiums and a maiden victory at Snetterton last season being the outstanding highlights.

Team IHG® Rewards Club has put its faith in Goff as it too looks to build on a successful bow in Britain’s toughest motor racing championship. The squad experienced victory on two occasions in 2015 as it now looks to mount a serious championship challenge in only its second season of BTCC action.

Goff gets his championship chance behind the wheel of a West Surrey Racing built, prepared and run BMW 125i M Sport, which will be 'officially' unveiled in Team IHG® Rewards Club colours at the hugely popular Autosport International later today (14 January).

The High Wycombe racer will undertake a number of media duties at the event in Birmingham, as well as meeting some of the thousands of dedicated BTCC fans in attendance, before the serious business gets underway over the coming weeks.

Goff and WSR – under the expert guidance of its experienced Team Principal Dick Bennetts – will undergo an extensive testing programme ahead of the official BTCC Season Launch event on 22 March. The 24-year-old will then make his competitive debut for Team IHG® Rewards Club at the opening 2016 BTCC event at Brands Hatch in early April.

Speedworks shape up for most successful season

Speedworks Motorsport has welcomed new sponsor REIS by unveiling an interim livery on its Toyota Avensis at the Autosport International show today (14 January), prior to revealing its full 2016 colour scheme at the Season Launch at Donington Park on 22 March.

Having announced earlier this week that it has retained the services of highly-rated young gun Tom Ingram for a third consecutive campaign in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, the tie-up with motor sport insurance specialists REIS is another feather in Speedworks' cap.

Following a breakthrough season in 2015 that yielded a brace of podium finishes, team principal Christian Dick is quietly confident of another successful challenge.

"It's great to be able to confirm Tom and our new partner REIS so early in the year," he acknowledged. "We've said all along that Tom was our number one choice as a driver after what we achieved together in 2015, and putting a deal together so soon means we can get out and do some really productive testing before the season starts.

"With its expertise in the motor sport and automotive industry, REIS is a natural fit and a brand that shares our ethos and objectives from its professionalism to its attention to detail. We're delighted to have them on-board."

The car will be on display on the REIS stand (No. 6575) throughout the show.

Speedworks target glory after re-signing Ingram

Buoyed by a breakthrough season in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship last year, Speedworks Motorsport has set its sights on its maiden victory and Independents’ glory after re-signinghighly-rated young gun Tom Ingram for the 2016 campaign.

Up against a supremely high calibre of opposition in 2015, Speedworks claimed an impressive 23 points finishes from 30 starts – 18 of them inside the top ten. Behind the wheel of his heavily-revised Toyota Avensis, at Rockingham in September, Ingram duelled energetically for the lead with two-time championJason Plato, with the runner-up spoils representing the Northwich, Cheshire-based outfit’s first podium in its 132nd start.

Bringing the crowd to its feet, the mesmerising scrap was voted the most exciting of the season, and just over a month later, the KX Akademy graduate returned to the rostrum in the Brands Hatch GP finale with another outstanding second place, earning Speedworks ninth position amongst the 19 protagonists in the Teams’ standings and fourth spot out of 15 in the Independent Teams’ Trophy. Ingram wound up 13th out of 39 in the overall classification and an excellent fifth out of 29 in the Independents’ Trophy.

Having secured the 22-year-old British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) SuperStar’s signature for another year, a comprehensive pre-season testing programme is now planned – a luxury the team has hitherto been unable to afford.

Before that, however, the Avensis will be exhibited in an interim colour scheme at the Autosport International show at Birmingham’s NEC from 14-17 January, prior to a full livery unveil at the traditional Season Launch at DoningtonPark on 22 March. Speedworks’ second car – a Honda Civic Type R for BTCC newcomer Matt Simpson – will similarly be on display on the Dunlop stand. Ahead of his squad’s sixth season in the championship, team principal Christian Dick is in bullish mood.

“2015 was our most successful campaign to-date in the BTCC, but we’re far from content to sit on our laurels and we need to make sure we continue pushing if we want to keep on moving forward and accomplish our objectives,” he asserted.

“A shortage of pre-season testing – due to lack of budget or deals coming together too late – has been an Achilles’ heel of ours over the past couple of years and left us somewhat on the back foot, but hopefully 2016 will be a different story and the aim is to get up-to-speed nice and early so we can really hit the ground running. There are a lot of new parts to get to gripswith, so the more track time, the better.

“With Geoff Kingston at the helm on the engineering side, we took a sizeable step forward in 2015, and there is still plenty of untapped potential in the Avensis. We resolved the tyre degradation issues over a race distance that had hampered us so much the previous year, to the extent where the car is now stronger on Sundays than Saturdays.

“As soon as we left Brands Hatch in October, attentions turned towards this year and all the boys have put in a colossal effort over the winter to ensure we go into 2016 in the best shape we can possibly be. I’m so proud of every single one of them. There is such a close bond inside this team and everybody pulls together – we go about our business with minimal fuss, keep our heads down and work hard and that is reflected in the results.

“Of course, none of that would be achievable without having the right pedaller inside the cockpit, and in that respect, we have absolutely no concerns. Jason Plato described Tom as world-class after their battle at Rockingham last year, and I would not disagree – the kid is a champion in-waiting in my eyes.

“He has grown tremendously as a driver since joining the BTCC two years ago, and his form at the end of last season was superb. Tom’s raw speed has never been in doubt, and his racecraft is now also amongst the best in the business – as Rockingham proved, he’s not afraid of getting stuck in and going wheel-to-wheel with anybody else on the grid. Reputations don’t faze him at all.

