Maximum attack

In what has been a positive start to the 2017 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, Josh Cook has tallied two best-yet finishes for Maximum Motorsport colours.

Seventh at Brands Hatch Indy was followed by fourth at Donington Park – a real source of encouragement for the upwardly-mobile Independent outfit.

Cook, a podium finisher in the BTCC, has settled into new surroundings in double-quick time and is encouraged by what he has seen so far after some hard work behind the scenes.

"We're well on our way from where we were before the start of the season," said Cook. "We had a few pre-season test days just trying to develop the car and get it a bit further towards where we knew it needed to be – that took a bit of time.

"Brands was quite a tricky one to settle into qualifying. That didn’t go to plan because of the rain and we lost out. At Donington Park though, we put everything we could into qualifying and that was a truer representation of where we could be. It put us just ahead of the Motorbase cars, which was our benchmark. We had three top ten finishes and if there was any opportunity we certainly tried to capitalise on it."

The man at the helm on the green side of the Team Parker with Maximum Motorsport garage, Stewart Lines, has been equally buoyed by the steps taken so far this season and was full of praise for the outfit's new charge.

"Everything’s good – we’ve had such a good year so far," Lines said. "It seems to be that everything we’re doing is going well. Everyone’s happy and it seems a little too good to be true at the minute! Touch wood it’ll keep going as well as it is.

"Josh hasn’t put a foot wrong at all in the last two meetings. He’s driven the car to its full potential and we’ve spent a lot of money to make sure the car would be up to standard with the new components for this season. It’s lighter, it’s faster and he’s driven the wheels off it. It’s not only driving it fast, it’s keeping out of trouble and he’s done a great job.

"We feel he’s 100% happy with the car now aside from the usual tweaks that need to be done here and there. Hopefully we’ll get a little stronger in a straight line and if a few other small things fall into place he may well have a chance of winning a race or two. The car has it in it and Josh can definitely do it – he’s got the confidence to do it and he’s not the type of driver that goes out there looking to finish behind anybody.

"I genuinely think that if we did the race given the size of our team we’d have excelled ourselves. Our performances so far illustrate that the regulations give scope for anybody to be competitive if you choose wisely in terms of what you’re going to do with the car and if you choose the right drivers.

"It isn’t just about throwing money at the job – it’s about being a bit clever about it as well. We’ve got good engineers, a good number one mechanic and a good team in there. We’ve spent where we feel we’re going to see the improvements on track. It’s working for us."

Cook lapped at last weeks Thruxton test session to gather data and track time ahead of the championship's return to Hampshire in just under a fortnight's time, reinforcing that balance and poise at speed is key to performing at Britain's fastest race circuit.

"It was definitely an FP1 type session for us during the first session here in testing – just trying to find out what the balance of the car is," continued Cook. "The test should have given us a head start for the return here.

"Thruxton's very fast. They’ve done a bit of work here again and obviously, they did a bit last year. There’s more been done at Church so it’s just about finding the differences that has made to the lap and the car. It’s a track where you’re flat out for the most part so a lot of it comes down to your straight-line speed and you need to make sure you’re comfortable with the car through the fast corners because if you ever lose any momentum it’s very difficult to get it back.

"Tyre degradation is quite a key factor here given it’s a high-speed high-load circuit. We’re going to try and find something in qualifying, working together with Stephen (Jelley) who’s fast and has been going well. It’ll be a case of trying to get a tow and losing as little as we can on any of the other cars down there."

Two in two for Eurotech's Smith

Eurotech Racing's Jeff Smith lapped fastest in this afternoon's Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship test session from Thruxton, completing a double on the day after his timesheet topper set during this morning's running.

Smith was joined by three more Honda Civic Type Rs in the top four in Gordon Shedden, Jack Goff and Matt Neal, respectively. The lead three of that quartet also lapped well inside Tom Ingram's qualifying lap record set last year around the Hampshire circuit.

"The car felt good and to be honest with you, there's still some more in it," said Smith.

"It's quite a hard thing to get around Thruxton. There's obviously a lot of high speed areas where you need stability in the car and then there's the technical areas where you need good rotation so it's hard to find that compromise between the two.

"We're fairly close. The big chunks are easy to find it's the little ones that aren't. We made quite a big change prior to session two with the intention of that being a subtle change to the car – trying to find a different way of achieving the same thing through the high speed stuff.

"I normally go pretty well around here and you have to say after that, that if I can put in a lap like that on Quali day then that'd suit us!"

Laser Tools Racing's Aiden Moffat was the first of the non-Honda runners in his Mercedes-Benz A-Class, followed by the sister Ciceley Motorsport Mercedes of Adam Morgan in sixth.

