AmDTuning.com expands for 2017 BTCC season

The AmDTuning.com team will expand to a two-car team for the 2017 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season after being granted an additional TOCA BTCC Licence (TBL) for next year.

The West Thurrock-based team recently agreed terms on a deal to acquire a second TBL, with that agreement being subject to confirmation by series organisers.

Having seen the deal ratified by championship bosses, work has now started on the build of a second Audi S3 that will be entered into the championship alongside the car of Ollie Jackson, who was confirmed in the first seat last month. Both cars will be fitted with the latest specification of RML control parts.

Talks with potential drivers are already well underway and include previous winners in the championship, with an announcement on who will partner Ollie to be made in due course.

“We made no secret of our desire to run a second car next year and are delighted that we’ve been able to conclude a deal to acquire the TBL that we needed,” team boss Shaun Hollamby said.

“As ever at this time of year, there was a lot of interest in people who wanted to run additional cars and the fact that there will be a second Audi for the full season is an indication of our desire to take our BTCC programme to the next level.

“Having already agreed a deal to re-sign Ollie last month, we’ve had a lot of interest in the second seat and are in talks with several drivers about joining us for 2017.

“Given the calibre of the those drivers and the fact that we have a very competitive package in the Audi, we are confident that we’ll be able to field a driver pairing that will give us the best possible opportunity to build on the progress we made throughout 2016.

“Alongside our new sportscar programme, there is no doubt that 2017 will be the biggest season to date for AmDTuning.com as a team, and everyone involved with the programme can’t wait to get started.”

Motorbase to field three-car BTCC squad

Reigning Independent Teams’ Champions Motorbase Performance will field an expanded three-car squad next season after securing a third TBL (TOCA licence) for its 2017 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship title assault.

Following the Kent-based outfit’s most successful season to date - which saw David Bartrum’s team commemorate its 10th Anniversary in the championship by taking top honours in both the Independent Teams and Drivers’ standings - the Team Boss confirmed that 2017 preparations are already well underway.

“The 2016 season was a great year for Motorbase Performance taking both the Independent Teams and Drivers trophies, but we’re ready to step it up a gear in 2017;” commented Bartrum. “These are really exciting times for Motorbase. We have a fantastic new title sponsor behind us as well as the backing of some of our long-standing partners and this has enabled us to push forward our plans to bring the third Focus out on track for our 2017 campaign.”

The squad’s Focus ST was one of the highest performing cars on the grid this season securing 7 wins and 7 podiums, with a further 15 Independent race wins and 21 podiums shared between the #7 and #77 Motorbase-built machines. Mat Jackson also jointly topped the table of most race wins for the season – taking 5 outright wins in the #7 Focus as well as the enviable accolade of having led the most laps during the 30 round championship.

“We’ve shown that we have one of the best packages on the grid this year and with some tweaks over the Winter, we expect the Focus to be back up there competing at the front again in 2017;” added Bartrum. “We’re talking to some great drivers at the moment and we’re working hard on putting together a title-winning squad for the new season.”

With a renewed focus on challenging for the overall BTCC crown, the Motorbase Performance team will be taking a sabbatical from GT racing with both of the team’s race winning Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 machines now up for sale. After five consecutive seasons competing in the British GT Championship  and a further three seasons in the Blancpain Endurance Series, Bartrum feels that the time is right for the team to go ‘back to its roots’ and to centre his squad’s efforts on the UK’s premier motor-racing series.

“We’ve enjoyed five fantastic years racing in the GT world – taking both the overall Driver and Team Championship crowns in the British GT Championship and podiums in the Blancpain Endurance Cup and Gulf 12 Hours;” explained Bartrum. “We’ve raced with and against some great people in that time and it’s by no means the end of sports car racing for Motorbase, but I feel that it’s the right time for us to regroup and to put all of our efforts into building on last season’s BTCC success.

“We have a new look for the whole squad and a very exciting programme in place for the season ahead. I look forward to introducing our new title sponsor to the BTCC fans in the coming weeks.”

WSR's Crown

West Surrey Racing marked its 20th anniversary in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship in fine style with the 2016 Manufacturers'/Constructors' crown heading the way of the Sunbury-on-Thames outfit.

Title success was clinched over a dramatic finale weekend at Brands Hatch, to give WSR its fifth overall championship and fourth in the past three years.

Formidable long-time rivals Honda/Team Dynamics were the early season pace-setters, leading the way until the trip to Thruxton back in May. A string of positive finishes for the BMWs over rounds seven, eight and nine of the campaign were enough to steal a march on the competition at the time, and top of the leaderboard WSR stayed – rounding out 2016 with a commanding 53-point margin over the squad in orange.

The lead fluctuated with the fortunes of each of the rival Manufacturers' drivers. Rob Collard's solid podium and points-score on home soil in Hampshire was followed by a quite stunning weekend for Team JCT600 with GardX team-mate Sam Tordoff at Oulton Park – second, first, second enough to propel him to the top of the Drivers' standings and cement WSR's credentials atop the Manufacturers'/Constructors'.

