DAVID ADDISON’S ‘MOONLIGHTING’ 2015: EPISODE ONE

If you buy any of those A-Z of sports car-type books, you know, the ones in most bargain bookshops that your Aunt buys you at Christmas, you will find pages about MG. MGBs most likely.

The company’s heritage is about sports cars and yet it is a brand that has a strong connection with the BTCC and is being talked about once again as boasting a potential champion on its driving force. After Jason Plato’s oh-so-close bids to win the crown, the spotlight falls on Andrew Jordan this year as he aims to add to his 2013 title.

Wind the clock back to the 1980s and the multi-marque days of Group A, and MGs hits the grid. Group A was a huge success that had a European Championship, comprising long-distance races, and many national series, such as the BTCC. Austin Rover homologated the Rover Vitesse for Group A and then did the same to a terribly humble little car, favoured by librarians everywhere: the Metro. We’d already had a one-make championship for MG Metros and then out came the turbo, a 1300cc pocket rocket that lined up against the Alfa Romeo GTV6s in Class B, for up to 2500cc cars. And to make the car even quicker, Austin Rover Group installed top rally ace Tony Pond behind the wheel of one and Patrick Watts, then an up and coming one-make ace, in t’other. The cars were quick, if unreliable to begin with, and started to win regularly over the next 12 months before ARG pulled out of the championship: a long story best told another time…

Colin Pearcy bought one of the cars and won his class on occasion in 1987, not a huge achievement as entries that year were thinner than an anaemic stick insect, but it was the arrival of the ZS that started to give the MG name overall wins as Colin Turkington, Rob Collard, Warren Hughes and Anthony Reid starred. Fast-forward to 2012 and the MG6 hit the track, since when Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff have been race winners. But things change… Jason moves on to pastures as yet unannounced and Sam jumps to the good ship rear wheel drive. So Andrew Jordan heads the attack as MG looks for a first drivers’ title.

The Jordan/Triple Eight re-marriage comes after a Vauxhall flirtation in which AJ was the third driver and struggled as a touring car rookie (essentially) against the likes of Fabrizio Giovanardi, then at his peak. But this is a different Andrew Jordan, a wiser one, a more confident one, one capable of leading the Triple Eight/MG attack to the crown. Can he do it? Yes. But as Jason discovered, winning this championship isn’t easy and AJ goes up against Plato (in his fill in the blank!), Colin Turkington (in his insert car name here!), Honda regulars Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal, plus Tordoff and Andy Priaulx in their BMWs. And don’t rule out Volkswagen and Motorbase Ford drivers from being in the title mix.

Point being, Jordan won’t find it easy but has a very good chance. He knows about front-wheel drive and the team, but this is a new car to him and a new power unit to learn about as well. But this is someone who can leap into a rallycross supercar and work magic so he shouldn’t find it a massive problem. The other difference is, of course, in life in the garage. No longer is he in the family team, where he was one of the lads, now he is a the lead driver at a different squad. There will be some movement of engineers to go with him, including Andy Brown who guided him last year, and father Mike will be in the background as well. In some respects it will be a very different feel, in others it will be the same as at Eurotech. It will be fascinating to see how the whole set up gels.

And Andrew’s team change is one of a number of intriguing aspects to the season ahead. OK, we may not be able to leap up and down about seven champions on the grid, but even with the entry list still taking shape, you have to admit it is looking pretty darn good, eh?

There are still a few pieces of the jigsaw to fit into place yet but it is making a pretty good picture. You are all coming to the media day aren’t you? You’ll be sorry if you don’t….

MG and Triple Eight take Manufacturer’s crown at action-packed Brands finale

The final round of the 2014 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship delivered three enticing encounters, and the MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save team secured a 1-2 finish in the first race that enabled the Greatworth-based squad to scoop the prized Manufacturer’s/Constructor’s title for MG, confirmed by double points scores in the remaining two races.

Winning the Manufacturer’s/Constructor’s title is the highlight of the three-year relationship between 23 BTCC Champions Triple Eight and resurgent British car manufacturer, MG, which has seen the combination take an impressive 22 victories, 54 podiums, 16 pole-positions, and eighteen fastest laps.

After a strong qualifying 1-2 the day before, Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff duly converted their one-lap pace into an important race 1-2, their third of 2014, but it wasn’t to be plain-sailing. After heavy rain overnight, Plato was bogged down on the greasy side of the track and it was team-mate Tordoff and Championship rival Colin Turkington who powered past into Paddock Hill Bend for the first time. Plato’s MG got the better of the BMW before the lap was over and the first of several safety car periods bunched up the pack.

MG’s rivals Honda were amongst the cars involved in the first corner fracas that prompted the deployment of the safety car; both factory-supported Civic Tourers retired in unrelated incidents at Paddock Hill Bend. Matt Neal was taken to hospital for precautionary x-rays and wouldn’t play a part in the final two races.