#BillyWhizz - message of support from the BTCC

The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship will show its support for British F4 driver Billy Monger with prominent #BillyWhizz signage set to adorn all 32 cars at Hampshire’s Thruxton Circuit on 6-7 May.

Title sponsor and official tyre supplier to the championship, Dunlop, has generously agreed that the message of support will take over its prime area on each BTCC car’s front number plate position, as the motor sport community continues to back Billy following his saddening accident at Donington Park.

Series Director Alan Gow said: "In reality there is very little we can all do to help Billy, other than to show our great support for him. So, this message of support on our cars will be seen by literally millions of viewers around the world and hopefully may even bring a little smile to his face. Everyone is right behind you Billy!"

A crowdfunding site has been set up to raise funds for Billy and his family, to contribute towards the specialist treatments that will be needed for his recovery. To donate to this fund please visit: http://bit.ly/2pggxoJ.

Smith tops first session at Thruxton

Two-thirds of the grid were out on track for the opening Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship session of the TOCA Test from Thruxton, with Jeff Smith's Eurotech Honda Civic Type R setting the early pace.

Smith held the mantle for much of the session and extended his advantage at the top of the times with a strong late run, averaging more than 110mph around the Hampshire speed bowl.

"It's not necessarily an expectation to be top of the times but it's a belief there that you can go and do it," said Smith. "Sometimes you deliver it and sometimes you don't.

"The guys have done a lot of work over the winter on chassis setup and we've learned a few more things over winter testing too. You want to just make one change to make things come right but you have to go and do three or four things to make it all work at the same time. We're really getting our heads around it I think.

"It's up there among the quickest circuits in Europe so any time you go around Thruxton prior to the race weekend here is very valuable time."

Ciceley Motorsport's Adam Morgan rounded out the session in second spot while Jake Hill continued his recent vein of positive form to place third. Drivers' standings leader – Speedworks Motorsport's Tom Ingram – found himself 14th with reigning champion Gordon Shedden 11th in the Halfords Yuasa Racing Honda.

Pace, however, is not the only priority straight out of the blocks here as teams and drivers look to learn as much as is possible about 2017's full complement of new RML components and Dunlop rubber ahead of the return to Hampshire for Rounds 7, 8 and 9 of the BTCC, 6-7 May.

STATEMENT: UPDATE ON THE CONDITION OF BILLY MONGER

Courtesy of British F4:

The incident that happened during the British F4 race at Donington Park on 16 April, 2017, is deeply saddening for all those involved.

Billy Monger is in a critical, but stable condition at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham where he is receiving the best medical attention possible. The medical team there are pleased that all Billy’s vital signs are showing progress and going in the right direction.

Due to the injuries sustained and despite every effort, Billy has sadly had both lower legs amputated.

Billy’s family would like to express their gratitude for the first-class medical attention given by Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and take this opportunity to thank the medical teams, marshals, extrication crews and air ambulance staff for their skilled response and hard work.

Furthermore, they would like to thank Billy’s colleagues, friends, fans and everyone who has demonstrated their affection for him over the past few days. These messages help give the great strength needed for the recovery process that lies ahead.

A crowdfunding site has been set up to raise funds for Billy and his family, to contribute towards the specialist treatments that will be needed for his recovery. To donate to this fund please visit: http://bit.ly/2pggxoJ.

The F4 community and wider motorsport world will no doubt be saddened by this news, but are asked to respect the family’s wish for privacy during this difficult time.

Moffat off the mark

Laser Tools Racing's Aiden Moffat notched a memorable maiden Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship victory at Donington Park this past weekend.

Moffat, the youngest driver ever to have entered the BTCC, has made significant progress during his time in the championship. His Round 4 performance in Leicestershire, though, will surely go down as his best drive yet.

The Scot tore away from fourth on the grid and sprinted into Redgate – right with the lead trio. By the end of the opening tour he had made it beyond the Eurotech Honda Civic Type R of Jack Goff and sliced his way into second with a great move by Rob Austin at the Old Hairpin on the second lap.

He then set about hunting down early leader Tom Ingram. The Speedworks Motorsport man had slipped by Rob Austin on the opening lap but Moffat wouldn't let the Toyota out of his sight as the pair became locked in a tussle.

Moffat's moment came on lap five as the Mercedes got the run alongside Ingram's ballast-laden Avensis. Ingram had no answer and Moffat was through as the cars ran down the Craner Curves. The Scotsman would never look back.

"It’s a very special feeling – I won’t be forgetting that moment anytime soon!" beamed Moffat. "The Laser Tools Racing car was absolutely brilliant. We had a great set-up all weekend, so I was feeling confident and knew we had the pace. It all came together nicely.

“It was a hard race because it was a case of managing the gap and looking after the tyres once I got into the lead but I felt that I had a good chance.

