BTCC to recognise top performing engineer

The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship has introduced a new annual award to its prestigious portfolio.

The ‘BTCC Engineer of the Year’ award will recognise the achievement of the Chief Engineer behind the Championship winning car.

An impressive carbon fibre, machined alloy and laser engraved trophy is being designed, produced and donated by BTCC technical partner, S.P.A. Design, and will be awarded to the inaugural winner at the TOCA Awards which will be held at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire on 26 November.

BTCC Series Director, Alan Gow, said: “I'm delighted to introduce this new award for 2016 and beyond. Whilst drivers and teams are recognised through the extensive titles on offer in the BTCC, I felt it was right to also acknowledge the great work of the top performing chief engineer. Motor racing isn’t just about the driver, it's a team sport and the chief engineer's role is absolutely key in providing a winning car.

“The BTCC, as the pinnacle of British motor sport, boasts engineers of the highest calibre. This award will hopefully go to also serve as an inspiration to those involved and motivate them to continue developing and innovating further. We look forward to awarding the ‘BTCC Engineer Of The Year’ - and, given how incredibly closely fought the BTCC is this year, whoever wins this award will have richly deserved it.”

Dunlop #ForeverForward: Turkington on top at Silverstone

Silverline Subaru BMR Racing's double champion Colin Turkington took the latest Dunlop #ForeverForward honours with 26 points gained over the Silverstone weekend – the penultimate event on the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship calendar.

Team JCT600 with GardX's Rob Collard retains the overall lead – some 30 points clear of nearest rival Handy Motorsport man Rob Austin. With Collard's Saturday form not his strongest suit – by his own admission – and his eye for a pass come Sunday's races, he'll be difficult to surpass as the competition draws towards its conclusion.

Top of the Independents' tally was Team BKR's Mark Howard, who enjoyed what was undoubtedly the best race weekend to date of his maiden BTCC campaign.

The Leicestershire racer scythed through the field in race one from 30th on the grid to finish 16th, only missing out on a first haul of points by one spot. Gaining 14 places in a single round is no mean feat given the spread of the top 22 drivers on the grid was just one second over a single lap of the Silverstone National circuit, as evidenced by Saturday's close-run qualifying session.

Race two would prove the only cloud to a day of silver linings for the 'Silver Fox Racing' man. He once again produced a spirited drive in steering his BKR VW CC through the pack in race three, eventually climbing from 28th to an encouraging 19th position.

Turkington's round-topping performance largely came down to the pre-race one third strike penalty that saw him demoted to P29 on the grid. He wasted no time in tearing through the field in the Team BMR-backed Subaru Levorg, amassing a stunning total of 21 positions gained.

With only the Brands Hatch finale remaining, the results and standings are as follows – Rob Collard holds a commanding lead at the top of the overall standings:

Dunlop #ForeverForward drivers of the weekend

1 Colin Turkington 26
2 Josh Cook 24
3 Mark Howard 23

Dunlop #ForeverForward overall standings

1 Rob Collard 147
2 Rob Austin 117
3 Martin Depper 114

Olympian Emms' motor sport education

World champion athlete and silver medal Olympian Gail Emms MBE made her first visit to a motor sport paddock at this past weekend's Dunlop MSA Touring Car Championship event from Silverstone, as she looks to encourage young people into sport and develop a knowledge of what makes racing drivers tick.

The former Badminton star racked up a World Championship win in 2006, European Championship victories in 2004 and 2006, Commonwealth Games golds in 2002 and 2006 as well as her Olympic silver medal in Athens back in 2004, so she knows a thing or two about what mentality is required when it comes to competing at the very top.

Emms got herself in and amongst all of the action in the paddock, speaking to drivers and teams up and down the pit lane and was left impressed by her maiden motor racing experience.

"Even though I’m new to motor sport, I’ve loved it. Sport brings people together and it’s an emotional rollercoaster," said Emms. "We love the highs and hate the lows but it makes you want to strive to achieve. Seeing it first hand, it’s exceeding my expectations.

"Part of me was saying ‘I’m a sports purist’ but being here seeing the whole team environment has just been absolutely incredible. Looking around and seeing the enjoyment on people’s faces, where else would you possibly want to be?

"What’s fascinating to me standing right in the pitlane and seeing the team behind you. I used to have maybe five or six people cheering me on – the physios and the coaches – but look at all the mechanics and engineers. They’ve all got a real passion to see someone go out in the car and reach their full potential. It’s fantastic.

"I think this is the start of my motor sport education basically. It’s funny how motor sports and some other sports don’t really tend to mix. Since I’ve retired, I’ve realised the similarities between an athlete, whether it’s a badminton player or athletics or if you’re a racing driver – what you go through in sport is pretty much exactly the same.