On the eighth lap of race one Tordoff complied with the team’s request to let a pacey Plato through, an effort that would prove somewhat in vain once Turkington fended off the challenge of Mat Jackson and established himself in the required third place, with the point for the fastest lap of the race cementing the BMW driver’s Championship win.

Following the double DNF for the Hondas and news spreading of Neal sitting out the remaining two races, it became apparent that potential penalties aside, Triple Eight and MG had actually sealed the Manufacturer’s/Constructor’s title before the start of the second race.

While overcast conditions threatened rain, the second race of the day played out in dry conditions, as both Plato and Tordoff set off from their front-row starts in rapid fashion.

Another first lap incident required a safety car and one lap after the restart Plato tried to pass Turkington up the inside into Paddock Hill Bend. The BMW made contact the MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save car as the pair approached the apex of the corner, sending the new Champion into the barriers, immediately ending his race.

Multiple race winner Mat Jackson sneaked ahead of Plato and into the race lead, before losing control of his Ford at Hawthorns and exiting the race handing the lead back to the #99 MG. Turkington’s team-mate Rob Collard seized the opportunity to pass Plato after Jackson’s off, before Adam Morgan did similar a few laps later. When Morgan forced his Mercedes up the inside of the BMW for the race lead at turn one, Plato followed, and re-took second place. Morgan’s lead was short-lived however, and the WIX Racing driver careered off track at Sheene, re-joining in second place.

Plato benefited from his rival’s unforced error and duly took the flag for his second win of the day, leading home Morgan and Tordoff. The Yorkshireman delivered yet another steely drive after putting in a good defensive display from a feisty Andrew Jordan, before battling past Collard to take third.

Shortly before race three, Plato was banished to the back of the grid and given three penalty points for the incident in the previous race with the newly-crowned BTCC Champion. Due to it being Plato’s third ‘strike’ of the year, a ten-place grid drop was extended to the last place on the 28-car grid. A further protest from Turkington’s West Surrey Racing team saw Plato given a 20-second time penalty, which dropped the #99 MG to thirteenth place and promoted Tordoff to second, for his third double-podium weekend of 2014.

Ahead of the third race of the day and the final race of the 2014 BTCC season, the heavens erupted and a mighty downpour washed over the 2.43 mile GP circuit as darkness also set in. Plato elected to start from the pit lane and avoid a potential grid-incident, while Tordoff started from ninth.

Following yet another first lap crash, the safety car was deployed and gave the MG duo a chance to assess the conditions at a more sedate pace; Sam was ninth and Jason 22nd. The treacherous conditions and low light levelled the field and the BMWs were not as omni-present as in previous races, with the MGs scything up the order. By lap nine Sam was fourth and Jason was inside the top ten in tenth place, having stuck a move on the new BTCC Champion that caused him to celebrate on the team radio. In the final laps Plato passed Morgan, Nick Foster, and Tom Ingram to finish seventh, with Tordoff taking the flag in fourth after a combative drive with Jackson.

The final weekend of the 2014 season sees Plato finish second in the championship 35 points adrift of Turkington and 50 clear of Honda's Gordon Shedden. Tordoff improved to seventh overall in the standings, 22 off Collard and 48 ahead of Neal. MG / Triple Eight finished 95 points ahead of Honda / Team Dynamics to take the Manufacturer's / Constructor's title. In the HiQ Teams Championship, MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save secured second with 643 points.

Guy Jones, Sales and Marketing Director, MG:
“It’s a hugely proud and exciting day for the MG brand to win the 2014 BTCC Manufacturer’s title. It’s a great day for the brand and our fans, to see MG where it should be, at the top of a premium motorsport series. We’re delighted with the programme so far, especially given the short time that Triple Eight had to get the car ready for the grid in 2012; I think it was beyond everyone’s expectations to win a race on our first weekend with the MG6, and that’s testimony to Ian Harrison and the team at Triple Eight. With a brand name like MG that is synonymous with motorsport, we wanted to pitch up on day one and be competitive. Obviously the goal over the three years was to win some silverware, so it’s a dream come true today to win a Championship trophy, and be part of a winning team. For us we needed to put the MG brand back on the map, so we had to raise awareness that the brand was back. Despite a rich heritage of motorsport success, it was all in the past, so we had to do something with a modern era car. The beauty of the BTCC for us is two-fold; it’s television-led media coverage, the car you see on track is very similar to the car we sell in a showroom. The spirit of the car you buy is there on TV, racing in front of millions, and then you have around 40,000 fans per event that we can interact with and show the car to in the bare metal. It’s really helped build the brand back up and beating a notable brand and prestigious team like Honda Team Dynamics who been here for a long time before us, it’s an amazing result and where MG should be.”

Jason Plato, driver #99:
“What a finale weekend! Nail-biting and exciting for all, especially the fans. It’s a fantastic result, I’m dead chuffed, and it’s been a great effort from Triple Eight and MG. Just reward for three years hard work? I think so. As a team, we’ve done a brilliant job. To come from not having a shell six weeks before the first race in 2012 to where we are last year and this year, we’ve been the dominant force and, if you take Colin out of the equation, I was fifty points in the lead going into the last weekend, and that should have been the case last year. Let’s all come back next year with a level-playing field and see who is where.”