"I knew that Tom (Ingram) was on the harder, option tyre and that he was carrying 66 kilograms of success ballast, so I knew that I could get ahead and I saw that he was a bit unsettled through the Craner Curves.

"I made my move there as soon as I could and got away while he was defending from the pack behind. I’m tempted to stop racing for the day and go to the pub and celebrate!”

Laser Tools Racing's Team Principal, and Aiden's father, Bob Moffat said: “I knew the potential was there and after a good qualifying, Aiden was out of traffic and had more opportunities to make progress.

"He raced really well early on to get himself into the lead and then drove superbly to manage the gap and look after the tyres. It was a really mature performance and one that makes the years of hard work so worthwhile.”

Moffat ran 75 kilos of success ballast for the first time come race two and would have to run the harder option tyre in the Mercedes – combining, inevitably, to impact upon his pace.

The Flying Scotsman stood fast, however, and produced a display of defensive driving to fend off the pack for as long as possible and he ran in the leading group for the first two-thirds of the race. The circumstances caught up with him late on though and and he was shuffled to 14th – still, a points finish.

“It was hard with the weight,” explained Moffat. “The car didn’t want to stop and it didn’t want to turn! I held on for as long as I could but in the end I just couldn’t hold back the pack any longer.”

Moffat started the third race from 14th on the grid and, in trying wet conditions, soon battled his way up the order. Contact later dropped him as far as 24th following a spin but the 20-year-old fought back to a tremendous eighth place at the end of the race, picking off cars lap by lap.

“I really felt that I drove well in that third race,” said Aiden. “The car felt good and I was able to pick them off early in the race but then I was tagged and spun. I thought I was out of contention but in those conditions the car felt great and I just kept on pushing.”

Moffat takes 12th place in the overall Drivers' standings and sixth in the Independents’ competition ahead of the BTCC's trip to Hampshire's Thruxton circuit in three weeks' time.

Young guns to the fore as Tom Ingram hits the top

Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat – the youngest driver in the history of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship – scored a hugely popular breakthrough win at Donington Park on Sunday (16 April).

Tom Ingram surged to the top of the overall standings after taking his second victory of the season, whilst Team BMW’s Colin Turkington claimed the honours in the final encounter at the Leicestershire venue.

Moffat produced a magnificent performance in the opener as he stormed through from fourth on the grid.

The striking blue Mercedes-Benz diced past Jack Goff’s Eurotech Racing Honda on the opening lap, and third became second shortly afterwards as Rob Austin's Handy Motorsport Toyota was disposed of by the talented young driver.

Scotsman Moffat began hounding down early leader Ingram, who himself had made a forceful move into the lead past pole-sitter Austin on the run down to Redgate for the first time, and the two front-runners were soon locked in battle.

Moffat’s defining moment came on lap five as the Mercedes got the run alongside Ingram’s ballast-laden Avensis, which was also running the harder Dunlop SportMaxx option tyre. Ingram had no answer as Moffat blasted by on the run down through the Craner Curves, and the Laser Tools man would go on to take a comfortable victory.

Ingram was shuffled further down the order once Austin enacted his revenge on the sister Avensis, whilst Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Matt Neal eventually grabbed second after he passed both Toyotas.

Ingram then became the first double winner of the 2017 campaign, claiming a commanding race two triumph.

The Speedworks Motorsport star made his way past the Team BMW duo of Colin Turkington and Rob Collard in the early stages, before he returned the favour on Moffat by making an almost carbon copy move as his younger rival had produced in the earlier encounter.

Collard and Adrian Flux Subaru Racing’s Ashley Sutton eventually progressed to the rostrum positions, but neither could live with the pace shown by race-winner Ingram.

Double champion Turkington claimed the honours in the final race after on-the-road winner Gordon Shedden was excluded from the result for a technical infringement.

Shedden looked to have produced a classy drive amidst difficult conditions as heavy rain fell on the 1.98-mile National Circuit.

Pole-sitter Dave Newsham had initially scampered away whilst those behind squabbled for position. Shedden soon reeled in the BTC Norlin Racing Chevrolet Cruze, having already made moves on the Team Parker with Maximum Motorsport Ford Focus of Josh Cook and Turkington’s BMW.

The reigning champion blitzed around the outside of Newsham at Redgate to take the lead, and subsequently romped home to take the chequered flag. It soon became clear, however, that his Civic Type R had failed its post-race ride height checks, resulting in his exclusion from the final classification.

On reflection, it meant that the move for the win took place on lap eight as Turkington carved his way by Newsham at the final chicane.

Newsham fought valiantly for the remainder of the race as he tried to fend off a gaggle of cars. A pulsating battle saw Sutton’s Subaru nip by the Chevrolet, only for Newsham to claw his way back past on the penultimate tour.