Over on the other side of the garage, Team IHG Rewards Club's Jack Goff added points to the party with an opening weekend podium, a strong Croft showing and another trip to the rostrum at Knockhill. Between Honda's early jump and mid-season, a glut of strong results from Dick Bennetts' outfit meant that Team Dynamics would have some catching up to do if they were to make inroads, with time beginning to ebb away as the campaign made its way beyond the half-way point.

Honda's Matt Neal scored perhaps the most consistently over the course of the season, always there or thereabouts but team-mate and eventual champion Gordon Shedden's finishes in the first half of 2016 opened the door for the WSR trio to steal a march – and that they did.

Each outfit had two of its racers in contention for Drivers' honours come Brands Hatch but in the end, despite Shedden's late heroics, the three BMWs brought the coveted BTCC Manufacturers'/Constructors' trophy back to Surrey with some comfort.

In terms of victories and podiums, WSR tallied four wins, nine second-placed finishes and four thirds while Honda/Team Dynamics managed nine, six and four respectively. A greater concentration of high points-scoring finishes, plus an additional driver running out of the WSR stable proved enough to swing it.

Team Principal, Dick Bennetts said: “I’m really happy for everyone at WSR to be celebrating the Manufacturers’/Constructors’ title.

“Motor racing is a real team effort and this is a deserving reward for a fantastic group of people.  We’re determined to come back even stronger in 2017."

Rob Houseman joins Laser Tools Racing

Laser Tools Racing has been busy throughout the close-season forging a stronger team to build on recent success. In a bid to push Aiden Moffat nearer to the front of the grid in qualifying and have him visit the podium more frequently next season, Laser Tools Racing has appointed BTCC stalwart Rob Houseman as team manager for 2017. Houseman, who was Team Principal of Houseman Racing, has been associated with the BTCC in many guises for many years.

Rob Houseman says: "Although I took a sabbatical in 2016, I’ve been actively watching and assessing teams' and drivers' performances throughout the year. One team in particular that has caught my eye is Laser Tools Racing. The team has progressed tremendously throughout the year and Aiden has matured into a front running driver with impressive potential. When Bob Moffat approached me to discuss my plans for 2017, I was keen to show interest in working with the team in order to help them progress further next season."

Team Principal of Laser Tools Racing Bob Moffat is also enthusiastic about the 2017 season: "2016 was a good season for us and as a team we performed well, however motorsport is a fast moving, competitive business and none more so than the BTCC. Bringing Rob Houseman in to manage the team for 2017 gives us a fresh set of eyes to look over our operational setup and a considerable knowledge that will hopefully help us find the competitive edge we are looking for. Rob is a real people person and a great communicator and will oversee the race team as well as looking after our partnerships."

Houseman will work with the team in pre-season testing and throughout the 2017 season.

Alan Gow on BTCC–Haymarket partnership

Series Director Alan Gow spoke to btcc.net following the announcement that the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship would be extending its media partnership with Haymarket Consumer Media for a further two years.

After an initial successful three-year period, this latest agreement with Autocar and other associated Haymarket Consumer Media brands guarantees expanded, extensive and in-depth media coverage of the series. Regular features, news, competitions and blogs will be published by Autocar – both in print and online – whilst the group’s video channels will host official BTCC videos alongside their own exclusive content.

Multi-platform advertising across Autocar, What Car?, Stuff and Four Four Two magazines will also be included. Furthermore, the Autocar logo will feature on every BTCC car, podium and interview backdrop during the 2017 and 2018 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship seasons.

Shedden's Hat-Trick

Once again the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship went down to the wire, with the destination of the Drivers’ crown undecided until the final round of the campaign – and, once again, Gordon Shedden was the man that wrested control of the honours right at the death.

This year undoubtedly provided one of the Scot’s toughest challenges to date. The 2016 season was as unpredictable as it was fiercely competitive, with an unprecedented 12 different drivers taking to the top step and eight heading to the finale weekend at the legendary Brands Hatch GP circuit with a shot at the main prize.

After a near-perfect opening weekend – second in qualifying and race one at Brands Hatch Indy, backed up by an opening win of the year in race two – it was a completely different story from there on in for the defending champion.

Following that encouraging trip to Kent, Shedden slipped away from the points benchmark set by Team JCT600 with GardX man Sam Tordoff. A double did-not-finish at what was one of the Scotsman’s worst meetings in recent memory at Thruxton was followed shortly afterwards by a torrid time up in North Yorkshire at Croft – his season’s low point. A 15th placed finish, 13th and then 22nd rounded off a weekend to forget and left the reigning champion 52 points adrift of table-topping Tordoff and ninth in the overall tally.

The summer break brought with it a chance to regroup and rethink and when the BTCC reconvened to race at Snetterton, Shedden was back. Pole was built upon by a podium and a win, sparking what was to be a remarkable comeback throughout the second half of the campaign.