“He shares our approach and he shares our goals, so keeping him on-board this year was extremely high on our ‘to-do’ list. Although we received interest from a number of other drivers, Tom was always our number one choice and we are delighted to have retained his services. He’s ready to take the next step and we’re ready to take the next step, so from our point of view, the start of the season really can’t come soon enough!

“We have made it very clear from the outset that weare not here to make up the numbers; we are here to win – races and ultimately championships. We regard 2016 as the next phase of that journey, and havingestablished ourselves as consistent top ten contenders last year, we now need to be targeting consistent podiums and our first race victory. If we can dothat, a tilt at the Independents’ trophy won’t be too far away.”

It is little secret that his eye-catching sophomore season made Ingram the subject of several advances, meaning Speedworks had to head off a number ofrival teams’ overtures to hang onto its talented protégé.

The MSA Academy member will be entering his third consecutive BTCC campaign with the plucky independent operation in 2016, and is adamant that he is in ‘absolutely the right place’ and that he and the team can be ‘a force to be reckoned with’ this year.

“For me, it was a complete no-brainer to stay with Speedworks,” Ingram explained. “The team’s work ethic is second-to-none; everybody is ultra-professional, but at the same time they know how to have fun, which is important – this is hardly a cheap sport, so you need to make sure you’re enjoying it or else you might as well not bother.

“The second half of last year was hugely positive for us, and it was encouraging to see all the development that we had put in paying off. Our performance just got better and better, which shone through in the results with two podiums from the last three race weekends. From our point of view, the season ended too soon because we were on a roll!

“That has left us with a lot of unfinished business, which is massively exciting. I really feel at home at Speedworks – part of the family – and personally-speaking, I’m now a much stronger driver, from my knowledge and understanding of the car to my relationship with the engineers. We’re such a tight-knit unit, and although I did have discussions with other teams, having come so far together, this was no time to walk away. I’m in absolutely the right place for 2016.

“We only really scratched the surface in 2015 of what we can achieve with this car – although the first half obviously wasn’t what we had been hoping for, we dug deep and turned it around in style. There is a lot more to come from the Avensis yet, and I genuinely believe we can be a force to be reckoned with this year.”

Subaru enters BTCC with Team BMR

Jason Plato and Colin Turkington to spearhead title assault

Renowned manufacturer Subaru will enter the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship after striking a sensational three-year deal with Team BMR.

The squad will run the all-new Subaru Levorg Sports Tourer in this year’s series, with both Jason Plato and Colin Turkington spearheading the Japanese marque’s title assault.

“We’re very excited to have teamed up with BMR from the 2016 Championship – the first time a Subaru has competed in BTCC,” said Paul Tunnicliffe, Managing Director for Subaru UK & Ireland. "Although the Levorg features the Subaru famed all-wheel drive system, the car can be easily developed to compete with rear-wheel drive in order to comply with the BTCC regulations… so we can’t wait to see how it goes against very established competition.”

Subaru’s maiden foray into Britain’s biggest motor racing series will see Team BMR contest for Manufacturers’ Championship honours for the first time in its short career, something that Team Principal Warren Scott is hugely honoured by.

“I am extremely delighted that Team BMR are to become a Manufacturer team in only our fourth year of competing in the BTCC,” he enthused. “I have had aspirations of becoming a race-winning team with factory support from the very beginning and I am immensely proud of the team for giving Subaru the confidence to partner with BMR.”

In Plato and Turkington the outfit already boasts drivers with well over 100 victories and four drivers’ titles between them, suggesting the new Levorg Sports Tourer will be in extremely safe hands during its maiden BTCC campaign.

“Part of my role when joining BMR was to help secure a manufacturer deal,” said Plato. “The iconic Subaru brand has always been right at the top of my wish list. Obviously it goes without saying that I am very excited about our future together and I'm confident that BMR will produce a fantastic package for me to fight for the Championship. This really is exciting times for us all... I can't wait for the season to begin.”

Turkington, who won his two titles in rear-wheel-drive machinery, was equally excited by the tie-up between Subaru and Team BMR.

“Continuing with Team BMR for the 2016 season was an easy decision for me and represents a great opportunity to build on our strong maiden campaign,” he said. “I can't wait to get started with the development of the new Subaru Levorg BTCC race car and I'm more motivated than ever to win. This announcement is huge news for the Championship and equally for me.”

Under the guidance of Chief Designer Carl Faux, Team BMR - supported by the global technical resources of Subaru - will develop the new car and its famed four-cylinder boxer engine to full BTCC specification.

“It’s an honour to be leading not only Team BMR’s first ‘clean-sheet’ car design and build, but to be able to do this with Subaru’s new Levorg model is a real privilege,” confirmed Faux. “Engineering challenges is what the project presents – a new car, new engine and all the new generation TOCA components require a methodical approach. Establishing a three-year programme means we can focus on getting the basics right early before developing the package further over the following years.”

With the start of the season just two months away the team is working tirelessly to ready its cars for a testing programmes ahead of the official reveal at the BTCC Season Launch at Donington Park on 22 March. The squad will also confirm its full and final line-up over the coming weeks.

Subaru’s BTCC debut will then take place at Brands Hatch in early April for the opening rounds of the 2016 Championship, which Series Director Alan Gow believes will mark the start of a prosperous partnership.

“We are delighted to welcome another manufacturer to the BTCC and particularly one with such an incredible motor sport heritage,” commented Gow. “Subaru is an iconic brand with a huge following and its introduction to the BTCC is certain to excite our many fans both in the UK and around the world. No doubt Team BMR with its hugely experienced and talented driver line-up will make for a very successful partnership.”