The duo were joined by Adam Morgan’s Mercedes on the final lap, and it was three-abreast on the run down to Roberts. Morgan stunningly emerged ahead of Sutton to take second place, as Newsham narrowly missed out on a podium for the new BTC Norlin squad.

At the end of a dramatic weekend of action it’s Ingram in charge at the top of standings, with second-placed Turkington some 14 points in arrears.

BMW/WSR and its Team BMW squad lead the Manufacturers’ and Teams’ tables respectively, whilst Ingram and Speedworks Motorsport head the Independents’ points.

A top ten finish overall in the final contest helped Power Maxed Racing’s Senna Proctor to extend his advantage in the Jack Sears Trophy.

Rounds 7, 8 and 9 of the 2017 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship will take place at Thruxton in Hampshire on 6/7 May.

Aiden Moffat said: "It’s a very special feeling – I won’t be forgetting this moment anytime soon! The Laser Tools Racing car was absolutely brilliant. We’ve had a great set-up all weekend, so I was feeling confident and knew we had the pace. I might even ask my dad for a day off tomorrow but I doubt that’ll be happening! The guys gave me a brilliant car so it made my job a hell of a lot easier. It felt great out there so I just had to get my head down and drive how I know I can, and it all came together nicely to get that first win. It was great to bounce back after Brands Hatch and be at the sharp end of the field, where we know we can be consistently."

Tom Ingram said: "I’m lost for words! I knew we would stand a fighting chance but I honestly didn’t expect to win like that, from where we were on the grid and with a little bit of weight on-board. We expected it to be tough to match the pace of the BMWs, but boy, aren’t Speedworks doing a great job at the moment. They’re a proper set of boys and we’ve got one hell of a car! It was all about finding gaps early on, and whenever opportunities arose, I had to take them, put my car in there and hope for the best. Everybody keeps telling me to get points, but that gets a bit boring after a while, doesn’t it, and after sensing a win, I really wanted to try to get through and go for it. It all worked out perfectly."

Colin Turkington said: "We didn’t do anything spectacular but we did score good points. We weren’t the strongest car this weekend but we just kept it on the road and kept putting good points in the bag. The car was really good in the wet though and at Donington Park, traditionally it’s been tough for us so we’re pleased. The first start, you had to just tiptoe your way around. At the second start, I was struggling initially until the heat got into the front tyres but thereafter the pace was good. It wasn’t easy by any means. The grid is stronger than ever. Everybody is fast so it’s harder to get into the top ten in qualifying. Of course you always want to win or be on the podium but it’s just not always possible, so we're delighted with our return."

Turkington inherits victory in final race

Team BMW's Colin Turkington claimed the honours in the final Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race at Donington Park after on-the-road winner Gordon Shedden was excluded from the result for a technical infringement.

Shedden looked to have produced a classy drive amidst difficult conditions, as the reigning champion made relatively light work of four cars ahead of him despite losing a place to the Ford Focus of Josh Cook at the start. The Scotsman re-passed Cook on lap three and had lunged his Honda down the inside of Colin Turkington's BMW before the end of the same lap.

Pole-sitter Dave Newsham had initially scampered away whilst those behind squabbled for position, but Shedden soon reeled in the BTC Norlin Chevrolet Cruze and blitzed around the outside at Redgate to take the lead. He romped home to take the chequered flag but it soon became clear that his Civic Type R had failed its post-race ride height checks, resulting in his exclusion from the final result.

It meant that the move for the win took place on lap eight as Turkington carved his way past Newsham at the final chicane.

"That was incredibly tricky," said Turkington. "We were just on the limit of grip everywhere. The Craner Curves were just the biggest challenge. I enjoyed it, and I was just trying to focus on Gordon and keep the lap times consistent. I’m so happy for the Team BMW guys. They grafted hard through the night. We’d done nothing spectacular up until now this weekend – we’ve just collected a really good points haul and that’s what you’ve got to do!

Newsham fought valiantly for the remainder of the race as he tried fending off a gaggle of cars. A pulsating battle saw Ashley Sutton's Subaru nip by the Chevrolet, only for Newsham to claw his way back past on the penultimate tour. The duo were joined by Adam Morgan's Mercedes on the final lap, and it was three abreast on the down to Roberts. It was Morgan who emerged ahead of Sutton to take second place, as Newsham narrowly missed out on a podium for the new BTC Norlin squad.

Tom Ingram took fifth and with it the overall championship lead, whilst he and the Speedworks squad also top both Independents' tables.

Jack Goff came out on top of a good battle for sixth with Josh Cook, whilst race one winner Aiden Moffat brought his Laser Tools Racing Mercedes home in eighth. MG's Aron Taylor-Smith and Power Maxed Racing's Senna Proctor rounded out the top ten, with the latter also scooping the Jack Sears Trophy.