"There’s that expectation, the adrenaline and I’m massively interested in that transition from being in an elite sport environment to what happens out of it. I’m here to get an idea of what this world is about and to try and understand it a bit more.

Having retired from badminton, Emms hope to use the experience gained at the top of her game to encourage people to follow their passion, inspire kids into sport and more girls into motor sport.

"I love the psychology and the mindset of being an athlete but I also want to inspire kids to want to be the best at something. If they’ve got passion for something, they should go for it. I’d also love there to be more girls in motor sport as well. I’m keeping my eye out and looking, as a female who achieved in sport, at being able to say 'no matter your passion, then go for it'.

"Professional sport is all about those marginal gains. You’re looking for those one percents to try and be the best basically. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t have that real drive and desire to want to get better and better. You learn after each match or each race and think about where you can improve."

Matt Neal – 600 up

Matt Neal made his 600th Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship start this past weekend at Silverstone and spoke to btcc.net on his incredible milestone before all the action unfolded.

Eight drivers set for BTCC title showdown

Sam Tordoff holds standings advantage after Silverstone action

A thrilling win for reigning champion Gordon Shedden rounded out the action at Silverstone on Sunday (18 September), setting up an incredible eight-driver showdown for the 2016 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

An unprecedented number of drivers will challenge for the title on finals day at Brands Hatch in two weeks’ time, with Team JCT600 with GardX’s Sam Tordoff currently holding the advantage by 11 points.

The drama at Silverstone commenced in typically frenetic fashion with Tom Ingram claiming the opener, following a post-race exclusion for Ash Sutton and Josh Cook due to a technical infringement.

Both MG Racing RCIB Insurance drivers had to fight back from minor setbacks off the line, with Sutton losing P1 to Ingram and Cook being demoted down to fourth by Andrew Jordan’s Pirtek Racing Ford Focus.

Slight contact between Cook and Jordan followed on lap four and the MG6 was back through into third.

Sutton was by Ingram for the lead at the start of lap eight and Cook was soon joining them in the scrap. Cook got into Ingram’s Toyota at Maggotts four tours later and despite a valiant effort from the Speedworks man, it was the MG pairing that assumed control for the remainder of the race.

Post-race, however, both MGs were excluded from the result due to their rear wings being outside of the permitted tolerance. This handed victory to Ingram, although MG Racing RCIB Insurance has appealed the Cook decision, which will be heard at a later date. Subsequently, Jordan and Handy Motorsport’s Rob Austin inherited the remaining podium positions.

Motorbase Performance driver Jordan kept his championship chances alive with victory in race two, after fending off the attentions of Adam Morgan and Speedworks Motorsport’s Ingram.

The 2013 champion started on the front row and initially hounded Ingram’s Toyota Avensis, before storming down the inside going into Becketts on lap seven.

Morgan’s WIX Racing Mercedes nipped into second as Ingram’s pace faded, but he wasn’t able to trouble Jordan’s Pirtek-backed Ford for the win.

West Surrey Racing’s Rob Collard blasted his BMW 125i M Sport into the lead off the line in the final race, as his rear-wheel drive machine launched past Shedden’s Honda Civic Type R on the run down to turn one.

Shedden would not be denied, however, as the Halfords Yuasa Racing man produced a stunning move on the second lap. As Collard braked into Maggotts, Shedden stormed around the outside and back into the lead. He went on to extend his advantage and claim his fourth win of the season.

Motorbase’s Mat Jackson relegated Collard further down the order on lap three, but the latter was able to stem the flow thereafter and make the podium.

With just one event and three highly-anticipated BTCC races remaining this season, it is Tordoff leading the standings from the Honda duo of Shedden and Matt Neal. Incredibly Collard, Jackson, Jordan plus the Subarus of Colin Turkington and Jason Plato all remain in contention to claim the most coveted prize in British motor sport. Just 37 points separate the top seven with 67 still on offer at Brands Hatch.

West Surrey Racing/BMW continues to lead the Manufacturers’/Constructors’ standings, whilst Team JCT600 with GardX recaptured top spot in the Teams’ table.

Jordan cemented his position at the head of the Independents Drivers’ classification, and Motorbase Performance holds an unassailable points lead in the Independents Teams’ order.

Michael Epps was the Jack Sears Trophy winner at Silverstone, although Sutton is still in charge of the category’s proceedings.

Rounds 28, 29 and 30 of the 2016 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship will take place at the legendary Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit on 1/2 October.

Championship Leader

Sam Tordoff said: “From the off here we’ve had problems, so to come away having extended our lead from five points to 11 is quite frankly ridiculous! For me, the pressure is off as nobody expected this at the start of the year. I’m picking points up as we go along and seeing how we go from there really. It could be difficult at Brands with the ballast – it’s undulating, so we have to be wary. There are a lot of corners and stop-starts, though, which should suit the BMW.