It wasn’t just the results themselves from Norfolk that signalled that the fightback was on but the manner in which Shedden went about getting them. Race three’s victory came via a typically never-say-die drive from the Honda man, whose pursuit of leader Rob Collard came to a head on the final lap.

“Three laps from the end, I began to think I might be able to catch Collard and my car just came alive,” said Shedden. “With two laps to go, I felt sure I could have a go and that a win might be on the cards and then it all happened on the last lap, when it was bumper-to-bumper until we reached the chequered flag. It was fair racing, and I couldn’t be happier. That win put me right back in contention."

From there on in, there was never a finish outside of the top ten for ‘Flash’ as he fought tooth and nail to reel in the early-season points deficit to his rivals. Three consistent points-scores on home turf at Knockhill maintained the upward trend, followed by a third win of 2016 in the opener from Rockingham. Over that same weekend, Tordoff was forced into a pair of stunning recovery drives – fighting his way through the pack from outside the top 25 to 10th in race one before taking the victory in race two. Shedden would not be getting anything for free – all ground gained would need to be gained with a ruthlessness, and every opportunity to garner an advantage taken.

Silverstone provided such an opportunity and duly, Shedden pounced – though not without having to contend with difficulties of his own. The West Surrey Racing BMW of Tordoff ended up outside of the top ten at the chequered flag all three races from Northamptonshire. Meanwhile, Shedden battled back from a puncture in the opener to eighth and a win in the final bout of the weekend to capitalise and bring himself to within 11 points of Tordoff.

“It isn’t easy to fight your way through at Silverstone, but I got my head down in race two, opened as many doors as I could and squeezed through them all,” said Shedden. “It was exactly the kind of weekend we needed around a circuit where we had feared we might struggle.”

Heading to the finale, of the eight in contention Shedden would certainly have been among the most-fancied. His 2015 crown was won in similar circumstances, under pressure and needing to deliver. The Honda man again produced with the title then out of his hands, passing Tordoff to overhaul the long-time leader at the last – by just two points.

“It’s unbelievable – an incredible feeling,” said the triple champion. “I felt really relaxed all weekend, but even going into race three, I thought it was going to be really difficult – and it was! All year, I really stuck my neck on the line and made some bold, heart-in-the-mouth moves that were on the edge more often than not.

"After Croft back in June, it looked like we were down-and-out, but we stuck to our guns, kept plugging away and gave it absolutely everything to claw our way back. It just goes to show that every single point really does count in this championship. Winning the championship for the first time felt phenomenal, last year was a real rollercoaster ride and this year it was just a huge release of emotion.”

Epps back with Team HARD for 2017

Michael Epps will return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship grid in 2017 after signing a deal to remain with Team HARD.

Epps continues his partnership with the Kent-based squad into a third successive season following campaigns in the Volkswagen Racing Cup and then the BTCC. The Hemel Hempstead racer is now set to return to VW machinery in one Team HARD’s newly acquired CCs, which the outfit will run in Britain’s premier motor sport series.

Epps impressed in his rookie BTCC season, scoring no fewer than seven outright points finishes and taking runner-up spoils in the Jack Sears Trophy.

Team boss Tony Gilham has already confirmed that his fleet of VWs will upgraded to running RML specification parts and the new TOCA engine, with Epps now setting his sights on points and podium finishes in his second campaign.

Alongside his racing, Epps will also be providing some exciting opportunities for Team HARD sponsors and fans throughout 2017, with plans in place to run track experiences in both the touring car and VW Cup racers, as well as simulator events at Simply Race in Milton Keynes.

The 24-year-old’s return to the pinnacle of UK motorsport comes thanks to the support of Anytime Fitness and Simply Race, and other backers that are to be announced in the near future.

“You know, I was a little concerned about being a one season wonder in the BTCC, especially being such a tough season, but I’m glad I was able to make an impression and create a 2017 campaign out of it," said Epps.

“Tony (Gilham) has essentially opened the door for me to race in a championship I once never really considered as a possibility. Now we are set for year number two and I think we have a good chance to make a real impact.

“As anyone would expect, with a small budget and as part of one of the younger teams on the grid in my rookie season, there have been many challenges and I’m expecting there to be plenty more ahead too. The ingredients are there though; with the new cars and more people on-board I think we should be properly in the mix this time. We definitely outdid our equipment this year.”

“The deal is the right one for us at the end of the day. The team are passionate, they’re loud, and they want success. I have a great relationship with them and I think we’ve got what it takes, this will be the first time I’ve done a second season in any championship too.”

Tony Gilham (Team HARD principal) said: “We are very proud to have been able to put a package together to retain Mike for 2017. It is important for us to try to keep as much consistency with the team as possible and we have a great foundation on which to build on. He had a great season and we believe that next year will be very interesting to see how far up the grid Mike can get. His pace was outstanding last year and got nowhere near enough credit for his consistent front running lap times each weekend.”