Sam Tordoff, driver #88
“It’s been a good day. We got the job done with regard to the manufacturer’s title; I had some good results personally and obviously did what I had to do in race one. All in all three great results and I’ve very happy with the end of the season. We’ve been really quick this year, and had a win and two pole-positions, but suffered reliability issues that have hampered our opportunity to get more results and success. In that respect it hasn’t been ideal because my title aspirations haven’t been fulfilled, but I’ve learnt a hell of a lot and I know I have the pace to run at the front regularly.”

Honda Yuasa Racing relishing new challenge at Oulton Park

Teams and drivers will undertake a new challenge at Oulton Park in 2014, as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship switches to racing the full International configuration of the Cheshire track for the first time since 1996 this weekend (7-8 June).

Two Honda Civic Tourer machines, piloted by Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden, wade into the ever-intense BTCC battle well armed having already scored two wins and total of nine podiums so far this season.

Last time out at Thruxton both Neal and Shedden visited the rostrum, with Neal taking second in race one and fourth in race two. Shedden went even better with third in the opening race backed up by a second victory of the season in the following encounter.

In the five week break between the last round at Thruxton and the upcoming Oulton Park event ‘Flash’ and Neal have been busy with their Civic Tourers, deciding to find out how much of their huge collection of trophies they could squeeze into a road-going version of the BTCC race car. Click here to see the video and find out the final figure…

Along with Alain Menu, Neal is one of only two drivers to have ever raced a BTCC car around the International Oulton Park layout, and his experience could pay dividends as the cars stretch their legs over the longer ribbon of tarmac.

“People have described Oulton Park as a mini Nürburgring Nordschleife because it’s just such a challenge,” said the triple BTCC champ. “I’ve had mixed fortunes there in the past, but the first team I ever raced for was based in Rochdale, so it was my home test circuit when I was cutting my teeth in circuit racing and I covered a lot of miles round there which have left me with some fond memories.

“I’m looking forward to returning, and it’s nice that I’ll be a bit lighter going into qualifying after what happened in race three at Thruxton. Going back to the International Circuit means we’ll have another couple of corners and braking zones where we can exploit the Civic Tourer’s chassis, too.

“The BTCC is so close at the moment that every last bit counts – we’re not looking for tenths-of-a-second anymore, we’re looking for hundredths. We’re still working on this car, but its handling is improving all the time and I’m confident we turned a bit of a corner with it during the Thruxton weekend, which hopefully will translate across to the remainder of the season. There’s still plenty left to play for.”

Shedden is the man on a mission in the BTCC – he’s currently second in the overall drivers’ standings and looking to close the gap to current leader Andrew Jordan. Having already made a better start to his campaign than he did in 2013 when he came to within seven points of the title, things are looking good for the Scotsman.

Shedden said: “Oulton Park is invariably one of the best weekends of the year in terms of its atmosphere and the number of fans that come along. It’s a great track, too, and 2014 will be the first time most of the drivers on the grid have raced on the full layout. That makes for a different challenge and another unknown to throw into the mix.

“We’ve tried a lot out on the Civic Tourer; some of those ideas have worked whilst others haven’t. We still need to extract a little bit more performance, but we’ve been pretty strong round Oulton in the past and even with the ballast, I’d still expect us to be well inside the top ten.

“We’ve had a great start to the season and now we need to keep on consistently racking up the points. Historically, my championship bids have been built on terrible starts followed by massive comebacks. It’s nice to be so close to the front at this early stage of proceedings – and that can only bode well for the rest of the year.”

The team completed positive pre-season testing at Oulton Park, and team manager Peter Crolla is delighted with the progress being made with the Honda Civic Tourer. He said: “Thruxton was a good weekend for us, coming away with a solid haul of points and a win which was fantastic for the morale and confidence of everybody inside the team. That means we travel to Oulton Park with high hopes. We have set the bar fairly high in the opening three meetings of the year, and now we need to maintain that level.

“It’s so close in the BTCC this year that consistently scoring points is more important than ever, but we obviously still want to win races too and at the end of the day, you can’t score any greater points than with a victory.

“We tested at Oulton pre-season and completed some good mileage; being on the International circuit again does change your approach compared with previous years, but we are happy with where the car is right now. It’s going to be a tough weekend on the brakes and Oulton Park weekends traditionally enjoy fairly hot weather, so it will be a stern test for both the car and the drivers. It could be a successful hunting-ground for us.”

Oulton Park is one of the best attended race meetings of the year, and with an amazing grid of current BTCC cars supported by a blast from the past in the form of the Super Touring Car Championship, it’s sure to be another stunning weekend of racing. Live coverage of the racing starts at 11:15 on ITV4, or to see the action in person, click here to buy your tickets.