“There are seven or eight guys taking points off each other out there as well as off of me, so we’ll see what happens. Regarding the competition, Honda has been up there for many years as the benchmark. I think the biggest threat comes from them – they’re experienced guys who have been there and done it. My team-mate’s there in the mirrors too, and you can never discount the Fords. It’s going to be a strange two weeks. I’ll try to keep myself sharp with BMW in the meantime, and Brands Hatch GP is my favourite circuit. I’m looking forward to it. I’ll go there the same way I did this weekend. I’ll prepare, do the simulator work and walk the track three times if needs be. Hopefully we’ll qualify well, which will be really important, and we’ll go from there.”

Silverstone Race Winners

Tom Ingram said: “Obviously it wasn’t the way we’d have liked to have won the race and it would have been nice to cross the finish line first on the road, but a win is still a win and we had the speed to run right at the front throughout. If it hadn’t been for Josh Cook’s robust move, I think we could have taken the fight back to Ash Sutton again, but we got the result in the end anyway, and it proved we are right back on the pace after recent events.”

Andrew Jordan said: “That was hard work. I think I’ve done myself a bit of an injury celebrating! We needed that. I’ve read in places that I’ve lost my mojo, well I’ll just remind them that I haven’t at all. After the safety car, I was trying to go as fast as I could to get a gap. I wasn’t worried about the tyres. I was controlling them well. I’ve perfected a technique to look after them from back in 2013. I could see Adam Morgan was using his fronts a bit harder. We’re back in the number one spot where we should be.”

Gordon Shedden said: “The rear-wheel drive cars made a good start and I had Mat Jackson on the inside as well. I thought ‘oh no’, but my car was right on it – there was an amazing amount of grip. I got my head down and made it back past Mat and then I nipped back past Rob Collard too. I could have gone another ten laps after the chequered flag, as I was absolutely loving it. We needed that so much, it was great. It’s going to be an amazing weekend next time out at Brands Hatch. Without a shadow of a doubt, I’ll be doing everything I can to retain my title. I think the last person to do it was Fabrizio Giovanardi back in ‘07/08. I’ve been on the back foot all season really and I’ve never given up. I’m delighted to go to Brands with a chance – that’s all I ask for.”

Shedden win concludes thrilling Silverstone action

Reigning Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Champion Gordon Shedden has set-up an incredible title showdown at Brands Hatch after the Scotsman claimed victory in a thrilling finale at Silverstone.

Team JCT600 with GardX driver Rob Collard blasted his BMW into the lead off the line, as his rear-wheel drive machine launched by Shedden's Honda Civic on the run down to turn one.

Shedden would not be denied, however, as the Halfords Yuasa Racing man produced a stunning move on the second tour. As Collard braked into Maggotts, Shedden stormed down the outside and back into the lead. He went on to extend his advantage and claim his fourth win of the season.

Mat Jackson relegated Collard further down the order on lap three, but the latter was able to stem the flow thereafter.

The Subarus of Colin Turkington and Jason Plato got the better of Tom Ingram's Toyota in the battle for fourth, but two of the three would suffer late heartache. A mechanical issue stopped Ingram's Toyota in its tracks, while Plato limped home in 12th with a puncture. So it was Turkington who claimed fourth to keep his title credentials firmly intact.

Championship challengers Matt Neal and Sam Tordoff were next in the order, after the former had carved his way through the order with a number of stellar moves through Maggotts and Becketts. When Neal's Honda cruised onto the back of Tordoff's BMW there was little resistance from the WSR man, as the points leader determined that discretion was the better part of valour.

The MGs of Ash Sutton and Josh Cook bounced back from their earlier disappointment to score top ten finishes, as they sandwiched the duelling Andrew Jordan and Aiden Moffat in seventh and tenth respectively.

The impressive Rob Austin and Adam Morgan were denied good results after a puncture curtailed the Handy Motorsport Toyota while the WIX Racing man was handed a drive through penalty for exceeding track limits.

Tordoff leads the standings from the Honda duo of Shedden and Neal, but incredibly the title will be contested by an unprecedented eight drivers on the final day of the season at Brands Hatch in two weeks time. Collard, Jackson, Jordan, Turkington and Plato are the other drivers all in contention to claim the most coveted prize in British motor sport.

Andrew Jordan claims race two victory

Motorbase Performance driver Andrew Jordan kept his championship chances alive with a victory in race two at Silverstone, after fending off the attentions from Adam Morgan and Tom Ingram.

The 2013 champion started on the front row and hounded Ingram’s Toyota Avensis initially, before Jordan stormed down the inside going into the Becketts hairpin on lap seven.

Morgan's WIX Racing Mercedes nipped into second as Ingram's pace faded on the soft Dunlop SportMaxx soft tyre, but he wasn't able to trouble Jordan's Pirtek-backed Ford for the win.

"It was hard work," said Jordan. "I think I’ve done myself a bit of an injury celebrating! We needed that. I’ve read in places that I’ve lost my mojo, well I’ll just say ‘do one’, I haven’t at all. After the safety car I was just trying to go as fast as I could to get a gap. I wasn’t worried about the tyres.

"I was controlling them well. I’ve perfected a technique to look after them from back in 2013. I could see Adam (Morgan) was using his fronts a bit harder. We’re back in the number one spot where we should be."

Morgan completed a comfortable second place finish, ahead of an equally delighted Ingram.

"It’s amazing at this point in the championship to get a result like that," enthused Morgan. "We’re looking to climb our way up the table with a good points haul here.

"Hats off to Andy though, on the soft tyres – I just couldn’t keep up. I must thank all the guys in yellow and black though for their hard work to get us back into the mix. I’m well happy with it though."

"I’m more than happy with that – I’m really pleased," replied Ingram. "With the soft tyre and a lot of weight I can’t have any complaints. Andy pulled off a stonking move. Once Adam went through too I knew they’d be gone so I concentrated on holding P3. I had Jake Hill too watch then the Subarus. The places that they put us under pressure were down the straight down in towards Brooklands actually."

The Subaru Levorg GTs of Colin Turkington and Jason Plato shadowed Ingram's Toyota over the line, with Mat Jackson bringing home his newly liveried Ford Focus in sixth place, having scythed his way through from 17th on the grid.

Rob Collard was on the softer tyres and snatched seventh place in the WSR BMW 125i M Sport, but he was pressured home by Gordon Shedden in the factory Honda Civic Type-R. Shedden's epic drive was further rewarded with reverse grid pole for the final contest.

Aiden Moffat and Hunter Abbott rounded out the top ten.

Tom Ingram wins after MG disqualification

Tom Ingram claimed victory in the opening Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship encounter at Silverstone after MG's Ash Sutton and Josh Cook were disqualified for a technical infringement post-race.

Both MG Racing RCIB Insurance drivers had to fightback from minor setbacks off the line with Sutton losing P1 to Ingram and Cook being demoted down to fourth by Andrew Jordan's Pirtek Racing Ford Focus.

Adam Morgan's Mercedes and Rob Austin's Toyota traded places during the early running too, as battles kicked off all the way down the order. This was highlighted particularly by three championship contenders fighting for positions outside of the points with Sam Tordoff, Rob Collard and Mat Jackson swapping paint for much of the contest.

Cook and Jordan touched through the complex on lap four and the MG6 was back through into third, and he immediately set about hauling his machine to the front-running duo.

Sutton was by Ingram for the lead at the start of lap eight and Cook was soon joining them in the scrap. Cook got into Ingram's Speedworks Toyota at Maggott's four tours later and despite a valiant defence it was the MG pairing that assumed control for the remainder of the race.

Post-race, however, both MG6s were disqualified for a technical infringement due to their the rear wings being outside of the allowed tolerance. This hands victory to Ingram, whilst both Sutton and Cook will now start the second race from the back of the grid. MG Racing RCIB Insurance have appealed the decision relating to Cook's car, but this will be heard after the conclusion of the event.

"We worked hard for this one," said Sutton prior to the disqualification. "To top race one I’m absolutely over the moon. Tom (Ingram) got a great start and broke out a bit of a gap. ‘I’ll settle for the minute,’ I thought. Then I saw an opportunity, a car width gap beside Tom, big enough for my MG. There was a little bit of contact but nothing unfair. Down to turn one we were side by side but I came out on top. We’ve got to continue the momentum."

"We had it under control but I knew the MG boys would be coming for us," claimed Ingram. "I wasn’t quite able to hold off the attack. The move was there for Ash (Sutton). It was a strong move and he saw the opportunity and took it. It was robust by Josh (Cook) too. He’ll see it his way and I’ll see it mine. We’ll both disagree on it. I’ve probably got a really mardy face on but I am really pleased with being back on our pace and back at the sharp end. I’m over the moon really."

Jordan held on to a lonely fourth ahead of Austin and Morgan, who had both enjoyed an eye catching battle throughout the 22 laps of racing. Due to the aforementioned MG decision this later became second, third and fourth in the final classification.

Jake Hill fended off the attentions from a gaggle of contenders, including Honda's multiple champions in Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden. Incredibly both Honda Civic Type Rs suffered punctures late on – Neal's following contact with Aiden Moffat's Mercedes – and Hill was eventually able to secure fifth for the Team HARD-run squad.

BKR's Aron Smith claimed sixth ahead of two stellar drivers from a couple of BTCC's big guns. Rob Collard took seventh after scything his way BMW 125i M Sport through from 25th on the grid, whilst Colin Turkington blazed a trail from the rear of the field to grab eighth for Silverline Subaru BMR Racing.
